“Glebe House and Gallery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

Well, what can I say. Lovely setting for this art and countryside 'mix' treasure. What I liked in particular was that Glebe Gallery actually displays local artists work as well, which is so great. It's lovely for a trip any time that you are passing by, drop in for a stroll. Mr Hill certainly knew it was a treasure, and now the public have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. Not to be missed on a visit to our lovely County Donegal, and not to be missed by the locals either. And Tearooms not to be missed!

“ENCHANTMENT, CHARM AND MORE....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

DEREK HILL'S gift to Ireland could not be more special, as the home he lived in, the studios where he painted, all is lovingly preserved--what a treasure, and an unexpected find. While the countryside is littered with horrid debris from the Celtic Tiger excesses, this compact architectural jewel is tucked away alongside the water, surrounded by gorgeous plantings....
plus the tour reveals a home that was host to artists, writers, actors, all kinds of amazing characters---but Hill's decorative flair, collecting and talent all combine in this incredibly beautiful setting....

Charming tea rooms, gorgeous galleries, and lovely surroundings---it was an incredibly charming and illuminating tour site. The gallery explains Hill's career and contribution to Irish art. His portrait painting, for which he was best known, was only one aspect of his fascinating career. His home was such a vivid and dramatic statement about a life, about a true artist.

“Tranquil house in Garton”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

Delightful setting and grounds.
Gallery full of fascinating pictures and, currently, letters.
House, as always, a delight. Totally comfortable, a place one could imaging moving into immediately and living there happily - particularly with al those pictures on the walls.

Love the Recketts Blue Hall - now I know the recipe I can do it at home.

Really nice little tea rooms, too.

“Unexpected delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

We pulled up mid-morning under a thunderous sky. Straight to the cafe for recussitation - simple fare but tasty (Coffee, tea & herb-laden sausage rolls). Great crack with the staff. Booked our tickets in the gallery for our personal tour of Derek Hill's house. What an eclectic mixture - made no sense other than as the fruits of a life collecting. Favourites were Hill's own work and the six views of Mt. Fuji by Hokusai. And a lovely guide. The Gallery was worth the visit also. Didn't walk the grounds as rain was threatening, and duly fell as we drove away.

“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

This could easily be missed as it is really off the main tourist routes, but please don't, particularly if you are a fan of the arts. The Glebe House is the former home of Derrick Hill, a renowned English portrait and landscape painter, who loved an lived in Ireland most of his life. The house is just as Mr. Hill left it when he signed it over to the people of Ireland. Many of the rooms are decorated with William Morris designed fabric and wallpaper. The artwork throughout the house is magnificent and very eclectic. The house sets in a beautiful park like setting near the shore of a small lake. In the old farm building there is an exhibition of art that should not be missed. Take the time and make the effort to find the Glebe House and Gallery. You will be very pleased you did.
