“Bucolic decadence”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

Delphi Lodge is arguably the top Victorian-era fishing lodge in Ireland, a status affirmed when you notice plump salmon splashing to the surface of the lake out front at sundown each day to start snagging insects. Curiously, not one guest during our recent four-day stay showed an interest in picking up a rod and reel. At 160 euro per person per night, Room 2 was a splurge but well worth it when you consider the unique nature of the property, the wonderful staff and the relative lack of high-end accommodations in this remote part of Ireland. Days can be spent driving around the impressive glacial Delphi Valley or visiting nearby Clifden, Westport, Connemara National Park and Kylemore Abbey. There are easy and challenging hikes and an assortment of pubs within striking distance. You can also just relax on the grounds with a drink and a book in front of a drawing room fire and enjoy the French cuisine and solid wine list. (Note: Wi-fi is spotty and there's only one television and one computer available for guests on the premises. If these things are essential, find a hotel instead.)

Delphi Lodge was the first stop in a two-week vacation, and at three days we found our stay too short. Let me share with you that we own a B&B in Savannah Georgia and may perhaps be a bit more critical than some. If I had to find something to complain about it would be that we didn't catch any fish! My husband and I did avail ourselves of day-long fly fishing lesson with Peter as our ghilley, first on a stream and then on the lake - and it was sublimely relaxing, blissfully peaceful, and indeed does require some skill - but so what.

Breakfast was delightful, lunch filling, but dinner was the highlight of the day. Our first evening was roast rack of local lamb with redcurrant and rosemary and the second night was baked fresh cod with a hazlenut and herb crust. Accomaniments were plentiful and dessert was to die for. Oh - the chef will make a wine recommendation for a perfect pairing with dinner - and the prices are very reasonable. Follow that up with coffee and home-made chocolates in the Piano Room and the evening was complete.

If I could pick only one place in Ireland to visit again and again it would be Delphi Lodge, no questions asked. Michael and Anne and the entire staff are gifted in their sense of hospitality. You will want for nothing and be given everything.

I stayed in room 4 which is beautiful very large room with a canopy bed and great view of the lake. All aspects of this great lodge are wonderful but what puts it over the top for me are the staff, they are sincere friendly and warm hearted. I can't wait to go back!

This is a country house, not a 'hotel'. Although it specialises in angling, we did not partake, and still had a lovely time. The drives both south and north are spectacular and there are lovely places to eat on one's day out. Delphi itself is idyllic, and although one has to eat at a large dining table, this proves no hardship and the food is mostly excellent. As are the breakfasts. The wine list is competitively priced and extensive, and the whole evening experience is convivial. The rooms are comfortable. Because this is NOT an hotel there is no television nor coffee/tea making facilities in the rooms. This proved an added attraction, although a drawback for the inveterate early riser/tea immediately available guest.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front have the spectacular views.

We were recommended Delphi Lodge by 2 different local sources so we figured it must be worthwhile. We also wanted to give fly fishing a shot so where better than Delphi. David the fishing manager lined us up with a 'gilly' called John & off we set for the day on his boat - what fun despite the lack of fish! Blame the good weather rather than the fisher persons! Too calm! Dined in both nights with lovely home style dinner & chatted with the other guests in a very warm & welcoming environment. Thanks Mike & to all your team at Delphi.

My husband and I spent 4 wonderful days and nights at the Delphi Lodge. We had dreamed of staying here and fishing the river and surrounding lakes for almost 6 years and finally had the opportunity to do so. The Delphi Lodge is quite unique as it is a Country House accommodation rather than a hotel. It is as if you are staying with family. The staff is beyond accommodating and the food, from the full Irish breakfast to the haute cuisine dinners, is divine. Throw in serene surroundings and the spiritual experience of the fishing to truly make this an unforgettable experience. We plan to return as often as possible. Thank you Delphi staff for helping us realize our dream.

Delphi Lodge is really a wonderful place! The house is in excellent condition and the staff are warm and friendly - many thanks to Michael and his wonderful team.
I enjoyed every minute, stayed 5 nights in March 2012. The dining experience is one of a kind - the food is excellent - thanks to Delphi Head Chef Pascal Marinot!
The location is absolutely unique and one of the most beautiful places in Ireland.
I will be back!
