“Silver Strand Beach, Beautiful”

Beautiful beaches, particularly Silver Strand. Lovely walk from the ferry to the beach, stopped for lunch at the local pub on the way back.

“Add Sherkin to your to-do list...you won't be disappointed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

Sherkin is easily accessible from Baltimore with only a 10-minute ferry that operates every hour during high season. Why not quench your thirst with an ice-cold drink over-looking the harbour while awaiting the ferry! On approaching Sherkin, you'd be forgiven for thinking you are approaching an island off the coast of New Zealand...no barren or limestone walls and landscape here as is akin to other islands around Ireland. There are plenty of trees, vegetation, flora and fauna. The island oozes beauty and tranquillity and is without doubt, an enjoyable escape from the mainland. The Islander's Rest is ideally located over-looking the harbour. While it is rough around the ages and screaming out for a modern make-over, the rooms are clean and basic and boast a sea-view which more than makes up for the tired look of the hotel. The food is satisfactory and offers a wide range of fresh fish to light bites. The local marina ensures a constant buzz and atmosphere on the island with people mooring for the night. There are plenty of walking opportunities to explore the island and its many beautiful beaches with stunning views of the sea and harbour. If the thirst gets the better of you, be sure to visit Darragh at the Jolly Roger! You'll have difficulty finding a more charming and quaint watering hole than here! You can unwind and enjoy watching the boats out in the harbour as you are looked after here! Be sure to sample the cuisine, it has an artistic and unique flair that is impeccably prepared and presented with. If you happen to experience the 'piano man', you are certainly in for a treat! Sherkin Island appeals to all ages with lots to see and do including boat rides, walking, wining and dining! It is enchanting and boasts beauty and charisma! I eagerly look forward to returning to Sherkin Island!

Silver Strands is a wonderful beach, a quiet little spot to enjoy. It is well worth the walk from the harbour.

“Sherkin Island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

Sherkin is wonderful and perfect for walking. Stunning scenery and the island has mercifully kept most of its original charm. We even heard a corncrake. Stayed in the travellers rest which was a bit pricey at €55 pps as accomodation is basic but the staff were really nice and the breakfast is good. Had a very disappointing evening meal in the Jolly Roger which was a shame as it seems a nice pub/restuarant otherwise. The chef tried to pass off as lobster a shell with most of the meat already removed! That is the sort of thing which must ruin foreign visitors perception of Ireland. The weather was brilliant however and ferry trip is fun and the little local bus was driven by a really cheery lady who gave us a tour of the island. We will definitely return.

Took the early ferry from Baltimore. Walked the island to Silver strand. Happened to be there when the weather was perfect. Had picnic with us, a perfect day.
