“Fantastic Family Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2011

Fantastic hotel for families. Kids club was great; bit disorganised at times, but my two (7 & 4) enjoyed it. Food at the hotel is fantastic. Staff are so helpful and friendly. The boat trip from the hotel was really enjoyable. The location is great but you really need good weather. Leisure centre is excellent. Unfortunately, the family bedrooms are in the older part of the hotel; very basic and in need of refurbishment. The extra bed was not great. But overall, a fantastic hotel with superb food.

We wanted to stay at the Hodson Bay hotel and we have finally checked it out. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. By ringing when booking, we got a great deal. We were booked in one of their Retreat Lake view double room. The newest wing of the hotel (with NO kids!!!)

When we arrived, check in was really quick. However, we were a little disappointed with the view from our room. As it was at the back of the hotel, we were looking at what looked like a hangar. We could also see the golf course + lake but I just could not take my eyes off that hangar. The room was beautiful though. The bed: extremely comfortable.
Not happy with that view, I rang reception and a lovely lady (Lynette I believe) rectified our little problem and moved us to a deluxe retreat lakeview room (at the front of the building). So thank you Lynette. The room was beautiful !!!! Huge, a jacuzzi bath: the bathroom was gigantic.

We ate both nights in the restaurant and really enjoyed both the atmosphere and the food. It was really innovative and excellent. The service was excellent. On day 2, we were really looking forward to diner.

Unfortunately, it rained for the whole week end so we did not really leave the hotel but the location is lovely: on the lake.

There was a lot going on in the hotel: a wedding on each day, a hen and a 80th birthday party but as we were in the no kids wing, the quieter wing: we did not notice all that. Also, the birthday and hen were partying in a different restaurant (breakfast room) .

The pool area is great. By going on Friday evening, when all the families were getting ready to have dinner, we managed to have the pool to ourselves! We wanted to experience the spa but it was fully booked.

I really enjoyed the week end. We would definitely consider going back again but it would have to be room 646 or 644! The only thing I could fault is that the hotel charges for use of the therapy rooms. There is another hotel in Cavan (that we adore) that have the same facilities and do not charge.

One more thing, we had forgotten our toothpaste and it turned out we were able to buy some at reception. It is all the little details that make the difference!

I chose to stay here again having been highly satisfied with the facilities the Hodson Bay Hotel had to offer when I visited 2 years ago.
I am delighted to report that this hotel can still boast the same high quality of hospitality, accommodation and service, and should be proud of this reputation!
The location is superb - literally on the shores of Lough Ree, in the "Irish Lake District" yet, surprisingly, only an hour's drive from Dublin ( very handy to note if travelling by ferry, or plane). Athlone town, with its shopping centre comprising several favourite High Street shops, is but a few minutes away. Galway Bay is within easy reach, to the west, as is Sligo to the north west.
We were fortunate in acquiring a lough-view room again, which provided stunning, panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The room was very clean, comfortable and spacious, and the power shower in the bathroom was absolutely
out of this world!
Breakfast was very well organised - excellent service, superb variety of food, plentiful, very well presented and appetising.
All of the staff are very friendly and obliging and nothing is too much trouble.
The hotel has its own leisure complex - swimming pool and spa, and also offered complimentary mid-week activities, eg. wine tasting, aqua aerobics, thermal spa experience, yoga classes etc. as an added bonus! For the less energetic, there are many quiet areas to sit and just unwind - the hotel even has its own library!
All in all a most enjoyable and relaxing break. Well worth the visit!

I stayed for two nights with a golf society and we played in Glasson which is a super golf course with stunning views. The hotel is located right next to Athlone Golf club which we didn't get a chance to play. After the golf the pool provided an excellent recharge of the batteries with power jets to pound your tired muscles. Free wi-fi was provided in the rooms with excellent speed which is most important nowadays.

Arrived down to hotel for 2 nights. Girl that checked us in was so rude. Did not inform us about any activities or facilities the hotel had as asked on the comment card. She made us feel very unwelcome. Got our room and wished to change, spoke to a very nice girl on reception who offered to show us another room. When we arrived back down we got the first girl again and she was just as rude then as the first time around. Key card took about 15 attempts to open the door. Even when we changed the card it was the same. Room was small but clean. Put Do Not Disturb sign on the door for the next morning yet house keeping knocked on the door 3 times, waking us. Queue's for 15 mins for breakfast the next morning. There had been tables available, just no staff to clean them for the next people to use. Had to then queue a further 15 mins for breakfast as there was only one thongs for the food.So it was one by one. So decided to get breakfast in bed the next morning. Ordered it for 10.30 but woke up early and rang down at 9am asking it to be sent up earlier. It was 10.40 before it was brought up so even later than orriganally ordred. When i rang down to ask why it was taking so long, i was told it was because we wanted boiled eggs and "they take longer"!!!
It is in a beautifull location but the sheer lack of any decent customer care completely turned me off this hotel. If they were looking for the best way to ruin the hotel into the ground, they are bang on!

Room Tip: Stay in a hotel in town and travel down to use spa
