It's a truly lovely place in beautiful Cooley peninsula. I have been there for a wedding, great food, very elegant and lovely grounds also. You can get nice food also in the bar area, perfect for lunch for light dinner.

We stayed for the weekend and the hotel is in a lovely setting, a fine estate/golf course, lovely gardens and box hedging gives it a very nice classic look. There is a very good marriage of the old original building and the new, modern extension. It works very well. We stayed in the Dolmen Room (room 210) which is a suite, very nice room. Big bedroom, and walk in closet and bathroom. But the room was cold. This is January in Ireland, 5 degrees outside, and most hotels would be too hot, not cold. I had both (small) radiators on full blast but I could not get the room warm. I had to ask for extra blankets for the bed as it was a sheet setup not a duvet and quite thin. No problem getting the extra blankets and i checked with the staff if the radiator were set to high and they were.
The bathroom was a good size with a bath and shower but again a cold room. I didn't fancy a bath in that cold. The shower was triangular and small.
The closet was good, a big hit with the females as plenty of room for making up. There was a good safe in the closet and ironing board , tea maker etc.
The decor of the main bedroom was very nice and classic. There is a narrow balcony along the width of the room which you can step out on and it overlooks the lawn at the front of the hotel, nice view. But the previous occupant had obviously been smoking out on the balcony, 3 cigarette butts on the floor of the balcony (non-smoking room!), but had not been cleaned up which was a bit sloppy for a 4 star hotel.
The bar is spacious and lively, good bar food, entertainment on Saturday night was a guy singing with a music box and guitar, good fun.
Staff were very attentive and pleasant throughout the hotel.
Food in the restaurant for dinner was good but we both ordered stakes and they got mixed up and we ended up with each other's steak. 4 star service? But a good atmosphere in the restaurant at night.
The breakfast was adequate, actually quite tasty but not well presented. The fruit cocktail was more an apple cocktail. You could ask for special orders (poached eggs - very good).
The interior of the hotel is very pleasand - there are some nice small areas for reading - one with a mock fire nice and cosy.
Overall it is a nice hotel - well located near Dundalk, just off the M1 motorway and close to Carlingford and Newry. it is well worth driving from the hotel to Newry via Carlingford, and on to Warrenpoint and Rostrevor on the North side. Lovely drive. We went to the Kilbroney Forest Park - really beautiful - lots of walking routes for all levels. Drive all the way to the upper car park and you can take one of 3 walking routes.
But the hotel is classed as a 4 star and I have to say it was a 3.5 star trying to be a 4 star. It looks like a 4 star but it lets itself down for the reasons specified above.

Room Tip: Dolmen Room , 210, overlooks the lawn at the front of the hotel

I have been stopping at the hotel now, on and off for over twelve years, my stays are normally one or two nights along with customers, when visiting our manufacturing plant in Dundalk. Over the the years I have seen the hotel and leisure complex grow, the investment in the whole complex has been massive and it puts it up there with the best when it comes to quality of fixtures and fittings but as we all know you can have the best finish in the world but one think makes a hotel great and that is its staff.
Rest assured readers I am yet to find a hotel in mainland Europe that can compete when it comes to customer care and service, nothing is too much trouble and everyone goes that extra mile to ensure that you have everything you need without being overpowering.
What signify's a good hotel to me is when you invite customers to stay from around Europe and they enjoy the experience and the area so much that they come back with there family's and friends to enjoy the experience.

In my personal experience, not a good hotel, A Great Classic Hotel.

After numerous stays here I have never been disappointed. Even called one night to say I wouldn't arrive until after 10pm and the staff were kind enough to keep the kitchen open. I always get a quite room especially if there is a wedding on. Food is excellent and the hotel is spotless.

Room Tip: End of a wing for a quiet sleep

Have just returned from a wonderful one night stay in Ballymascanlon House Hotel. Everything was class! There was a great buzz about the place. The leisure centre is just fabulous. Our room was perfect with gorgeous views. Food in the bar and at breakfast was delicious. Location is just a few km from Carlingford which is a hidden gem. We got a good deal with Pigsback and certainly got excellent value for money and top class service. Can't wait to go back!
