The hostess provided genuine and personalized service, from meeting our breakfast requests, to driving us into town, to helping research and connect us with our family lineage. She was a wealth of knowledge about the area, and made excellent recommendations for local restaurants. She was a sheer joy to deal with. We would not hesitate to recommend her to others.

We stayed here for two nights and loved the place. The rooms were comfortable, bathrooms were updated and clean. Breakfasts were cooked to order and delicious. Maeve, the owner, was wonderful. She was very friendly and helpful with choosing dinner arrangements and sites to visit. She went above and beyond by helping me track down a relative. While we were sightseeing during the day she made phone calls and then gave us a map so we could visit the original homestead of a family member. I highly recommend this place.

My husband and I have stayed at Macliam Lodge on a number of occasions during the past few years and we have found the owner Maeve a lovely friendly lady who makes us feel welcome the moment we arrive. On this occasion we were attending a wedding in Dunmore House Hotel. We were anxious to leave our car at the B & B and Maeve instantly offered to drive us to the hotel which was so kind of her. It is comfortable and quiet at night and we can always be assured of a great sleep !! We look forward to the great breakfast in the morning and the friendly chat with Maeve as she makes sure everybody is looked after in first class style. We will be back.

We had 2 nights in the B&B and counted ourselves lucky to have found this gem. Maeve is the owner and was extremely friendly and helpful and made us feel at home - an outstanding host who went above and beyond to meet our needs. Breakfast was delicious and we would have liked to stay a few extra days - will definitely be back.
Fantastic value and location wise just perfect to see local attractions in the area and visit West Cork and Kerry.

Room was just average. Owner very nosey. Kept asking questions and listening in on conversations, very uncomfortable. I inquired on arrival was it possible to get a later breakfast as breakfast finishes around 10 and was advised to get a breakfast roll in the local filling station, eventhough I had paid for breakfast, quite a rude response. To top it off a member of staff stuck his head in the window of my bathroom at check out time! Luckily I was dressed, had it been 5 mins earlier I would have been getting out of the shower. Unbelievable!! Talk about an invasion of privacy. Clonakilty is fantastic but will never stay here again.

Maevewilliams, Owner at Macliam Lodge, responded to this review, September 15, 2010
Here at Macliam Lodge we take great pride in our friendliness and make every effort to engage in friendly conversation with our guests and to make them feel at home . We feel this is the essence of staying in a Bed and Breakfast accommodation and sets us aside from the anonymity of what hotels have to offer.

We serve breakfast from 8 am to 10 am and when some of our younger guests express an interest in having a later wake-up, I always try to be informative and let them know that the service station next door provide an option of an all-day breakfast. It is not possible to offer ‘some guests’ a later breakfast as we must commence clearing the dining room and kitchen after the breakfast before we start the guest bedrooms.

We have an 11.30 check out time and this is quite clearly stated in each room and so by 12pm if people have not made an effort to vacate their room, we give a knock at the door (or in this case the bathroom windows ) to remind people of this . My husband under no circumstances could not, and certainly would not, put his head in any bathroom windows.

We were very disheartened and disappointed to read this review. It makes us feel that maybe some guests are more suited to hotel accommodation, where they can return home at 7am and not disrupt a lot of other guests. Most likely they would not have to engage in any conversation with hotel owners etc. either. We certainly hope that they do return to Clonakilty and acquire accommodation more suitable to their requirements.

One of the most comfortable beds I've slept in with fantastic food the next day and a host willing to go out of her way to help. The cleanliness of the place is a credit to the host.
