“Comfortable homey place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2007

The Friar's lodge is located in Kinsale within walking distance of the downtown hub. The rooms vary in size from large to small but all are relatively new and all very clean. There is an excellent breakfast. We have stayed here twice while playing golf at the Old Head course which is about a 35 minute drive from Kinsale.

Our group of eight golfers stayed one night here while playing Old Head. This was the first night of an eight night golfing trip. Friars Lodge was reasonably priced, very clean, comfortable, and convienently located. We didn't need a lot of help from the front desk but they were pleasant enough. I would stay there again without hesitation.

  • Liked — spacious clean rooms, great showers
  • Disliked — small elevator but it's only two levels

We stayed at Friar’s Lodge for two nights. Fortunately for us this coincided with a coach-load of American tourists who filled the main hotel building. This meant we were upgraded to one of the four holiday homes at the rear of the hotel. Our house (mansion?) had four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a huge kitchen and comfy lounge. The quality of the facilities was second to none. The private car park felt very safe and the hotel staff was more than willing to help us make the most of our holiday by contacting local excursion operators on our behalf. Add to that the superb breakfast (Kinsale Kippers not be missed) and our stay at Friar’s Lodge was one of the highlights of our Irish adventure.

Stayed at the Friars Lodge mid-April for two nights. It was more like a small hotel than a B&B. Location was central and quiet. There was ample parking and the room was very spacious. Although we enjoyed our stay, we did have some remarks. The mattress protection cover was plastic, which made sleeping a sweaty event, the staff was a bit indifferent and the breakfast was disappointing. A good breakfast should consist of several types of bread (there was only white and brown toast and soda bread - typical Irish, but not everyone's fare), coldcuts (there were none), cheeses (menu stated there were several types, but there was only one - I asked) and yoghurts (there was plain and fruit yoghurt, but when plain yoghurt ran out, there was none anymore - I asked). Of course there were also traditional Irish breakfast items, such as porridge, scrambled eggs with salmon, and the fully cooked breakfast, but when travelling for a long time in Ireland, you really tire of these things.
Nevertheless, we had a good stay at the Friars Lodge.

Stayed here for two nights in April. It's more like a small hotel than a B&B. I think our feeling were affected by the fact that we had just left Friar's Glen in Killarney which was our favorite B&B of our trip. Friar's Lodge didn't have the small personal touch feel we had come to expect from a B&B. Also our room looked out onto a wall and the parking lot so it was a bit dreary feeling. The room itself was large and comfortable and spotlessly clean, if a bit institutional feeling.
Breakfast was quite good. There were lots of brochures and restaurant menus in the entry room. The staff were pleasantly efficient. The location is great with plenty of convenient parking, just a few minutes walk from the center of Kinsale and the harbor.
I wouldn't mind staying here again - but I would consider other places.
