“Breathtaking location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

Not gonna lie...this place was hard to find but at least if you get lost you are surrounded by amazing views! If you think you are lost just keep driving & you will shortly see a sign to turn right. Our GPS told us we had arrived our destination when we were staring a mountain & a couple sheep! Unfortunately the lodge was behind that mountain and our GPS woman was unaware of that! Luckily we gave the resort a quick call and Aileen assured us we were almost there. She was right! We pulled in and walked straight into a beautiful hard wood floored lodge w/ a fireplace burning and warm welcomed greeting from Aileen. The resort offers many activities so it's suitable for everyone..from couples who want to escape to large families with lots of kids. It was like a maze to our room but once there we were pleased with the space and the view from the balcony. The hotel offers two eating areas..the main restaurant and the bar. We opted for the bar area. It's dimly lit and very romantic actually for a couple but good amount of space for a family with an infant who don't want to try their luck at getting through dinner without interruptions. When it was time for our departure Brian the manager made sure we knew where we were headed and gave us plenty of helpful advice on things to do along our journey.

Delphi is in the middle of nowhere (set right out in the wild west of Mayo). That is it's charm, but it is a long journey from where evr you are coming from. However, no matter which way you approach it, the last parts of the journey there are jaw droppingly beautiful. If you have not been to this part of Mayo before..my advice ..GO. The location of the hotel is astounding and it is literally surrounded by the Sheefry Mountains on one side and Mweelrea on another. It is really close to Killary Harbour (a fjord), and is a the entrance to Doo Lough a stunning glaciated valley with a beautiful ribbon lake. The exterior of the hotel is "stoney" and it seems to grow out of the ground..Its not entirely to my taste aesthetically but it sort of works. Inside i do find it much more pleasing to my tastes. It is very charming and the public areas are really quite nice cozy, and inviting and all the public areas have stunning views. But a word of warning: To compliment the feeling of isolation there is no TV in the hotel, and mobile coverage is super bad, though there is wifi in the public areas. This is not the place for people who have a fit if they have less than 2 bars on their mobile..it is much more of a "hermitage".

It has in my opinion three strong groups that it appeals to. 1. Those that want adventure as it provides a lot of activities both land and water based within close proximity to the hotel (and if they do not offer them the nearby Killary Adventure Centre will... but book in advance). 2. Those that want isolation: either sitting and reading and being contemplative. 3. Those that want a spa orientated break as there is a very fine spa in the hotel again with beautiful views. I went there with my teenage daughter and niece for action and peace.

I guess you could say i had a combination of options 1 and 2 above...Crazy adventure activity and zen like silence. I have to compliment Andy and George who looked after us when we went surfing, and climbing/ziplining and high ropes. Great instructors who have a great sense of fun and professionalism (as good as the best i have ever had). Indeed i found all the staff in the hotel really pleasant and again Kelly and Catriona who took bookings and worked the front desk were great as indeed were all the waiting staff and Tomas ( i think that is correct!) the bar man who provided faultless recommendations on food and drink and superior advice on the up coming Sam McCarthy cup (Up Mayo and i hope you enjoy the game...and that's from a Dubliner)..well done to all.

I read some criticisms about the rooms in previous opinions on tripadvisor..i have to say that i cannot concur..i had a double room suite and it was excellent..I travel a lot and have been to very many hotels, and this room was of a vey good standard..the bathrooms are a little bit dinky (small) but they have everything, and it was scrupulously clean. I also found food weather in the bar or the restaurant was really pretty good...not michelin standard but unpretentious, imaginative, well cooked, very tasty and good value.

Last thing the weather..Well it is Mayo. On Day 1 we went surfing on a ridiculously sunny glorious day on the magnificent Cross Beach..surfing heaven ( i've been here in hurricane conditions too and it was awesomely savage). There followed a beautiful calm balmy autumnal evening. At the start of Day 2. it commenced with a "Grey Out" and a blizzard of drenching rain and mist, and streams burst of the sides of the mountain where there were none before like so many white ragged ribbons hanging on the mountain sides. An hour later the drama was over and the day became fretful, filled blustery scudding clouds and and even prolonged outbursts of sun, and by evening it was sunny again. What can i say..Mayo weather..crazy man!

Would i recommend Delphi Mountain Resort?.."Would i ever"..Top Marks

Dear Gringottsgoblin

Thank you for your wonderful review. Delighted to hear that the 3 of you had such a positive experience and you certainly seemed to capture the essence of what we are about here at Delphi and what we strive to continue to improve on into the future.

Sincerely

We stayed in Delphi for two nights in early September. It's changed a lot since the first timeI was there as a 16yr old school kid staying in the dorms! This time we had a lovely double room with a great deck overlooking the hills. View was fab. Room was great, has an iPod dock, comfy bed, bath, tea making facilities - no telly which we liked but might not suit everyone. We had our own plans for some hikes we wanted to do in the area so we didn't take part in any of the on site organised activities but we went for a run around the estate (trails could do with more sign posts so you don't end up in the bus car park!) and saw the zip wire and stuff which looked like fun.
We ate in the restaurant on our first night, couldn't fault it. Food was delicious, great selection of craft beers and friendly staff. Second night we ate in the bar which was also good.
The place looks gorgeous - loads of wood, comfy chairs, books everywhere - so cosy.
Went to the spa to use the jacuzzi, sauna etc the morning we were leaving. It's lovely, only downside is you have to book so you can't just pop in when you come in after a long day to unwind (so get organised and pre-book).
All in all, we really enjoyed our stay.

My Husband, children (two boys 10 & 11) & and I, had a 5 day break at this hotel as part of our summer holidays. We could only say it was totally exceptional. The accommodation was beautiful - spacious and luxurious, the food was top class, the Activities were absolute fun and the location and scenery have to be the most beautiful in the world . My kids& Husband are quite sporty while I am anything but. Our package included 2 dinners and 3 activities. I ventured on the first activity and realised they cater for all types and then went on to do the other two - River Scrambling and Kayaking were the best - also we availed of their free bicycles to go on a small cycle (I hadn't been on a bike for 20 years so you can imagine!). We ended up eating there 4 nights and the service was second to none. It took a little time to get used to the break from TV/Internet, and i read a book which I never do - About Michelle Smith - very interesting & I have a lot of regard for her - I wouldn't object to having a TV next year when we arrive!

Room Tip: it is such a beautiful place - any room would have a brilliant view - we chose a suite - which gave...

Delphi is a truly wonderful experience. Yes it is in the middle of nowhere, it has not one tv anywhere in the hotel and there is no phone coverage but why would you want any of these things on a break away. I came back completely relaxed and rejuvenated. The scenery is amazing and the hotel itself cannot be faulted. Beautiful rooms, great food and some fantastic staff. I'd highly recommend a break at delphi.

Travelled to Delphi with group of about 30 classmates
brilliant things to do, equipment, trained staff, the complex is clean and warm, good modern rooms, food is adverage, beds were not too comfortable and made noise and no phone signal!
overall a very good experience
i would recommend it for a group of friends going rather than a family with small kids/a couple as it is all activity based
