“Overnight in October”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2011

I had forgotten about the Horse Sales this weekend so our usual B&B was booked. Ben View was an alternative budget priced guest house meeting the main criteria for this weekend being within walking distance of the pubs/music in town.

This is a charming old world type accommodation, very welcoming with a large array of nick nacks which some might find give the place charm, others may consider dated? A matter of personal taste? We had room 3 on the first floor, a mid size room with a 5ft and 4ft bed an adequate shower room, kettle for brewing and an excellent hair-dryer. The latter could not be plugged in and used in front of the full length mirror but apparently made a change from the usual toy town dryers!

We were in town for the music with friends so had a couple of hours shut eye before going out for the night. This was peaceful and the bed was very comfortable.

Returning at 2am from our night out we carefully and quietly returned and went up to our room. Being quiet took a bit of skill as the doors are not the quietest closing items and could do with a thin strip of the draught proofing felt just to soften the noise. The thoughtfulness of some quests is never completely matched by all and just about 8.00 a herd of beast in hobnail boots started clattering in the room above.

Breakfast was very good choice of Cornflakes or Muesli followed buy a full Irish (syrup pancake instead of pudding?) for me and Scrambled egg for Chris. tea and coffee toast and bread. The only problem being the one hour 8.30-9.30 service time. (After a night out we prefer 9.30-10am)

Overall a good friendly budget priced B&B in a very good location and apart from the inconsiderate behaviour of some other guests would have been an excellent stay.

Room Tip: We had room 3 at the rear and would suggest avoiding this in favour of rooms 4&5 on the top floo...

After a number of years, we recently returned to our beloved West of Ireland, anticipating many 21st century changes. We were delighted and relieved to find our favourite B&B in Clifden -- Ben View House -- better than ever. Ben View, in the town centre, is a generational family-run establishment, and Eileen and Des Morris have seen to it that the best of Irish warmth and tradition is ever-present. The rooms are comfortable, clean and charming -- breakfast is delicious, bountiful and served in the prettiest dining room in Ireland -- and the kindnesses extended by the Morrises are heartfelt. Clifden, too, remains a constant -- still the archetypical Irish country town, overflowing with colour, "craic" and Connemara magic. Mark this one down!

Stayed 2 nights in this wonderful B&B and we were not dissappointed at all. Very warm and friendly welcome. We were in Connemara for a golf Pro-am and this B&B was a perfect base only 20 mins from the Golf club. Up early on the first morning (6am) and we were served with a great breakfast of Cereal, Toast, Eggs and Tea/Coffee - delicious and just what we needed to get us going for the day. On the second morning we had a little more time to burn and we were served with a fantastic Full Irish Breakfast after which we retired to the comfortable television room where we took in the Ireland vs Italy game in the Rugby world cup. Great weekend all round....Highly recommend this place and right on the corner of the main street close to all Pubs and Restaurants - We will be back next year without a doubt.

Room Tip: We has rooms 1,4 & 5 and all met our needs perfectly

Stayed here for one night in August, in a big room at the back of the hotel. Not much of a view, but it was incredibly quiet, which is just what we had asked for. The place has lots of character, breakfast room full of memorabilia and knick-knacks. Breakfast, by the way, is plentiful and excellent. We definitely recommend this place. Clifden is a charming little town. Be sure to walk the skyroad for wonderful views, and go to the Upstairs Downstairs café on main street for excellent coffee!

Sadly only stayed 1 night. This establishment has all that is best in Irish hospitality. Wonderful atmosphere. Ornaments, "nick nacks" and flowers beyond belief. Beds comfortable. Rooms adequate. Breakfast unbelievable (in the best sense). Freshly cooked, beautifully served, and the tables themselves were laid like works of art. As to value - you wouldn't get better anywhere.
If you are within striking distance of Clifden give it a try. It's not surprising that this family business has survived 80 years. Long may it continue to do so

I've stayed in B&B's all over Ireland over many years and have never seen a mattress with duct tape keeping it together before! The hosts were surely very pleasant and the antiques were everywhere, but it was like staying at your favorite aunt's house where you don't mind those things so much.
We looked forward to the pancake breakfast for a change, the berries were plentiful but the pancakes were partly burnt!
The linens were very clean, but the furniture was broken, the shower doors didn't close and there were no shades on the lamps. Honestly, they need to get new mattresses and fix things!
Three stars to me says that I'll get a basic room where things work and a decent breakfast.
That all being said, the location was great, the room was quiet at night and the table setting was beautiful - just be ready to think of it as a relative's house, not a B&B.
