“Great Place to Recover From Jetlag”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2007

We stayed at Bunratty Castle Hotel for one night after arriving from our overseas flight into Shannon. The front desk welcomed us with warm smiles and gave us a lovely room with a huge bathroom. The walk in shower was lovely and used immediately when we arrived. We had lots of towels, but only one soap, but that was the only negative.

Another positive, was the free Internet service. As soon as I was out of the shower (which had strong water pressure) I jumped on to the Internet and let my family know that we had arrived.

The best part of the hotel is downstairs - a wonderful Thai spa and an lovely indoor pool. The pool had jets, a seating area and a lovely water fall - just what we needed after a long flight. We also made an appointment for a message. It was invigorating, yet soothing. The tea they poored in the quiet room was splendid and tasted of honey.

We had a wonderful night sleep on a huge king size bed that was extremely firm. We kept the window open due to the crisp air on the evening of our visit - but, our room also had an air conditioner.

We has dinner in the bar area and was served by a lovely gentleman named Pough or Paddy - he has a warm smile and pours a good size glass of wine.

The breakfast was nice and the women work hard to keep everything replenished.

All-in-all, it was an amazing place to get over jet lag -

I stayed for a couple of nights and one was on a Saturday night. Apparently they host many weddings there because during my stay I saw two. The rooms are relatively comfortable. I had a view of the parking lot out front, but there is a graveyard in the rear of the hotel...still dont know what that is about. There are a couple of interesting shops within a short walk. The castle itself can be seen from the hotel grounds. Other than a couple of shops and a pub/restaurant there is not much else nearby. I wouldn't advise staying there more than two nights. However, there is a very nice spa and indoor pool and fitness area in the hotel. Check the prices before you commit to any of the spa services.

Don't expect all the amenities of a nicer hotel in the USA. The ice "bucket" was actually a small styrofoam "container". The television channels were horrible. Bad programing, very limited channels, about seven to nine as I remember. Don't count on staying up to date with current events by watching their TV, and I was in an Executive room.

Apparent some people from one of the wedding partys decided to over indulge at a pub and continue to celebrate in the hallway. Security was called, but the noise continued.

Basically a nice hotel, but don't expect the Embassy Suites or similar.

Great Hotel stayed one night on this trip and stayed in 2000 also. We were on a tour and got a good room, not the best for sure. A bit dated but it was nice and clean and the bathroom was totally remodeled. This would be an excellent reivew but for the dated room.
Got good service at breakfast. They took the whole tour and put us in a separate banquet room which was nice. Typical Irish breakfast. And the day we checked in I was very very thirsty and went to the dining room and asked for a Coca Cola, they hostess was very very nice and got a waitress to get me a cold bottle and a glass with ice. I was very happy with her service and very pleasant manner. Would stay there again on any trip I make to Ireland

  • Liked — The location and the service
  • Disliked — the room was a bit dated and dull

I was only staying one night here and arrived on a Friday, which happened to be one of the busy wedding weekends for the hotel. There was a reception being held as we checked in. Hotel staff were friendly and very efficient.
We stayed in the Executive corridor in a very humble suite. The room didn't have a safe or bath slippers, the former which was very inconvenient.

There isn't much to do around the hotel, aside from a small tourist shopping center and Bunratty castle. A couple of restaurants nearby including Gallaghers, which had good seafood. For those who are on extended stays, dining could be a bit of a problem as the room service menu is quite limited especially after normal dining hours.

The hotel is cute and cosy- not luxurious, and quite far from anything happening. We had breakfast in the library, where I had the best croissant.

Check out time is 11:30- and if you are arriving during a weekend in wedding season, forget asking about late check outs.

We really liked the hotel—one of the best rooms we stayed in during our stay in Ireland. The rooms are large (big bedroom, separate sizeable living area, and large bathroom with a separate tub and shower [not sure that this is true for all the rooms in the hotel. We were booked on the Executive Level). The room was also the only one we had during our stay that actually had air conditioning (and during our visit to Ireland, it was fairly warm, and remember that almost every housing structure in Ireland is designed for heating rather than cooling. So, if you like sleeping in a cool room, you’ll love this place).

While we really liked the hotel, we were a little less enamored with Bunratty, which is not really an Irish town so such as a string of tourist hotels surrounding a Castle. If you do decide to stay in Bunratty, here are a few tips. First, there are far more tourists in town than there are places to eat. So, if you plan on having dinner at one of the restaurants in town, be sure to make reservations well in advance. We had dinner at the Creamery’s restaurant, and thought that the food was quite good. Also, Bunratty is a town that gets pretty quiet pretty early in the evening. Because we got in late, my wife and I ended up strolling around the town around 9:15pm in search of some dinner, and you would have thought that we were walking around a ghost town. Just about the only place serving up food that time of night was “Durty Nelly’s”—we thought about eating there until we realized that in fact Nelly’s is quite Durty, and that the whole pub is populated by tourists looking for an authentic pub experience in the most inauthentic of all places.

We went to the Castle and folk park, and felt that they were well worth the trip. We also drove up to Dromoland Castle and had lunch and walked the grounds. That also makes for a nice outing.

  • Liked — The Room was Large and Very Comfortable
  • Disliked — Did not like the town of Bunratty all that much

I booked a banquete in Bunratty Castle for July 20th for 60 friends as it was my 40th Birthday.
Some people stayed in the two mile inn hotel and got a taxi bus into us for 4 euro each but two people booked a taxi and they were charged 24 euro.
More people stayed in the Shannon Shamrock Hotel.
More guests including myself my husband and 6 year old stayed in the Bunratty Castle Hotel.
The room was nice but after booking a few months in advance we had to wait for a bed for our daughter. We had a two night package booked and had a dinner booked for sat night for 20 people for eight o clock. The service was very slow, We left at 10.30 without tea or coffee, and the meal was nothing to write home about. Breakfast was buffet style food was ok but scarse, most of the dishes were empty and not refilled no bacon or egg, Also service by waiting staff was poor as i had to ask three times for a pot of tea and toast.
The banquette on Friday night was fantastic. the music and the singers were great. The food was lovely also would recommend everyone go at least once. They looked after the cake for me also.
We then went to the Shannon Shamrock hotel for drinks and had a brilliant night of song and dance some provided by some of my party guests.

Really nice hotel with a great pool including hot tub, whirlpool and sauna. This hotel is in a great location and it has a very comfortable room with lots of pillows and large bed. Stickey shower courtain instead of propper shower doors though.

The lobby area is large with lots of seating and complementary coffee available during parts of the day. The bar is adequate, but not for large groups. Good breakfast with lots of everything. Free wifi in most areas and network internet cable in rooms. Lots of parking and a couple of minutes nice walk to the castle.

My only gripe is that we ( group of 20) booked a meal for 8pm in the restaurant. We were all seated for our 4 course meal (starter, main course, desert and coffee) at 8.10pm. I left there at 10.30 without the coffee and tea having been served to any of our group. There seemed to be way too few staff on to cater for the 40 or so people in that restaurant. So if you are in a hurry there are other places to eat locally. Nothing special about the meal either. Nothing wrong with it, but certainly nobody had gone the extra mile with it.

My conclusion: I would certainly stay there again, but would also give serious consideration to the Shannon Shamrock nearby. Especially if you have a large group and would like a good night in a large bar after your meal or day touring.

  • Liked — Lots of space in lobby and rooms. Pool. Free internet access. Good breakfast.
  • Disliked — SLOW restaurant service and horrible shower curtains. No umbrellas for a quick run to your car.
