“What A Disappointment!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2005

We recently spent 3 nights at Perryville House as part of a group of 6 couples. We have all traveled extensively and the consensus of our group was that the hotel itself was mediocre and the staff was terrible. We were assigned rooms on all floors of the inn, which has 4 or 5 levels and no elevator. Unfortunately the manager on duty, who was extremely rude, handed out the keys in an apparently random manner and the members of the group who have difficulty climbing stairs were assigned a room on the 4th floor. The more physically fit in our group who had rooms on the ground floor wanted to switch with them, and although this was eventually accomplished on our second day, it was made clear that it was a huge inconvenience. The same manager just watched as his guests struggled up several flights of stairs with their luggage, and when the couple with the bad knees requested assistance, he complained loudly the whole time he was helping them. He also announced to us that if we got "his" walls dirty, we would be given a rag and be forced to clean them. (Not sure what that was all about, since we are not a group of sticky-fingered 8-year-olds and nobody came close to touching "his" walls). Although there are apparently nicer rooms than the ones we had, our rooms were marginal. There was no clock in the room, no outlets in the bathroom, no dresser drawers (only shelves in the closet) and the rug appeared to be made from rope.....it was truly painful to walk on it barefoot. The shower was miniscule, although there was also a separate tub. Since, not surprisingly, there is no air conditioning, leaving your window open is a must, so there is street noise to contend with, and since there are no screens on the windows, insects can also be a problem.

I've been reading some of the reviews of this B&B with interest. I have only recently found this site and have been meaning to share my views on Perryville with a bigger audience than my immediate friends and family. Myself and my wife stayed here in 2001, the night after we got married. I don't think that I have ever experienced a colder reception than from the lady of the house from the moment we arrived. As newly weds I suppose we expected people to be extra friendly once they hear that you just got married, in this instance it was the exact opposite, from the off hand way that we were greeted at check in, to the displeasure displayed when we requested a wake up the next morning, to the frown we got when we returned a little late that evening. I couldn't actually believe that someone could make you feel so unwelcome. I have to admit that the place is absolutely stunning and the room was gorgeous, but the overall experience was terrible. We went back to Kinsllae last October (2004) and stayed in the Blue Haven (fantastic by the way) and decide to drop by to see if the same people owned Perryville and to see would they still be as rude. We walked up to the door and, again, from the moment the lady owner opened the door we felt immediately unwelcome. We truned around and left immediately. What a pity as the place has fantastic potential. Best of luck to anyone who stays there.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Perryville House in Kinsale. Since this was our first trip to Ireland and Perryville was to be our first night, I wanted to do something extra special. All the books had positive writeups and therefore we were willing to pay the premium. We got a top-of-the line room overlooking the town. Here's our assessment:

Good news - plenty of parking right in front of hotel; wonderful, helpful mgr. (Barry), who offered lots of good advice; beautiful home, very nicely decorated; very large room; very modern, spacious bathroom, nice breakfast; easy access to town (you are in town)

Bad news - value for the dollar - our rating of neutral/average is based on price-performance. We stayed at two other B&Bs in Ireland during our stay and both offered similar quality, but considerably lower prices. Granted, Kinsale has become a very trendy place and therefore can command high prices, but this is extreme. More specific feedback - a nice contintental bkfst is included in room price, but hot food is extra; room does not have water heater for coffee, tea; no outlets for hair-dryer near a mirror; the view is nice, but during low tide you are looking at mud and it smells bad; since the room faces the street, you are subject to traffic noise - this is non-trivial because there is construction in town which causes frequent backups

Net-net. Nice place, wonderful mgr., but does not justify the high price. We would look for an alternate place if we visit Kinsale in the future.

Perryville House was a charming place to stay. The drawbacks were they requested that you leave your room key in a bowl by the desk when ever you went out. Since this made us uncomfortable we had planned to leave the do not disturb sign out and not have them come in. That did not stop them. They knew you were not there because they had your key, so they went in to make up the room anyway. If this does not bother you it is a great place in a very quaint town.

The Perryville House in Kinsale was the best! It's located in the heart of this charming town. We had a superior room with a gorgeous view of the harbor. The bed was a gorgeous antique- the bathroom was spacious and wonderful with top notch shower, tub, etc. They even have CD players in the rooms. The whole place is so tastefully decorated and the service was perfect! We wih we could have stayed there longer!
