“A jewel in the midst”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

We have dined in Becketts serval times and stay whenever we get a chance. Its a really lovely spot to have a nice dinner with friends and the food is quite amazing. We shop in Dublin for the day and maybe catch a movie in The Lighthouse Theatre in Smithfield and then we drive out to Becketts where the welcome has always been warm and inviting. I find if you are staying overnight then it is only for the upwardly mobile as there are a number of stairs to climb. Our room too was a little cold when we got there but we pointed it out to management they straight away sent up a maintenance person and gave us a drink on the house whilst it was being fixed. When the heating could not be sorted they moved us to a suite, so that made our night vey special, the suite is bigger than my kitchen and dining room put together and I could have stayed a lot longer!!! The food is really lovely and the staff have just the right amount professionalism to know when the leave you alone and when you need something. I did notice over the years that the staff remain consistent and that is always a good sign. I am usually too full for breakfast from the night before but they will always keep us topped up with really good coffee.

Room Tip: Ask Geraldine for an upgrade!!

We stayed here for one night and were very disappointed. The room we were put in was a tiny single room and was very uncomfortable for two of us. The bed was so small that one of us had to sleep on the floor. The cold tap in the bathroom didn't work, so we couldn't fill the kettle up - although we were given a jug of water from the bar downstairs. The shower head was broken and did not work properly. We could clearly hear drunk people in the bar until after 2am, making it impossible to get to sleep. This establishment is marketed as a 'hotel' but in reality is more like a restaurant with a few rooms upstairs and if this had been made clear on their website we would not have booked here.

Although we were charged for a single room - after a gentleman who we presume was the manager pointed out to the receptionists that there had been a mix up in the internet booking - we felt that the hotel staff (in particular Carole who checked us out and did not apologise for the fact that we were crammed into a single room) were more interested in making a profit than in making their customers feel welcome. We would not stay here again.

We arrived on 6th Sept.after spending all day travelling to find that we had to drag our heavy cases up 36 steps with no offer of anyone carrying the bags up. No Lift. When I eventually got to
room 6 it was cold and uninviting.
Had to encounter stairs again to have a meal in dining room.
Steaks looked very nice but my fish served on a bed of sweet potato was ruined because it was swimming in a vinegarette dressing.Yuck!
There was no cooked breakfast and when we were departing the receptionist couldn;t get rid of us fast enough.Thank goodness we went on to The Mustard Seed,Q.C.s restaurant and The Maldron Hotel for good Irish food and hospitality.

Nice mansion that unfortunately lost bit of its character. Clean. Continetal breakfast OK.
Nice room, quiet location, unfortunately the walls seem to be of cardboard, so you can hear people in the other rooms. We considered having dinner in there, but this was too expensively priced. Same for the hotel itself. Difficult to find.

The photos on the hotel website make it look really lovely. And downstairs in the bar/restaurant area, it is. Sadly, our bedroom was a little tired (and moving the TV showed it wasn't particularly clean either), and the bathrom was really disppointing: cracked tiles, dodgy plumbing and dirty/mouldy grouting. Certainly didn't match our expectations. The staff were friendly though - when we got back very late from a wedding well after the bar had closed, the porter made sure we all have jugs of water to rehydrate us! The continental breakfast was also really disappointing. OK, so no Irish breakfast, but no pastries/croissants/cheese/cold meats at all on offer. Just toast and a poor selection of cereals. Plus, despite the ugly double glazing (what a shame for what must once have been a very grand house) we could still hear traffic noise from the motorway. Certainly won't be recommending this place.

To me the sign of a great hotel is their staff ,and what a group of staff they have in Becketts!!
They went above and beyond to accomodate every person at their hotel, nothing was too much..we attended a wedding here, which we stayed 2 nights, from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, our experience of Becketts was so pleasurable. Our food was superb, rooms fantastic and overall atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable...Hotels nowadays seem to be always rushing and understaffed but here you are greeted warmly and attentively.Well done to the management and staff for making our friends wedding day unforgetable ,you really are wonderful and deserve alot of credit
See you all again in the near future!!!
