“A lovely house!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2008

A very professionally run bed and breakfast. I brought my 88 year old wheelchair using mother who was more than pleased by the downstairs location of the beautifully furnished room. Breakfasts are very good here, with unusual light and more filling choices. The Byrnes are quietly genial hosts, with plenty of experience in the hospitality industry, having worked overseas and with Aer Lingus. The house is beautifully furnished, has lovely peaceful gardens, a very friendly venerable cat in the grounds, and a stream running through the grounds. the scenery to the fore and to the back is blissful. The only downside is that the house is located about one mile west of the town. without a footpath all the way. What is more, parking is extremely difficutly , at times, in the town, and is restricted to three hours. For younger people this is absolutely no problem, but maybe for an older person the walk is not practicable. One could always eat their main meal before returning to Mal Dua House. It is a lovely place!

Unlike the description of "Exceptional standards, Personal attention and Award winning cuisine in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere", I found the opposite!
The reception was rather unfriendly on a wet, dark night having to wait 15 mins unitl someone came to check us in! one of the rooms was musty smelling ( very strong) and not pleasant to sleep in. The other room although big and airy had a tempermental toliet, a broken bathroom door and a shower that dribbled water! We were aked to pay in full on arrival so on leaving we did not get as much as a goodbye or thankyou! It has potential to be a great place but the owner/ mamager seemed very unconcerned and about her guests! This was certaintly not a warm, Irish, hospitable guest house. I would not recommnend it.

We booked in at the Byrnes Mal Dua House and Restaurant for a 3 night stay via the internet
When we arrived we were told that the restaurant was no longer and had been closed all year. (We later found out that it had been closed since 2005).
The nearest restaurant was in Clifden a 25 minutes, 1 mile walk away along the unlit main road into Clifden without any pavements.
The courtesy bus refered to on the net no longer operates and when we asked the hotel to book us a taxi the proprietor was very negative. We told her that the 10% service charge was unacceptable and in view of their misleading web site we were very disatisfied.
The following day she agreed to take us into Clifden in her car and to collect us after our meal.
We were very disapointed with this guest house, we do not drink and drive, and only chose accomodation which serve evening meals.
This spoilt our visit to Conemara.
As of today they are still advertising on their web site as Mal Dua House and Restaurant and their award winning restaurant.

We arrived in Clifden (3 families including a 2 year old and a 3 1/2 year old) to stay for a week in a pre-paid house. Much to our disappointment it was totatlly unacceptable even to spend one night. We were extremely fortunate to discover Byrne's Mal Dua with excellent, spacious, clean, nicely and tastefully furnished rooms. But the best part was Peter the proprietor who was extremely friendly and helpful, giving us tips on what to see in the area and his choice of restaurant for dinner which was, I believe, as good as any in Clifden. The children were very warmly received and accommodated and baby-sitters were found for both of our evenings out. He then booked us rooms at two other B & B inns which were similar and perfect for our needs, one in Killarney and one in Bunratty right next to the Shannon airport for our departure early the next a.m. He gave excellent recommendations for routes to take and things to see en route. Our trip went from disaster to superb in about an hour's time, thanks to our good fortune in finding this excellent establishment.

The Byrne Mal Dua House is a very comfortable, very professionally run B&B, priced a bit above the average for the Clifden area (though all of Conemara is quite expensive in the summer). The Byrnes are former Aer Lingus professionals, and the organization and consistency of the B&B shows it.

The breakfasts are quite generous and satisfying, with multiple choices. There is a lounge and honor bar which is nice after a day walking out in the beautiful area. The advice to tourists (i.e. "go to Inishboffin") is right on.

There is not so much of the personal warmth, or regional Irish feel, that we were hoping to experience, however. It was very easy to meet with and talk to other guests, but not so much with the management (who were always fine, not rude or short). The rooms are large, furnished in a sort of pan-British upper middle class contemporary manner.

All in all, very comfortable, sort of pricey, not quirky, but a great base for exploring the region.

  • Liked — Very well run and reliable
  • Disliked — Not terribly original
  • Tips/Secrets — The Royal Auto Club probably has the best directory of B&Bs in the area

I've stayed at this lovely place twice. Both times the rooms were large, clean, warm and very comfortable. The owners and staff were lovely and helpful and the grounds really interesting with stone walls and a stream.

The thing I like best is that there's a dirt road out back that swiftly hops over a low hill and suddenly you're in the wide open wilds of Connemara. There are streams and wild flowers and lovely views of the Twelve Bens mountains in the distance. It was great to get a morning walk amidst so much beauty before a hearty breakfast.

The breakfast menu was extensive (traditional Irish, bagels and smoked salmon and more) and the breakfast room is lovely - lots of glass windows and a decorous yet relaxed feel.

I note that other reviews said there was a problem with the hot water, but I certainly never experienced it. The showers were hot and, by Irish standards, had plenty of water pressure.

I've recommended Byrnes Mal Dua House to friends and will happily stay there again.

I've stayed at Byrnes Mal Dua House twice. It's located about a mile outside Clifden and the thing I liked best is that the dirt road out the back leads quickly over the hills and out into the lovely wilds of Connemara. Long views of the Twelve Bens mountains, flowers, streams and the vastness of the landscape. And I simply turned around and followed the road back when I'd had enough.

The rooms I had each time were large, lovely, clean and quiet. A great night's sleep. The breakfast choices were excellent and delicious. The hosts were friendly and full of advice about local spots to visit.

I note that other reviewers had hot water problems, but I experienced none. There was plenty of hot water and the shower, by Irish standards, had plenty of pressure. I'd guess they had a period of problems with their hot water heater, because both times I found the owners very helpful and happy to solve any little problems or questions.

I really like the place and have recommended it to friends.
