“Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

We stayed at this hotel during our travels through Ireland. Although we didn't have reservations, luckily the hotel was able to accommodate us. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the room was very nice and the food was good. We would recommend this hotel to those traveling in Ireland.

We booked this hotel for three night's following tripadvisor reviews and suggestions from a friend. The seaview was to be a surprise for my husband, a huge nautical fan, following his business in Dublin. So imagine my surprise when we were given a room with a rock wall view. When we asked about the seaview we were told it was not on the reservation and there was nothing else available. The booking engine clearly states "rooms provide sea views." The hotel website clearly states rooms have seaviews. There was no difference in pricing for rooms (except balcony), but boy was there a difference in view. We expected a sea view. We didn't even know there were rooms without sea views. To compound the situation, we have now found a tripadvisor review for the same day of arrival from someone who booked online day of arrival, was initially given a non-sea view and then switched to a sea view when they complained.

The whole check in experience was cumbersome. There is rarely anyone at the reception desk, so you have to get the bartender or serving staff. While friendly and cordial, they were not able to deal with issues like our rock wall view. You have to hunt up someone for assistance nearly every time you have a question. We understand the staffing balance issues, but front desk reception represents the business' identity, first line of contact and operational control from a customer perspective. A vacant space does make one wonder who is in charge.

Our choice was to accept the room or drive to another town and find lodging, so we stayed. The room itself was quite nice. The bathroom had a funny odor, but it didn't permeate the sleeping area. Unfortunately, that beautiful room was in a terrible location within the hotel. Not only did we have the 'stunning' view of a rock wall, but we had two streets with traffic within feet of the window. We had garbage trucks in the morning, 4 a.m.early departure conversations at the front door, late night revelers and the hotel's kitchen/dining room swinging doors that bang every time someone goes in or out. Once the kitchen closed about 10 or 11, that got quieter, until 3-4 am when someone was again going in and out. The room, # 15, was over those doors. All that doesn't make for a very good night's sleep.

We had asked, twice, for a fan to provide some kind of white noise and air circulation since open windows just aggravated the noise, but were told the hotel didn't have any fans. Hard to believe a hotel without air conditioning in their sleeping spaces didn't have any fans, especially after the hot summer this year.

The breakfast was okay, with several types of boxed cereal, croissants, juice and coffee/tea. You could order from the kitchen as well. The first day I had an omelette that was so overdone, it was brown and crusty on the outside. My husband had poached eggs that still had runny whites. We switched to cereal the other days. We did not eat in the restaurant.

The dining room public space is somewhat disappointing. There was no place in the hotel to sit and look at the water if you had a rock wall view room. The narrow balcony off the dining room/bar was dysfunctional in the rain and limited in size. The bar faces away from the water and there are only two tables in the bar area, from which you can really see the water and both have walls running along one side blocking much of the waterfront view. Fortunately the city park is a short walk down the street with lots of benches and terrific views.

The underground parking works well if you have a narrow car and any passengers or luggage are removed prior to parking. The spaces are tight to say the least. As mentioned in other reviews, there is no elevator, but staff will help with luggage to the upper floor.

The sleeping accommodations were quite good. The bed was comfortable and pillows firm enough to provide comfort and support. The room was large. The bathroom had one sink and a shower/tub combination with half wall glass panel. Unfortunately our glass panel was not completely sealed and the floor was soaked with every use. Wifi worked well in the room.

Had we received the room we expected, many of these elements would not have been an issue. Starting a stay with a major surprise like the room, makes one look more critically at other components of the stay. If it wasn't for the family connection to Cobh in this Year of the Gathering, we would not have stayed in the town. This property had such strong potential to be an outstanding stay based on reviews and website information. We were grossly disappointed.

Room Tip: Specifically state somewhere on your reservation what you do and don't want. Room 15 and Room 1...

Our stay was made more interesting thanks to the unscheduled arrival of a huge cruise ship due to adverse weather in the Irish Sea. We had lovely sunshine so sat on our balcony overlooking the harbour and watched all the activity! Didn't eat at the hotel but breakfast was fine. Our room was nice, light and spacious. Good service.

We loved this hotel. The staff was so helpful. There is no elevator but the staff is ready to lend a hand. Our room had a beautiful view of the harbor. They do literally mean water's edge as there was our window and then the water. The beds were so nice and comfy as well. We had to get the full Irish breakfast again just to see how it was prepared. The dining room had one wall of glass doors the looked upon the water. I wish we could have stayed and explored a few more days around Cobh. I do hope that we get back one day. No card keys at this place though just old school keys. Our little one had a twin size bed all to her self. More than enough room for the 3 of us.

Room Tip: There is no elevator but the staff is ready to lend a hand.

My husband and I stayed at the Water's Edge from 06 Sept to 09 Sept and truly enjoyed our visit. We had a sea view balcony room and the views were fantastic! The bed was comfortable, the staff was friendly, and the Jacob's Ladder restaurant inside the hotel had the best food for the lowest prices in town. (Don't leave without trying the Irish Guinness Beef Stew!) They are perfectly situated to visit everything the town has to offer, including the enormous cruise ships that dock right outside, just a few hundred feet away!
