“Old Hotel, Old resort area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

We chose this hotel because it overlooked the Ocean and was very close to powerscourt gardens.

The hotel was located on a waterfront street that was very pictuesque but had some major drawbacks. The building was old with wandering hallways. The room was comfortable and clean but I kept wondering what would happen if there was a fire as we were on the forth floor. The food was OK but not great.

The major drawback for me was the parking. Street parking only. You could only pay for 3 hours in advance and the pay hours were from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm. This meant that I had to get up at 6:30 get dressed and go out and pay the parking (not something I want to do on holidays).

The service at check in was outstanding. We were asking for a place to do our laundry. There was a laundrette not far away but the lady on reception said I can give you an appartment for the night. It had a washer in it and she had housekeeping put a couple of drying racks in it. This solved our laundry problems. The resturant staff were less attentive and even a little abrupt when we questioned the seating for breakfast.

The waterfront was very quiet as the weather was not good but I can definitely see the attraction to this area.

Dear paroganator,

Thank you for your review. It's great to hear that you chose our hotel due to the location. We are situated in a great spot, very close to many natural attractions.

We are indeed located on a public street with only on street parking.

It's great to hear that you were looked after so well by the reception staff who even gave you a room especially to do your laundry in!

Thank you for choosing The Martello Hotel during your stay in Wicklow.

Hopefully we will see you again in the future.

Regards,
Rachel

3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

Stayed at Martello for the June Bank Holiday. Price was relatively high - paid 85E per night for the double room, with breakfast included.
The front desk service was very good and kind - we were given an apartment instead of the room. The apartments are towards the back of the hotel, so they're much quieter. This is good if you're looking for some sleep - because the front side (facing towards the beach) is probably booming from the music in the bar and from the next door club/bar.

The room was ok. Beds were very comfy, things were quite clean, except for the bathroom, which had a bit of a smell and wasn't in pristine condition. It kind of looks like this is the old part of the hotel and they didn't do that much work on it. I presume the seaview rooms are much nicer (judging by the pictures on the website).

The real problem was the breakfast. While it's great that you can have it outside, looking at the beach (assuming the weather is nice, which it was for us), the service and the food were terrible. Worst black-pudding and sausages I've ever had, porridge was like glue and you could break your teeth in the rashers. Also - we had to repeat the order numerous times. They kept bringing parts of it and forgetting others. I think other customers were in the same situation.

Overall - this isn't an ideal hotel for a laid back weekend. On the other hand, if you're there to party it definitely looks like the right venue in Bray.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quiet but they seem older.

Hi moussevic,

Thank you for your review. We price all our rooms very competitively to give our customers the best possible value during their stay.
I’m glad to hear that you found the reception staff to be approachable and looked after you with the allocation of a quieter room!
We will look into and make sure to rectify the issues you have raised here and ensure that this does not happen again.
The Martello is indeed a busy spot most suitable to those who are going to enjoy themselves in the Martello bar and even in Koo nightclub.

Hopefully we will see you back again for another lively weekend in the future.

Regards,
Rachel

My friend and I stayed here for one night, we are both in our mid twenties. We payed €80 for our night's stay which included breakfast which I felt was good value. The only drawback we found was that we arrived at the hotel at 2 o clock and couldnt park near the hotel as the parking outside the hotel is only for 2 hours so we had to park very far away. The hotel pleasantly surprised us, the decor was nice and quite modern. I found the staff to be excellent, very helpful and friendly. We were a little disappointed with breakfast as we had to wait a long time for it, it was quite busy but we seemed to be forgotton about and had to ask various different staff for basics such as sugar and milk. We had dinner outside which was really nice and very good value also the waiting staff were very nice. The location of the hotel is very convienient for the dart and nightclubs but I wouldnt recommend staying here if you want a quiet early night. We stayed in the apartments which we were quite happy with they had a double room with a seperate sitting dinning area and kitchen amd a bathroom. Everything you would need was in the room and it was very clean. Overall happy with our stay and cannot praise the staff highly enough, excellent service.

Stayed for three nights; wish it could have been more !
The location could not be better. Situated on the promenade, overlooking the sea at Bray; close to Dublin by train and close to some wonderful golf resorts; notably Druids Glen, Powers Court and many others.
The greatest asset of this hotel is the staff, most notable are Donal the Food & Beverage manager and Angie at Reception. Both are wonderful ambassadors for the Martello hotel and Irish hospitality. Neither could do too much to please.
Donal is head and shoulders (literallly) above many others in the trade. He is attentive, polite, listens and continully smiles whilst striving to please. He gets the most out of his staff by leading by example and his foregoing attributes do not detract from his professionalism and attention to detail.
Angie is similar; she is welcoming, friendly and efficient. As an example, we had to check-out very early (0600hrs) before breakfast service started. Asked Angie if it could be possible to have the night porter rustle up some bacon sandwiches. No problems: Done!! Every member of staff we came across seemed to have been immersed in a warm & genuine service ethic.
The food was excellent. I recommend the lamb shank, to be eaten whilst sitting on the terrace, accompanied by a very nice glass or three of red wine. You don't need to eat out: expensive and not as good!
The hotel is very busy at all times; there is a night club, various bars and food outlets and we were there during the Bray Jazz Festival which only made the atmosphere more enjoyable. How the staff keep going, when the bars are open to 3 am is beyond me!
The rooms are clean and comfortable and represent very good value. A little noisy from the outside entertainment, but to be expected at this time. I would imagine under normal circumstances very quiet. One thing for sure; I will definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask rception. From what I saw and experienced they would do their best to accomodate you in a room t...

My uncle Joe Douglas and Iris stayed in your hotel this week - they just left on Thursday. While there my uncle celebrated his 80th. Birthday and the hotel provided him with Champagne and his family surprised him with a special meal. He was delighted with his treatment at the hotel and would like to express his thanks to all the staff who helped him enjoy his stay. They have stayed in the Martello on several occasions and hope to be back again later in the summer. Again thanks to everyone at the Martello for making their stay so pleasant and enjoyable.
