We just got back from the 6 day tour of the Southwest of Ireland with Wolfhound Adventure Tours (http://www.wolfhoundtours.com). It was an amazing experience. I highly recommend it for active families that don’t want to sit on a bus all day. It’s a small private tour (there were only 10 of us) and a one man show—Dave O’Conner is the driver, narrator, and entertainer. He is very knowledgeable and articulate; quite sharp actually.
The activities were fun and provided an opportunity to see the beautiful scenery of SW Ireland. Over the week, we went surfing in the Atlantic (not as cold as you would expect and a ton of fun even for 40+ year olds), horseback riding on the beach, cycling and tons of hiking. No worries if you have a less adventurous person in your group—we had an 11 year old and 71 year old who skipped some of the more strenuous activities; they were happy to stay on the bus and chat with Dave or go for a walk.
Dave is a master story teller and provides a historical perspective that is both enlightening and highly entertaining.
Best of all, you visit places that are off the beaten-path of the big tour busses. You don’t wait in line and you aren’t surrounded by lots of other tourists. On numerous occasions we had the opportunity to stop and talk to the locals (seems everyone knows Dave).
The accommodations were small, privately-owned B&B’s and quite nice. Full breakfasts were provided each day. Lunch was usually a picnic in some very scenic place along the way.
We are thinking about going back to see some of the other parts of Ireland just to do another tour with Wolfhound. I highly recommend it.
