I live a few miles outside Clonakilty and Richy's Cafe has been me and my friends' regular lunchtime meet-up/catch-up haunt since it opened two or three years ago, and I've had only positive experiences here. The food is top-notch, always fresh and there are good non-meat options – the lentil-burger currently on the menu is a succulent "beefy" winner and the soup of the day is never less than really good. The staff are informed and friendly and appear to like their jobs, and I've never found the food to be unreasonably slow in arriving. Foibles are cheerfully accommodated (Earl Grey with a slice of lemon is No Problem instead of a "Earl Who?" or "We haven't got lemons") and the owner/head-chef cares about food and customer satisfaction like Andy Murray cares about winning – you can see how assiduously he addresses every less-than-great review on Tripadvisor. Sure Richy's isn't the only good place to eat in Clon, and sure you can find cheaper places (Supervalu is only a stone's throw away) but in my opinion the quality's up to anything you could find in Cork, Dublin or London, and what you get is good value for money – even the vanilla ice-cream is made on the premises and has flecks of real vanilla-pod in it. Kids and mums with pushchairs are welcome too, and not grouchily tolerated. Life's just that little bit better when you walk out.
