“Very dated hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013 via mobile

I stayed here last summer with my girlfriend for a night and we were pretty disappointed with the place.

It appear that they spent a some money on doing up the reception and it looks quite nice and modern, however when we went up to our room it was like stepping into a time machine back to the 1950's. I'd describe the reception as a 'honey trap'!

The breckfast the next morning was pretty average, although we did get a laugh from the lady serving us as she gave us a full run down about her sick mother...it was a tad bizarre, but kind of funny too to be fair!

Over all I wouldn't really recommend staying here.

Dear James B,
Thank you for your recent review. While we are, naturally, disappointed to receive negative feedback in respect of any aspect of our business, we do look on it as an opportunity to change and improve those things that we are doing less well.
However, there are some things that are more easily remedied than others - namely those things which do not require substantial financial investment. Ours is a small, independent, family-run hotel and improvements are made to the property when economic conditions allow. In more favourable trading conditions, our bedrooms would have been refurbished some time ago but unfortunately this has not been possible. We do enhance our facilities as far as we can however. Since the time of your visit last year we have upgraded all bedroom TVs, replaced all hotel beds and redecorated many rooms.
As you point out, the hotel lobby was refurbished in more recent times and this exercise was intended to create a pleasant environment for all our customers in this part of the hotel. It was not intended, as appears to be suggested, to entice potential guests to stay in the hotel by deception.
It was particularly disappointing to read that your breakfast was merely average and for this we apologise. Serving an enjoyable breakfast is something that we take great care to do and it is something that is complimented on a regular basis. Indeed, we have introduced an entirely new breakfast menu in the time since your stay at the Bantry Bay last Summer.
To conclude, I thank you once more for your remarks and point out that it is regrettable that you didn't bring them to our attention at an earlier time so that both ourselves and TripAdvisor users could have enjoyed the benefit of your opinions sooner.
Yours sincerely,
Vivian O'Callaghan,
Bantry Bay Hotel

Driving through Bantry from Mizen Head in SW Cork making our way to Dingle we stopped for lunch in Bantry. We read about O'Connor's and parked there in the heart of town but O'Connor's seemed closed at lunch so we went next door to the pub in the Bantry Bay Hotel. I don't remember the details but I do know that everything we had was very good (sandwiches, soup, Guinness, wine), the server was pleasant and attentive, and the decor had a nice historic feel to it (artwork of Wolfe Tone and so on), and we had a really nice time. As it turned out, O'Connor's opened one minute late, because we saw them open just as we were being seated next door -- their loss! Reading other comments about the music nights at the Bantry Bay Hotel I look forward to returning some day to enjoy an evening there.

WE stayed at this family run hotel in May. We found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. It was nice to talk to local staff who had a good knowledge of local and surrounding areas to visit. The food was delicious, an excellent menue with great choices, including Gluten Free.
The accomodation was very clean and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this hotel, in the centre of Bantry town, walking distance to Bantry House . Lovely seafront walks etc. Loads to do and see. An ideal base for touring West Cork and Kerry. We would highly recommend this hotel. Great value for money and well worth a visit. Thank you for your hospitility

Super hotel, great value for money and right in the centre of town. Fantastic family run hotel with helpful and friendly staff, we ate in the bar and the food was really really good - can't speak more highly of it and would definitely return.

This is the best value for money hotel in Bantry and ideally located in the town centre. A family run hotel and everyone was really friendly. This was my first time staying at the hotel and i will definitely stay there again. All staff were very helpful & friendly. I got a very warm welcome on arrival. My room was spacious and really clean. While the decor may be a little dated, the hotel is well maintained and looked after very well. The breakfast menu was fantastic with Lots of choices for breakfast and great homemade brown bread. Margaret at reception was very helpful and gave me lots of information on things to do and places to visit near Bantry. Bantry was a great place to base myself while i went hill walking in Glengariff and Skibbereen and Schull. I'm looking forward to my next visit to Bantry and I'll be staying at the Bantry Bay Hotel again.

Thank for a memorable night recently in May with Jimmy Crowley & Steve Cooney - the most intimate of musical nights we have experienced in a while. The musical room was exactly as Jimmy described , a magical tavern of old and the sound was very special in it. Their range of songs and instruments and the history told behind so many of the songs was such an extra. To see musicians at their most natural, running the show themselves with your help and sharing their love of music & history was a rarity. The finale with all attending singing together with Nora's help was unforgettable. Please keep up the muscial venture in this unique venue & we will be back, tnx again, M & Co.

I was at a wonderful concert on Friday last in the Bantry Bay Hotel. The venue was absolutely beautiful. Candles around the oak panelled wall, with the musicians at top of the room surrounded by antique boats and ship lanterns. A wonderful night of Irish music, sad ballads and hilarious stories and songs. I returned the next day for lunch in the bar. The choice on the menu suited everyone tastes and my partner and I had a lovely lunch. I'm vegetarian and enjoyed the hearty vegetable soup and home made brown bread. I loved the bread so much I took away a loaf back to Dublin! Its not a cliche but the staff were genuinely friendly and attentive and that makes such an impression. Another impression is the attention to detail and cleanliness of every area of the hotel. A lovely evening and afternoon in a beautifully kept hotel whose owners have cared enough to maintain the antiques from its early days.
