“When the sun shines at the Parknasilla, there is nowhere better on earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2011

The day after St. Patricks Day my wife and I were treated to a night away by her cousin.
My wife's grandparents stayed there and we new it had lost it's magic during the 1990's and early 2000's.
However, we arrived on Friday 18th and had a room in the main house which was fabulous.
OK. The TV's aren't flat screen. But who watches the TV where you're in a "dream world" as George Bernard Shaw once called it. We were helped by the weather which was beautiful on the day we arrived. However, Peter Brennan's food was fabulous. Service on the whole was excellent although breakfast staff were rushed off their feet which meant slow service. But with weekend breakfast served until 11, and check-out at 12 on a Saturday, no need to rush.
And with the pianist in the piano bar playing The Kinks and Neil Young amongst others, we left the bar at 1.30 with staff still serving.
Having popped into the rather characterless Sheen Falls Lodge where service was indifferent (asked for no egg in €16 club Sandwich and ham was out of a packet) on the way back to Cork there is only one place to go if they keep up the Service. and that is Parknasiila.

Sneem is a beautiful scenic area and the location of this hotel is breathtaking. The staff are naturally friendly and very helpful. The standard of food in the restaurant is a delight. The problem is no one seems to be looking after the place and it is deteriotating fast. We travel a lot to this area and have just returned from another stay at this hotel and were all disapointed.
When you make your reservation by phone they allocate you a room so make all requests at this time. The old main part of the hotel is a MUST. Rooms tend to be a little bit pricier but much more comfortable. Last time we stayed in room 228( a standard room in the main house) and as this was pretty newly renovated it was lovely even if there was very little privacy in the bathroom without the blinds down.. This time we were in room 326( an executive room in the main house). A good sized room with a lovely side view of the sea from the bed. But the hand rail in the shower was rusty, one of the paintings and one of the blinds were stained. Again lack of maitenance and management. Saw room 101 in the new wing and was disgusted this was part of same hotel. Cold, no flat screen tv, very little choice of tv channels, dirty toilet and misserable shower. As you leave new wing and enter main building you can feel the heat building up as main building kept warm and cozy. In fact one of the problems in the main house is they ask you not to open any of the old sash windows and therefore bedrooms are very stuffy. At night it is advisable to phone reception and ask them to turn off heat in your room as can feel like a sauna at night. This said it is still advisable to book the main building as the rooms are supieror to the new wing.
Due to water pressure hot water was a daily issue in the spa. The thermal spa was out of order as were the jacuzzis. This was blamed on the adverse weather conditions and water pressure but the same problems exsisted when we stay in October 2010. On two days the only hot water for ladies was in the disabled shower area. The place was filthy and nobody cleared away the empty containers overnight. Also in this area were two rusty old wheelchairs, disgarded and negleted. On our last day one of the jacuzzis were working but I had to inform reception that the temperature was dangerously high and had not been monitored. Again no one seemed to be responsible for the area and standards are slipping. The pool was FREEZING, a film of dirt floating on top and the chemical levels left us all covered in rashes. This meant a visit to the local chemist for help. When travelling with young kids a pool is great and this is the reason a lot of guests pick this hotel and their villas.
It is with a heavy heart I write this review. Parknasilla has all the makings of a great hotel. Location, views, great staff, villas and lovely old main building but I can not recommend it any more to friends. It needs a complete overhaul and a strong management structure in place but with the economy struggling so will the Parknasilla hotel. I feel disapointment for the reception, restaurant, bar and guest services staff who work hard and even in "faulty towers" conditions continue to welcome visitors.

Dear Ms O’Connor,

I want to sincerely apologise for the poor experience during your recent stay at Parknasilla and would like to thank you for taking the subsequent call from our Marketing Director to discuss your complaint further.

It is always an uncomfortable experience to learn that the service we provide came up short as was obviously the case on this occasion. I would like to assure you that all of the problems highlighted are being dealt with prior to our reopening for the season in Mid March. I sincerely hope you find that to be the case when you revisit the Hotel which hopefully will give us the opportunity to prove that it may not be the end of the affair after all.
Kind regards

James Feeney
General Manager.

