Our group of 9 long-time friends from college unanimously agree that this was our best Inn/B&B experience in Ireland. Currarevagh House has been in the Hodgson family for centuries and operated by them as an Inn for over 100 years, with Henry and his wife, Lucy (the next generation, in their early thirties), having taken over 2008. Both are well-educated and well-trained, Henry in hospitality management and Lucy in culinary arts, and have the right skills, passion and gracious attitude to make a stay with them truly unforgetable. The bedrooms are lovely and the public rooms outstanding, particularly the main living and dining rooms, both of which are beautifully decorated, yet very comfortable. Lucy’s cooking is fresh, imaginative and delicious, far and away the best food we had in Ireland. And Henry hosted us, for afternoon tea, pre-dinner Guiness, wine and whiskey, and after dinner cordials, as though the place were ours. Currarevagh House sits on a large, picturesque lake and is a haven for fishing, for tranquil, yet very interesting, nearby walks and hikes, and is a great base to visit the Galway area, the Aron Islands, the interesting villages of Cong and Clifton and for golfing/sightseeing in Connemara (they can recommend several wonderful drives and courses). Our only regret is that we had but three nights at Currarevagh House, as our group is already talking about scheduling a week-long reunion there in a few years.

  • Liked — seemed like our elegant, yet very comfortable home away from home, and Henry and Lucy

If you are seeking a few quiet days, replete with a genteel step back in time, a slower pace, in a stunning spot on our planet, with terrific food, run by competent...never 'in your face' & very accommodating folks, we would heartily say give them a call. This is an old home. Don't expect the most modern and up to date facilities. However, what you will leave with is a wonderful and fond memory.

  • Liked — private, remote and not 'done', the food
  • Disliked — the bed

This is not so much a hotel as an experience of manor house living long lost. This house and grounds are beautiful. You will not find such a truly quiet, peaceful experience in many places in today's world.

The lakeside setting on Lough Corrib is fabulous, and the hotel has boats available for guests usage.

They pull out all the stops for the evening meal (& breakfast). I'm vegan and let them know beforehand, in response to which they cooked a special meal and had many vegan delicacies which would not be easily available this far out the country! My meat eating compatriots informed me that their meals were of a similarly high standard.

A word of warning though - if you're used to soulless, cliched modern hotels (i.e. you want new beds, bathrooms, carpets etc) then this may not be for you.

If you're looking for warmth, character, peace and friendliness then this is second to none.

Spent three days here with my wife and we really enjoyed ourselves, in fact I can not fault the place. We consider ourselves experts on travelling in Ireland at this stage, and find that Currarevagh is one of the last genuine country houses to be found. It has not been overly developed, all the staff were local (and very entertaining!) and the owners clearly take great pride in what they do - I believe it is the longest running guest house in the country. The house is very comfortable and we found ourselves relaxing and destressing like in nowhere else. If you want to escape this is the place to come. Food is exceptional. Of all the places we have stayed in Ireland, this place would seem to me to be one that really offers a proper Irish Country House experience.
