“Beautiful setting but very old and tired inside”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2009

We should have stayed at this hotel for 3 nights but after we had been shown our bedrooms (rooms 2 and 10) we felt we couldn't spend one night there and so we left. This beautiful house is set in lovely grounds on the edge of a lake and whilst the lounge and dining room are old they are not depressing like the bedrooms we were shown. The interior is not just old fashioned but worn and tired and needs updating. We did stay at two other homes in Ireland that were also listed in Ireland's Blue Book and they were out of this world. Currarevagh House need reinspecting.
The owner was very charming and polite and we were sorry that it had come to us having to leave on this note.

Of course we are very sorry to hear that this reviewer was not impressed with our guesthouse, however value his comments and take them to heart. We always appreciate any feedback we receive, good, or… not so good.
We were saddened by this incident, and disappointed that this guest did not feel they could experience what we offer at Currarevagh. With regard to inspections, I would like to assure all that we are, like all properties, inspected on a regular basis and have never in any way been found wanting in this regard. Ireland’s Blue Book is a proud organisation and does not suffer low standards.
We do not hide from the fact that our property is old; for most that is part of its charm, clearly here it is not what they were looking for. I must say that Currarevagh is the longest running guesthouse in Ireland; my great great grandfather first welcomed guests in 1880, organising a train carriage every two weeks from London Euston Station to Oughterard, our local village. My wife and I are now taking on the privilege of running this beautiful property, and perhaps if you ever return to this part of the world you shall try our unique experience in its fullest.
Needless to say all our bedrooms are different, with individual aspects and appeals. All are spotlessly clean and to a four star standard. We would normally offer our guests a choice on arrival. In this incident we were not made aware upon departure what the reason for leaving was; perhaps the issue could have been addressed. Without doubt, and this is backed up this being our first non 5 star review in two years, we offer exceptional service, wonderful food and a unique Irish Country House experience to guests.

We stayed for two nights and fell in love with the house. "Victorian charm" and old world experience come to mind. The drive from town was longer than expected but forgotten upon our arrival. The host, Henry, was delightful, welcomed us with tea & biccies in the front lounge. Our room (#1) was simply superb, overlooking the lake and front garden. It was more like a ballroom than bedroom. The bed was large and comfortable. Dinner had been suggested when we booked and was very well received. Yes, all guests dine at the same time but I think that adds to the charm of the hotel. The second night we dined in town and tea, coffee and cakes were available on our return to the house (about 10pm). Breakfast buffet was fantastic, no need for lunch! Simply the best accommodation we had during our two weeks in Ireland.

This is a beautiful country house overlooking Lough Corrib. Its situated at the end of a long private drive which is greats for walks. The house is warm and very comfortable but what makes this hotel really speciall are the people who run it who could not be more helpful and friendly.Breakfast and dinner are outstanding with second helpings if your waistine can take it! The rooms vary and are very comfortable with loads of hot water in the baths and towels. All are of high standard especially the front rooms of the house.I stayed here with my parents for 9 nights and loved every moment.Thehotel has boats with engines on the Corrib(watch the weather) and Connemara is a short drive away.Galway is about 20 mins away by why bother leaving this hotel !!!!

I agree with those who say this is a place for people who value tranquility and quiet relaxation over super modern amenities. Yes the decor of the rooms is somewhat faded but they are comfortable and the public rooms downstairs are cosy and have blazing peat fires.
Our host Henry was wonderful, keen, attentive, knowledgeable and super efficient. His wife Lucy produced vegetarian food for us which was the equal of the very best gourmet restaurants. Dinner at 8 is formally served but very relaxed, we kicked off our shoes and enjoyed the fine wines on offer. Then its back to those peat fires and comfy sofas for coffee and chocs. Everything is home made and breakfast is a treat with warm muffins and classic Irish soda bread.
Overall this is the perfect place to de-stress and let's hope it doesn't change .. it is a very special place

If the world's problems are getting to you, head for this place. Away from everything on the shores of Lough Corrib, this hotel [which was built by the current family's ancestors in 1830 and turned into a hotel by the same family in the 1880s and is still in the same family!] represents all that we feel we have lost that's calming, peaceful, friendly. The food is wonderful, no choice but given the quality of everything we were pleased someone else was doing the choosing. What it's not is a modern all-singing all-dancing place - there are no clocks or radios in the rooms - there is a TV room downstairs but when we were there for 4 nights nobody bothered to put it on [except to check the sports news!]. Many places advertise as being a home from home - this is the first one I've stayed in in 40 years of travelling that really felt like it - tea and cakes [homemade of course] every afternoon. Good company with a succession of guests from different countries - nobody monopolising the conversation - just interesting people. Henry and his wife and parents are true hoteliers. And I'd go back in a shot!

This is a unique experience at exceptional value. The house is an authentic Irish stately home set in incredibly beautiful surroundings. The hospitality is gracious and welcoming. The food is amazingly good and the serves generous. There is an excellent, well-priced cellar to compliment the cuisine.

The hosts could not be more genial or attentive. I have stayed at more expensive homes/castles in Ireland and none matches Currarevagh as an overall package. There is an authenticity here not found in many of the other theme-park establishments. For a start the owners and staff are actually irish with generations of experience in hospitality.

If you are looking for a luxurious, yet authentic place to spend some time in Ireland look no further. Having toured Europe for 3 weeks at rather nice places costing multiples of the tariff of Currarevagh I was left wondering why I had not cut to the chase and gone straight there again. I have been back 4 time thus far and intend to visit again next year. My favourite place to stay in Ireland.
