“Visited as part of Heritage Week”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2011

As happened to be in the area decided to end our trip at this attraction.

As part of Heritage Week the entrance fee is free (€8 for a family otherwise). Car parking is provided but as was expected the car parking was packed and limited.

If one doesn't fancy paying the entrance fee there is still a lovely wooded riverside walk from the car park to the entrance gates.

As part of Heritage Week we were meet with the sound of live bag pipes which was wonderful, there was falconry and archery experiences which were excellent too and the facepainters (which Im not sure if free as we dont go for these).

The castle itself can be climbed to the top by tight steps. The Oughterard Flower Arranging Group (or of such name) had amazing displays set in the ground floor and at various window points upwards.

Lovely soft grass inside the castle that would be perfect for picnics.

“Impressive and informative”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2011

Aughnanure Castle is well worth a visit if you are on your way west from Galway. There is a small admission charge.
It is a restored tower house that used to house the "ferocious O'Flahertys". A large portion of the surrounding wall or "bawn" is still standing.
In contrast to the tower houses that are in ruins, which are mostly locked and/or unsafe to enter, it was good to be able to climb the stairs and see how everything about the whole place was designed for defense.
For anyone interested in the medieval history of Ireland and old castles, I would certainly recommend a visit.

“Well Preserved”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2010

After a visit to see a friend in the Connemara Gateway Hotel. Myself and my parents went to see Aughnanure castle. It's a tower house with three floors. There was some function on that day were Eamon O'Cuiv was a guest speaker at it.
It's a very well preserved castle. I would advise tourists to look around the bawn of the castle which was my favourite bit of the self - tour. It was free in that day which was great and you are seeing a lot more in there than you think.

“Wonderful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2009

I loved this castle - it is very well preserved and is situated beautifully. I went to a million castles and homes in Ireland, and for some reason, this was my absolute favorite.

“Peaceful and Charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2009

I visited Aughnanure Castle during my recent trip to Ireland. We found the castle completely by accident whilst on the way to the Glengowla Mines and decided to go and have a look.

The property is owned by Heritage Ireland and so admission is very reasonable. We bought a guide of the castle for 50 cents but you can also take free guided tours.

The property itself if very well preserved and contains a lot of information about the restoration of the castle as well as its past history and that of the O'Flaherty family.

I would recommend the castle to anyone who has a spare hour to spend as it's a great example of one of Galway's many Tower Houses.
