“Nice example of a tower without the crowds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

This castle is a very nice example of a tower castle that is a little off the beaten path. This allows you to read the information and enjoy it without large crowds. Many of the surrounding structures have not survived time, but it had a low admission price and the main tower was in great shape. Ironically, the number of visitors is so low, my wife and I almost spent the night in the tower. As we were leaving, the staff was locking the outside gate door..effectively locking us in for the night, but we caught them as the door was closing. We definitely would have gotten our admission price out of a "tour". All was in good fun, but goes to show how you can enjoy this piece of history on your own.

“History comes to life”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

This is a great example of a 16 century tower castle. The day we came it was very wet, but this did not spoil our visit. There was lots of detailed information charts in each room. A friendly tour guide called Eileen made it real and come to life with the history of the O'Flahertys. The two grey dogs who looked as if they lived in the castle made us laugh, as they open a lazy eye and watched another group march by. A giant pig sat under a tree in the dry moat and you could feel yourself going back in time to what it must have been like. There is an example of a 16 century toilet in the tower, this must have been mighty cold when the wind was blowing. A fun day out for old and young, in rain or sun. Eileen was the jewel in the crown.

“Eileen at Aughnaure castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

My family took a trip to Aughnaure castle in the summer holidays July 2012 . It was a very wet day but we went to see the castle anyway and found out the fascinating history the trip was made so much more enjoyable by our tour guide Eileen she was so full of enthusiasm and knowledge that our whole experience was amazing because of her . Our pary was of 8 people ranging in age from 75 to 3 years and the whole pary was all kept interested . I would recommend a trip to the castle but make sure you ask for Eileen to show you around. The Dunckley family from England .

Historical, Under Office of Public Works. Restored in authentic manner and not spoiled with modern attachments. Plenty of information on the charts.
