Heard very good reviews about this restaurant, but also some mixed, so definitely wanted to give this a go. We've been in the hotel pub before which is really nothing special.,It's a lovely location by the sea and it would be great to have a nice restaurant there. So we took the whole extended family there for a birthday meal.
The staff was really friendly and attentive, we were practically the only guests at the time (went for an early bird). The breads served were very good, some tapenade with it would have been better though. We had fish cakes for starters which were really average, bland and small, the sauce on them tasted rather like milk. Main courses were okay, duck confit, I would have expected this to be crispy and aromatic, it was rather soggy and bland. Somebody in another post mentioned this could be due to the cloches they use - probably that's part of the reason although cannot imagine the only one. I think they shouldn't bother with these cloches, it feels a bit pretentious - and dated like the rest of the interiour. It's by no means a fine dining experience - if this was marketed and equipped like a down-to-earth family restaurant with emphasis on cosyness I would probably not criticise the food so much. The windows were dirty too. I feel really bad writing all this but it would be so easy to change these things if they really cared. The manager really needs to look at this place, and make some changes. It has good potential but a long way to go. Won't go back for a long time. The best experience were the friendly waiters though, they tried their best!
