“Nice Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012 via mobile

Stayed in this hotel prior to a business meeting . Staff were very friendly from time we checked in. The bar food was lovely. The rooms were spotless clean & very big.

Pity there is no free wi-fi in the rooms.

The breakfast room was lovely and good choice available.

The room we had for the meeting was part of the old house and was nice and airy.

Would recommend the hotel to anyone. The leisure centre, grounds, golf course looked great, didnt get to use them.

Had a lovely walk to the Dolmen.

I overnighted here while in the area on business and found it to be a very relaxing hotel in really beautiful sorroundings.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was huge and very comfortable with a view of the mountains and golf course, the bed was very good and I cannot fault the value for money.

I ate in the bar which I found to be more comfortable and atmospheric than the restaurant. The steak sandwich was really excellent.

The only downside on food was the cooked breakfast which had a waiting time as if it was cooked to order but it was pretty obvious that the only part that had not been sitting in a warming tray for quite a while were the eggs.

There is a lovely pool and I like the outdoor hot tub. It feels very indulgent to sit in this on a cold and wet October evening.

If you have time make sure you take the beautiful walk across the golf course to the Proleek dolmen and gallery grave. These monuments are 4,000 years old and worth a look see.

I would happily book in here again for both business and pleasure and would love a go on the lovely looking parkland golf course.

Room Tip: Try to make sure you are in the new building as I have heard the rooms in the original house are a b...

We had our wedding, ceremony and reception, in the Ballymascanlon in early September and the day couldn't have been better. Everything was organised brilliantly and the staff were really professional and made sure the day went smoothly but they never made us feel rushed. The venue, the food and our room were all excellent. And all our guests had a wonderful time too.
The management were also excellent in the run up to the wedding, very helpful and knowledgeable.

Stayed in this hotel as we were attending a family party thought €160 per night was expensive but said we would enjoy the hotel facilities and have a weekend treat in a lovely hotel, oh how wrong we're we! first impressions were good the grounds are lovely checked in and thought we would have a drink in the hotel bar. Bar was brightly lit, in need of refurbishment, staff were arguing behind the bar and the was an overwhelming smell of bleach which was surprising as it was not particularly clean. Then we went to the room should have gone to a premier inn that was the standard of decoration, two single beds pushed together and the mattress zipped together, no mini bar. In the morning we went for the full Irish breakfast what a joke at €160 per night the same price as hotels such as the shelbourne in Dublin city centre, we were presented with a buffet which was frankly revolting a small buffet counter with scrambled eggs swimming in water, beans spilt all over fried eggs that were swimming in grease, it was like being in a low budget holiday camp. The restaurant manager asked my husband if he was ok to which my husband replied certainly not saying he was disgusted this was the breakfast being served when the rooms were charged at such a high rate. The manger proceeded very sharply to tell him this was not the time nor place in a busy dining room to complain ignored him and and proceed to again refill the already slopped and dirty serving dishes with more food, needless to say we could not bring ourselves to eat it. If this was a two or three star hotel and rooms were €80 per night then I would not really have expected much more however it professes to be so much more I have stayed in the park in kenmare the shelbourne in Dublin and quite frankly this hotel is the biggest rip off and not in the same league I will never stay there again and make sure no one I know does. The restaurant manager deserves to be sacked after us attitude towards my husband and ashamed of himself serving the most unappetising breakfast I have ever had the displeasure to look at never mind eat.

Room Tip: Don't go to this hotel

Dear Jelvas 1,
I refer to your review of our property and wish to apologize to you for any failure of standards on our behalf. I wish to also point out a number of factual inaccuracies in your review which I note is your first as a reviewer.

1. You were charged a reduced rate of €140.00 B&B which we offer to guests attending weddings and other functions here at the Hotel.
2. We serve Breakfast from 7.30am until 10.30am.
3. You arrived down to the Dining Room at 10.20am.
4. We were serving over 180 guests that morning most of whom sat between 10.00am and 10.30am.
5. It would seem reasonable that the Restaurant Manager would ask you for a moment so that he could attend to the buffet. I am sorry if he was sharp with you.
6. We often look after latecomers in the Bar area with a fully served Breakfast but you did not give the Manager on duty this opportunity
7. Our Reception Staff checked with your husband at checkout if everything was to his satisfaction and he made no mention of your complaint at that time.
8. I was on duty at the desk and would have welcomed the opportunity to discuss any problems with your husband.

One again we are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us and would welcome the chance to respond to you personally. Please do not hesitate to contact me at the Hotel if you are in the area again.

Yours faithfully

Chris Brayden

27 ladies stayed here on a golfing weekend and we all had a fabulous time. The facilities are wonderful and the staff are friendly, professional and so helpful. The rooms are spotless and modern with plenty of space. The beds and the pillows are divine! The food in both the terrace bar and restaurant is first class, the menu is varied with very interesting combinations. Service is excellent and staff are always smiling! The price for the package is extremely good and I will definitely be back and will certainly recommend this hotel. Thank you to all the staff for such an enjoyable stay...I only wish my golf was as good.

Spent a night here for a business meeting and really enjoyed it. Free wifi, ample breakfast, tea and coffee in the room, evening meal was good (lunch was just sandwiches so can't comment too much on that) and they have a number of rooms which are equipped for business meetings. There was a wedding going on at the same time, but it didn't disturb us at all. Would definitely return.

Despite the modern additions, the meandering nature of the hotel and the need for a guide to find your room this is still a wonderful hotel. All of the foregoing, the grounds, friendly staff, comfortable rooms and great food make for a top class experience.
