My husband and I have just returned from a weekend spent at the Royal Hotel in Bray. On first impressions we were very happy both with the hotel itself and also with our 'executive' room which was clean and nicely decorated. We only had breakfast at the hotel and while the restaurant itself looked impressive, the breakfast did not - I was very disappointed to see what looked like the 'leftovers' of a cooked breakfast when we arrived down on the Saturday morning, despite the fact it was early and we found that not only were the fruit juice glasses not very clean but the apple juice was very unappetizingly served at room tempeature instead of being chilled. The one redeeming factor was the very friendly and attentive waiter who served us. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of what appeared to be the head barman or bar manager who attended to us in Quinn's Bar - he was brusque and rude in his manner and while we sat at the bar having our drink we saw at least that he treated everyone with the same discourtesy - particularly the bar staff who appeared to be intimidated by him.
The most upsetting thing however regarding our stay was that the fire alarm went off in the early hours of Sunday morning and we awakened from sleep to find people rushing to get out of the building. As you can imagine, this was very frightening and when we made our way to the ground floor we saw that a lot of people were around the lobby area - I went to reception in search of clarification as to what had happened, only to be met by a very complacent, non-reassuring male who appeared to be in charge (albeit not taking charge) who informed me in a patronising manner that the rooms where the alarm had initiated had been checked and there was no fire. I asked him what had caused the alarm to go off but he didn't appear to either know or care. I felt totally unhappy by his behaviour and was not confident to return to my room. The following morning, the fire alarm again went off at 11.00am - I again went to reception where a female receptionist told me that the alarm had been set off previously by a guest "smoking in a non-smoking area" and they were having a problem with getting the alarm off. She also didn't appear too concerned as to the effect this had had on myself or other guests who were at reception complaining at the same time. All in all, this ruined our weekend away, not so much that it actually happened but more importantly the worryingly matter-of-fact attitute of the staff in their dealing of what could potentially have been a fatal situation.!
