“a great stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for one night in February. The person who checked us in,Labhaoise (Lisha), was warm and friendly. She gave us a room in the old part of the castle, which was quite large and charming. It had a modern bathroom with a heated towel rack and rainfall shower head. The water pressure was excellent, and that is rarely the case in Ireland! There were also robes and slippers provided - a nice touch! Our deal included dinner that night at the hotel. It was a pretty good meal - good service and ambiance. Breakfast the next morning was a buffet, and that too was fine.

We also rented a holiday apartment for a week that was located adjacent to the hotel. We were able to avail of the hotel amenities which was fabulous. I will warn families with children that the family swimming hours at the hotel pool are fairly limited.

I would go over to the hotel for coffee in the morning and had a great time people watching. The hotel is very popular for the locals to come to for morning and/or afternoon tea, and of course there are people staying at the hotel from all over the world. I was always greeted in a friendly manner, and was never rushed at all. As a matter of fact, sometimes you had to flag someone down to get your bill.

The only negative during our stay was when we went to dinner at The Grill on the last night of our stay. We took my in-laws out to dinner and thought it would be good because of our previous experience on our first night. Well, the food was...uhm....not good. I had one of the specials which was a bacon wrapped stuffed chicken breast. It came covered in a brown salty mushroom sauce which was not appropriate in my opinion for chicken (way to heavy), the chicken was dry, and basically tasted like a re-heat from a wedding the night (or two) before. Others in our party got the burgers which were okay. Unfortunately, nobody was raving about the meal when we were done, and it is not an inexpensive place to dine. Oh well, maybe it is a hit-or-miss type of restaurant.

I will honestly say overall I was more than pleased with our stay. Customer service is very important to me, and this hotel knows how to do that right. We will definitely stay there again on our next trip back to Ireland.

Dear Kellycsalemma,

Thank you very much for your very nice review on Tripadvisor. We were delighted to read overall that you enjoyed your stay. Luighsighe on the front desk is indeed great and we will pass on your feedback.
I was sorry to read your dinner in the grill was a little disappointing and I will discuss this with our Restaurant Manager here to ensure this does not occur again.
Please let us know if you are returning and we will be pleaded to upgrade your room.

Thank you once again.

Kind Regards,
Nicky Logue

From the moment of checking in the first impression was set , no better first impression could it have been. The initial contact with the receptionest was as though i was a VIP I was not known from Adam but she was fantastic. The rooms excellent overall ambience great and all the staff from start to finish could not have done enough.I was part of a charity conference there for the weekend and the food was also very good .I thought it very ironic horseradish sauce being servede with the roast beef sandwich lol ,but hey if youve got it flaunt it and they had it !
The two night stay could not have been better,an example of hospitality, customer care and fine cuisne , well done to all concerned.

Stayed as part of a castle tour, this was our last stop before heading home. The woman at the front desk was very accommodating when I told her I would like a quiet section of the hotel (we stayed at Dromoland Castle the previous two nights and did not get any sleep due to rowdy guests and obnoxious parents allowing their children to run yelling down the hallway beginning at 6 am). She booked our room in the old section of the hotel, top floor. There were no elevators, but we had no problem getting our luggage up the flights of stairs. The room was amazing, and more what we had expected- older, original and very cool. It was very quiet and relaxing, the bed was superb. Breakfast in the morning was quite a spread. There was an indoor pool and workout room, which were great. Ate lunch at the library bar, food was good. All in all, a relaxing stay with the best sleep I had in 4 nights. Staff were professional and friendly. I would stay here again.

Booked a one night stay here, after checking reviews.
First Reception.
We were checked in by a very nice chap,we got free upgrade, room was not ready so we went into piano bar and had afternoon tea, which was lovely, aswe were enjoying this, the gent from reception came with our keys and informed usour room was ready and our cases had been brought to room.
The room had a balcony with table and chairs, also a lovely view, room was a little dated, but clean and comfortable.
We used leisure facilities, pool sauna steam room and jacuzzi,it was family time and busy, but very enjoyable.
We had dinner in dungeon grill, very busy here also, actually hotel was busy all round.we were seated and menu explained to us,what was on etc, waitress took our order and informed us there would be a wait as they were busy, told her not to worry.prefer to sit in a busy restaurant than an empty one.
All courses were very enjoyable.
Next morning was breakfast in PJS restaurant, what a spread, and lovely restaurant.Breakfast was fabulous, and i had EVERYTHING,
After breakfast we went for a swim ,however due to an upsetting incident there we decided not to swim, this was absolutely nothing to do with the hotel or staff there.
We had a late checkout, but decided to checkout at 11am and come home to be with family.

There was a stray dog in hotel after breakfast and even he was treated well by ALL the staff, hope he found his owner.
This was a great hotel, even though busy, there was lots of places to relax, and every member of staff very friendly, would definitely recommend it

Stayed here on a rugby weekend, though a fair bit out of town. Dalkey is just down the hill and we had a fab time there on the Fri night and Sat morning, returning there late on the Sat night too. Finnegans the family run pub nearest the Dart railway station was the place we spent a considerable amount of time and we couldn't have been mad more welcome.
The hotel was welcoming and staff were great. Breakfast was fantastic. Rooms were adequate as is the rest of the hotel. I wouldnt recommend the hotel other than as an adequate place to stay, 20 mins by Dart from the centre of Dublin in the nicest part of Dublin (Dalkey/Killiney)

We stayed here mid February. Our 7th visit ( speaks volumes ) usually we stay at Halloween. The whole ambience is relaxing, whether you want to chill in the piano lounge or the library bar with a good book or have a drink and a chat. Then there's the swimming pool with separate family and adult only swimming times, which is a real plus. Nearby there's a play park for kids and nice walks for the more energetic. Dalkey village is close by, if you want to experiment with other nice eateries, and the Dart station gives relaxed access to Dublin should you want to venture there.
Staff are attentive, food is fabulous, and if you happen to get the Houth suite, you get a double balcony, duel aspect bedroom with views over Killiney Dublin and the whole bay.
Looking forward to Halloween.
