“Morning noise!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

A lovely hotel, clean and convenient. Friendly staff and great food. As previous reviewers have mentioned, the shower was AMAZING!! Only downside - From 9.30am the housekeepers made such a racket in the hall that a lie in was impossible. Check out not till 12 but was up and gone by 10.30 because of this. Disappointing.

When checking in she asked would you like a view or a bigger room, opt for the bigger room, it is most excellent and the shower has two heads, his and hers! It in the middle of town, excellent sites near by, great food and the best breakfast we had in 10 nights in Ireland. Give a try you will love it.

Skip the famine museum, its a giant rip off, but check out the Roscommon Castle ruins.

Room Tip: Ask for a bigger room over the view.

I had a twin room which was nicely laid out and on the second floor, overlooking what I imagined was a dilapidated factory building (or a prison - that bleak) and a flat root on a lower level. While I don't necessarily expect a great view I do not like to see dilapidation, especially at that level and I do think the hotel could at least look into painting, cleaning the area up, removing rubbish from the flat roof. Did not eat in the hotel, just had a latte and it wasn't great, not sure if it was the machine or their coffee. Breakfast was ok, but glasses not clean and there were stains inside the milk jug on my table, I don't like grubbiness and these matters should be spotted by staff. On this basis I have to give a mark or average.

Agree with others it is hard to get to even though its in the middle of town! Small streets & traffic had me drive past the first time. Then when I asked directions it was an easy find on the corner of the main street across from the church. It's within walking distance of everything! We were there for 2 nights and didn't use the car for anything Staff is verrry friendly, rooms are nice-sized, rates are reasonable (especially considering the quality), parking is free. Only con: we planned to have laundry done but it was REALLY expensive. Had it done at another hotel later. The showers are SERIOUSLY GRRREAT! You have got to check them out! We would gladly stay there again.

While in Athlone you MUST eat at The Locke in old town by the water. Best food we had in Ireland. 2 small shops close by for breakfast, Beans and Leaves, and Bon Bon (actually a longer name than that but its right down from the hotel, on the corner). Other places/styles are close by as are all kinds of shopping.

The walk to old town is short with nice views. We toured the castle (13th century) & walked around a bit. The oldest bar in Ireland is located there too. Other attractions are within driving distance. Even the drive to Athlone was beautiful.

Room Tip: Can't say it enough, check out the showers!

Stayed here during a weekend conference at a nearby hotel. Found the staff nice and pleasant. The room was clean, spacious and nicely decorated. Really liked the selection of meals on the breakfast menu. A little noisy on the Saturday night as there was a band playing downstairs in the bar but slept soundly once they finished up. Great central location in Athlone town. Close to all amenities with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants nearby. Car park spaces at the back of the hotel were a bit of a squeeze. Would stay again.

We booked the Prince of Wales for the 6th September to celebrate our parents 50th Wedding Anniversary as they had honeymooned here in 1963. There were almost 50 guests in total. The overnight rate with dinner was very good. We were EXTREMELY well looked after. Padraig, the manager and his staff could not do enough for us including providing menus and placemats with our parents wedding photo on them. The food was delicious and the rooms wonderful. Thank you to all the staff for making our night so memorable.
