5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2011

From the moment we arrived til we left we loved every minute of our stay! The scenery was out of this world - sitting on the edge of the lake, the staff were so welcoming and friendly and the food was to die for!

My wife and I celebrated her birthday by spending two nights here recently. We received a warm welcome when we arrived, from the two receptionists on duty. Check in was prompt and efficient (with no swiping of credit card). The hotel had contacted us on our landline, prior to our arrival, to confirm our booking but as we had been travelling we didn’t receive that call: a call to my mobile would have been more effective.
One of the receptionists showed us to our room which was slightly chilly so she turned on the heating, a fan-driven heater, which was loud but effective. A tray of cookies, decorated with a “Happy Birthday” awaited us on a table, along with complementary bottles of water. The view from the bedroom was stunning and it was so relaxing to watch the changing light pattern on the lake as the day passed.
The only distraction was the heating which, even on the lowest setting, was loud, so loud that we couldn’t properly hear the TV. We could have raised the volume but it would have been deafening and disturbing for our neighbours. (The walls are thin: we could hear our neighbours when they used the bathroom.) I presumed that all the rooms were of similar specification so there was no point in requesting a change of room. Many of the guests were celebrating some event, birthday, birth, reunion etc and most of the guests were polite and quiet when passing our room, but we were awoken by a group of female revellers returning to their rooms.
The room was comfortable, clean but not overly large. The bed was extremely comfortable and clean: the bathroom was spotless and my wife appreciated the L’Occitane products. Bathrobes and slippers were also provided.
We enjoyed a few pre-prandial drinks in the bar, prior to enjoying a beautiful meal in the award-winning restaurant. During the day, the bar was not always attended so some people had to wait to be served. However, at night, it was “all hands on deck” with Jane serving too. The bar was cosy, with a warm, enclosed fire blazing and radiating heat. Our table was ready at the reserved time and we were escorted from the bar. We enjoyed beautiful, tasty food and a superb view across the lake. Service was professional and friendly. Norma Wilson, the General Manager made a point of visiting each table to speak to guests.
Glasson is a hidden foodie heaven: we also had excellent meals in Grogan’s and The Fatted Calf. As with the Ice House, a hot tub is available for use. We enjoy walking but we didn’t stray too far from the hotel as we could only walk on a public road.
We enjoyed our stay in The Wineport. We had stayed in the other hotels in the group, The Ice House and Lisloughrey ( no longer part of the group) and were eager to try the Wineport. The staff are superb, friendly, totally professional and eager to make each guest feel special. I thank them for that. The location is special too. Now if that heater wasn’t so loud…..

We first stayed in this hotel in August 2008 for 3 nights and we got an upgrade to an absolutely wonderful room overseeing the lake (all rooms I think are). We were lucky to have relatively good weather so I was a bonus. The restaurant is first class and so accommodating as I was pregnant and could not have half of what was on the menu so they made up dishes for me. The room was absolutely beautiful and so clean. It is off the beaten tracks and therefore very quiet. Athlone itself is not the place I would run to visit again but the hotel is worth going back again and again. We have since been back in October last year and it was just as great and friendly and top class as the first time. We loved it to so much that we got a voucher to go back to it so we might try going around Christmas to get all season's experience!
The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and the food being in the restaurant, the bar or as room service was wonderful.
The only downfall is that the bed was too soft and therefore a bit unconfortable.

We've just returned from a lovely relaxing stay at the Wineport having availed of their Valentine's weekend package. The location is idyllic beside Lough Ree which is a very tranquil relaxing spot; the hotel itself however looks a bit weathered outside after the rough winter but we reckoned we weren't seeing it at its best at this time of year. The access road up to the hotel is also not in great shape. We arrived on Friday night and were shown to our room by the receptionist who was very professional and efficient. The room itself was lovely; a bit minimalist in decor but had many nice touches such as a well stocked tea tray with coffee plunger etc. We slept like logs as the bed was very comfortable and there is no noise to be heard; traffic or otherwise. As mentioned by others, the bathroom had lovely L'Occitane toiletries. However, I noticed there were no handrails in the bathroom; either in the vacinity of the bath or separate shower which might be a useful addition to less able-bodied. The shower was also a cascade type shower head; however there was no other shower head provided for hair rinsing etc. (a personal preference). With regard to the food, breakfast delivered to the room was very tasty. The evening meal in the restaurant was delicious and service was very good even though the restaurant was almost full. Bar staff were helpful and friendly. So all in all, we really enjoyed the stay. The one big caveat is that the prices being charged are not in line with the newly realligned prices of similar quality hotels. The package charge was on the high side of what other hotels were charging for the weekend and charges such as room service menu charges are still very high e.g. c. €15 for a club sandwich. For this reason only we probably wouldn't frequent the Wineport.

My wife and I have have just returned with our 2 year old son from a stay in Wineport Lodge.
The setting of the lodge is specatular right on the lake. The room we received had a beautiful view over the lake, it was a good size and held 2 adults, a large bed, cot and a rampaging 2 year old easily without being cramped. The bathroom was large and extremely well equipped bot a bath and seperate and a huge sink. however it did take the water a little time to heat up.
Due to the bad weather(rained the whole time) , we were only really able to explore the hotel its self rather than the walks and lake area. The bar was lovely, a real fire was blazing however it would been nice if it was open instead of behind a glass stove door. But it was relaxing and did not have a big screen TV to distract your gaze from the view.
The snacks offered in the bar were also on the menu of the restaurant as starters and were very tasty. It was just a lovely, warm place to relax.
The dinner that night was beautiful, from a beautiful mushroom soup amuse bouche right down to the deserts that we had sent to our room.
The staff however were the highpoint of the place. From the moment we walked through the door they were excellent. They new our names without us opening our mouths, they offered to help in and out of the car. We were allowed to bring our son to dinner at 9pm asleep in a buggy, they recommended food, brought deserts to our room as were tired and not sure we could finish meal and yet still had time for a friendly chat. Whoever trained them should be proud.
Overall if you want to go somewhere to get away from it all, eat good food and unwind then there is no better place.

Had heard some raving reviews of the Wineport so decided to go there for a weekend - I just feel a little ripped off - while the hotel itself is lovely, it's in a lovely setting and the bedroom and food were very nice, I just think it is really overpriced

For a birthday treat my husband booked us into Wineport Lodge (and also mentioned the fact that it was my birthday on making the reservation a few weeks before we were scheduled to go there). The moment we walked into the reception area we felt so welcome, being greeted by 2 staff members. Our check in was smooth and swift. We were walked to our room, where we discovered, after reading the note left for us along with a plate of cookies, that we had received an upgrade. Thrilled! There was a sitting room off the bedroom with panoramic views over the lake. Stunning. The bathroom contained L’Occitane products which was really a treat. The room was very minimal in decoration, probably because the view was supposed to do all the talking (which it did).

Dinner was booked for 6.30pm in the restaurant, and we had a few drinks in the bar beforehard. The bar is small but nice. The barman did seem to disappear a lot and leave it unattended but there was never an issue.

Dinner was definitely a highlight. The food was heavenly, and the service was to match. The manager along with other staff enquired were we enjoying our meal, and the food itself was such a high standard.

Breakfast the next morning was the same high standard, with a buffet of the usual fruits, cereals etc and an option of a cooked to order breakfast. You also have the added treat of availing of breakfast in bed for no extra cost!!

The staff and the food really made the experience special for us and we both agreed this was definitely a place we will visit again.