I am just back from a weekend break in Parknasilla and loved it. Went with 5 friends, got the train from Dublin and booked taxi to collect us to bring us across to hotel. Yes the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, but what a beautiful nowhere it is!!
Service friendly and efficient, breakfast excellent- try the porridge best I ever had! Dinner was included in package so dined on Saturday night, food was lovely and we had such an enjoyable evening.
Spa is beautiful, did not avail of treatments but the Thermal spa was fab. Loved the Canadian hot tubs.
Bedrooms were lovely and beds really comfortable. We booked a 2 night package, which was excellent value.
I would highly recommend this hotel, cannot wait to return.

This visit was the latest of many memorable stays at Parknasilla - perhaps our favourite hotel of anywhere in Ireland or Britain!

On this occasion we had booked a Parknasilla Suite and looked forward to a relaxing stay. PJ provided a warm welcome and facilitated an easy and quick check in. We were greatly surprised and delighted to be shown to the Presidential Suite (upper suite on West Wing) which is a good distance from reception. This forms part of some relatively newly built accommodation and turned out to be a very private, comfortable and large suite which lacked for nothing (unless perhaps a door bell as it was quite a distance from bedroom or attached office area to the hallway door and outer entrance door!). The views from the wrap-around balcony were fabulous and one could entertain here without ever using the public areas of the hotel. Accommodation staff were excellent and non intrusive. But then we always had this experience in the past.

The dining options were good and although some people complain about the evening dining arrangements and lots of children running around, we must say that neither of these were evident or issues for us. We dined in the dining room each evening of our stay and we were not disappointed at all. The food was excellent and choice was good. The wine list was good also and the sommelier Pat was a great new asset for Parknasilla.

We also enjoyed a lunch some weeks earlier in the sun lounge (bar) which was better than we had ever experienced for there in the past. The caeser salad was to die for! And the pasta was great!

The bar is unchanged and as homely and comfortable as ever. The bar manager Maurice - great guy - is a very professional addition to Parknasilla and of course other staff such as Adrian always make one feel at home.

Our visits to the pool and spa were pleasant experiences and this redeveloped part of hotel provides a relaxing environment. It was not as busy as it can be, we understand, when we were there.

When making a reservation it is good to know that internet access is not available in all rooms. I recall last Christmas when staying with some family members that a room change was necessary as internet access was a issue for one of the party.

It was wonderful as always to meet and have a few words with Denis. I suppose he is our link to the past good times at Parknasilla and this guy is perhaps one of Parknasilla's best advertisements - his helpfulness, attention to detail, wit and humour as well as professionalism helped to make this a memorable stay.

Finally, we must mention another charming and knowledgeable member of staff - Kevin. As always his conversation, wit and humour (and patience with one of us at the shooting range) made for a very very pleasant experience.

We will return in 2010! We know the Parknasilla of old and the newer version and whatever little quibbles some other reviewers express about faded glory or whatever, it remains for us the top choice resort for a relaxing break away from it all. When one enters the gates one enters a different world. Well done, Parknasilla yet again!

I had a feeling this hotel would not be grt because of its trip advisor rating & as usual I was proved right.
I stayed because we were staying in one of the villas so I didnt think the hotel would matter & it would be grt to use the facilities etc; however very let down by all I encountered here.
The villa was stunning & the setting a location second to none dont get me wrong I would absolutely recommend staying in the villas but just dont have your hopes up for the hotel.
NO FOOD AFTER 6PM ... Yes you read correctly NO FOOD AFTER 6PM - Unless you fork out an arm & a leg for the pricey restaurant but kids are not allowed after 5.30 ... so they give all their business to a bar in sneem "Its only 5 mins away" WHY? Why not serve bar food til 10pm like most hotels?? I do not understand Management here they are losing money big time & not impressing their guests that pub must be delighted with themselves.
Spa no grt shakes, pool cold hottubs not working, well the 1st evening 1 of them was working but the following day the working 1 had been emptied so none worked ..... steam room not working properly, saly grotto out of order.
I just get the impression this hotel needs to do more for its guests - start by getting rid of the rules board in the lobby (no kids bla bla bla, not in this bar not after 5.30 etc etc) then serve food in the bar til late, then make sure your spa facilities facilitate your guests.
Sorry I would not recommend Parknasilla at all, go stay in a hotel in Kenmare at least when your dumped at 6pm you have a choice where to eat as the only place in Sneem to eat wasnt great.
