“Excellant restaurant with really helpful owner and staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013 via mobile

Owner very helpful - even offered to take a look at my broken car.
The Killary bay mussels were fantastic - really good - worth driving there for those alone, but all the food was very very good.
Rooms had fantastic views - must be one of the most premium located rooms - view wise - in the area. Maybe a tv or radio in room wouldn't have gone a miss but that's not why most people visit here.
Would definately go back - especially to the restaurant.

Beautiful views from almost every window. Very welcoming hosts and friendly staff. Rooms basic, but clean and well kept. Centrally located to explore Connemara. We went on a Group, offer, which was exceptional value and included B&B, evening meal, which was top class (the prawns were to die for) and a boat trip on Killary fiord. Very peaceful and a bonus was no TV, which I thought we would miss, but actually encouraged us to speak to other guests. Although there is free wifi (in lounge) if you are desperate for contact with the real world. Would definitely recommend as long as you aren't looking for the 5 star hotel experience, though it makes up for it in other ways (food, views, friendliness and good old Irish hospitality.

spent two nights here, amazing view of the ford from the rooms at the front of the building. two really friendly and helpful hosts who were only too willing to help and pass a couple of minutes with chit chat. dinner and breakfast were lovely and the recommended wine was really nice too. looking forward to staying here again.

Room Tip: the rooms at the front of the building have amazing views of the fjord

Most enjoyable stay weekend commencing 17th May. The host was most welcoming and recommended the boat trip on Killary fjord on the Friday night as there was a live band playing on board. They were fantastic! Our room was spacious and clean with a superb view over the fjord. We dined in the restaurant on the Saturday night and can say we found the food to be excellent and portions were generous - easily on par if not better than some good, well-known restaurants in Dublin. All the staff were very attentive and helpful and would have no hesitation recommending this guesthouse. It's a real gem of a place!

Its got it all, stunning views from the restaurant, chill-out room and bedrooms, great food, friendly staff, nice bedrooms and close to the local village for craic in the pub. You couldn't ask for more. I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the main building facing the fjord.

Of the 10 B&Bs we stayed at during our visit this was probably our least favorite.

While the rooms were spacious and clean, the host seemed annoyed whenever we encountered him. He was not very welcoming. The breakfast was okay, but pretty greasy.

On the other hand, the location was great. We walked to a local hotel pub for Lunch and Dinner. (While the Portfinn has a restaurant, it is overpriced in my opinion) The mountains and the inlet are beautiful.

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review for Portfinn Lodge. We appreciate all feedback good and bad. I am sorry that you felt the welcome you got was unsatisfactory as we pride ourselves on giving a good Irish welcome to all our guests and on this occasion we did not and I apologise for this.

I am glad you found the rooms spacious and comfortable. Our Restaurant is keenly priced and is on a par and even lower in some cases in price than the other restaurants locally. We pride ourselves on the fresh Seafood and locally sourced ingredients we serve in the Fjord Restaurant.

If you would like to discuss any of the issues, I would be happy to talk with you in person.

Regards
Alex Goor

Very pleasant stay, great staff. Excellent location. Nice and cosy which is needed in Connemara. Would highly recommend. The boat trip in killary is a must as is walking around the area. The food in the restaurant was very tasty and Chris along with all the staff were very helpful.

Room Tip: Room 4 has a separate door outside which was great.
