We have stayed at The Quay House in Clifden 2 times now and were always warmly taken care of by owners, Paddy and Julia Foyle.
This was originally the Harbor Master's house overlooking the harbor at Clifden. The decor throughout is sophisticated with large suites tastefully decorated. The views are spectacular and attention to our comfort always a prioity. There are sitting rooms for reading, relaxing and pouring through interesting books, magazines and memorabilia, not to mention a wonderful conservatory for dining.
We were always greeted by a peat fire in the front sitting room with pressed coffee, scones and charming conversation with Julia who provides a true feeling of welcome. Even though there were other travelers present, there is always a feeling of calm, quiet joviality.
Clifden Castle is just 5 minutes above The Quay House via the Sky Road to Westport.
For us, a trip to Ireland would not be complete without a stay with Paddy and Julia. Oh yes, and of course, Bob the pug.

We stayed in the Quay House for two nights on a ten-day tour through Kerry, The Burren and Connemara.
The location is excellent. - not only for Clifden town center (5 min. walk) but also as a starting point for day trips through the region. The name suggests fishing boats and a waterfront. You'll find both, but don't expect a busy or quaint harbour in summer. At low tide there's not enough water but a lot of mud.
The rooms are the real draw. Tastefully decorated, clean and with a lot of atmosphere. We stayed in a room with a fireplace and we needed it (in June, mind!). The house is historical and so is the insulation. But don't let that discourage you. There are several blankets.
The owners are amiable but appeared to be a little too focussed on their returning guests and the celebrity clients they served in the past (e.g. German ex-president von Weizsaecker).
The breakfast is "all right" for continental Europeans and probably "great" for anyone who loves British style.
Overall, I would definitely recommend "The Quay House", especially to middle age or older travellers who can afford the rather upscale rates (price/value relation).

We spent 3 nights at the “The Quay House” in Clifden. We had a wonderful, big room with a small terrace on the 3rd floor (with cable TV). From there we watched the tide coming in and going out of the bay. Paddy and Julia Foyle are an absolute delight: always there, helpful, knowing everything about the area and willing to provide ideas, this is definitely a B&B to recommend.
When we got there, our room was not ready yet, and breakfast time was over, it was about 10:30 am. We were after a long flight, tired from the road, and not willing to go anywhere else, so we just relaxed in the cozy living room. Julia prepared breakfast for us - she was ready to offer her full traditional Irish breakfast, but we were happy with just coffee, jams, toast and fresh fruits.
Her restaurant recommendations were fantastic: Marconi, G’s and Mitchell’s.
The B&B is not in the town center, but only about 5-10 minutes leisurely walk, in a quiet area that we enjoyed. Perfect location, we loved our time at the Quay House.

This is a very nice B&B with exceptionally friendly owners who will make you feel at home. The decor is nice and the breakfast was excellent. It's a nice, quiet and scenic location. Very easy to walk into town. I would definitely recommend it.

I stayed in The Quay house recently with my husband and two children during a trip around the mid/north west of Ireland. We had never stayed in a B&B before so I was a bit nervous. The Quay House exceeded our expectations. Julia Foyle the owner and her staff (particularly Noreen) made us feel relaxed and welcome without being overbearing. The views of the bay from the bedrooms are absolutely great, particularly from the front of the house. We had a family studio which even had its own small kitchen. Breakfast in a beautifully restored Victorian style conservatory, catered to everyone's taste - fresh local produce, fruit, homemade breads/cakes (baked by a wonderful Slovakian young man) jams and a delicious menu offering an array of international breakfast delights.

People often critise Ireland for being expensive, but I honestly have to say that the Quay House is great value for money and a fantastic place to stay, be it for a couple looking for a romantic getaway or a family on holiday. We will definitely return!
