We stayed at Rusheen Lodge at the end of a long trip to England and Ireland. Rusheen is such a gem! It's beautifully decorated, and the rooms have postcard-perfect views of fthe surrounding farms and mountains of the Burren. As city dwellers, we enjoyed opening the windows at dawn to hear the cows mooing in the nearby pastures.
My husband, son and I stayed in the spacious Burren Suite, which has a sitting alcove, dressing table, etc.; my mother-in-law stayed across the hall in a king-size bedroom. All of us were more than pleased with the cleanliness of the rooms, the quality of the linens, the nicely appointed bathrooms and the scrumptious breakfasts provided by Karen, the proprietor. In addition to traditional Irish breakfast items, Karen offers a sideboard of fruits, granola, etc., which was idea for our son who isn't much of a breakfast eater. Speaking of Karen, I happened to see her cleaning another room one morning and was surprised to see her vigorously wiping down not only the furniture but also the floor boards, doors, etc. She said that she and the staff clean to this extent every day, which explains the immaculate condition of the place.
Karen suggested some good places to see and dine. We enjoyed a very nice dinner one evening at Logues Lodge in the village, which has an eclectic menu. (I highly recommend the goat's cheese/raspbery coulis appetizer.) We also did quite a bit of hiking in the Burren and Cliffs of Moher area. Rusheen is ideally situated for seeing all of these sights. FYI: For a great photo op of the Ballyvaughan countryside, go to the nearby art college, which can be seen from Rusheen, and climb the stairs of the castle-like tower.
All of the Rusheen staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. We definitely will be back to Rusheen Lodge but will spend more than three nights there!
(One side note: We got a flat tire one evening on our way back to Rusheen after a full day of sightseeing --- on a dark, winding road! -- and managed wtih a famer's help to get it changed. Our rental car was missing some of the necessary tools for us to handle this ourselves. Anyway, when Karen heard about our tire mishap the next day, she called "Tom" of Tom's Tire and asked him to help us since we didn't want to continue touring without having a decent spare. Tom was a great guy and fixed our flat tire for free, although we tried to pay him ... He also gave us some great sightseeing tips. Rather than being a negative, our flat tire has has become one of our favorite stories of the trip.)
