Stayed with friends in Dorrian's Imperial Hotel (to give it it's full title) for only one night on a tour of Donegal. Mary on reception is a gem - she made us feel so welcome. The hotel is very much a throw back to the good old days with it's antique furniture and lush furnishings. Our bedroom was quite large - the bed although not the now customary King size was very comfortable and quaint.
The bathroom adequate, the bar area comfortable with doors leading to a function room where a "barn dance" was being ran that night. This was really a ceili or set dancing night with the tour bus of german tourists being shown the rudiments of good old fashioned irish set dancing.
Ballyshannon itself I have to say was quite disappointing - a visit to Creevy Pier - approx 6 kms from hotel to have dinner did not work out as we had not thought to make a booking and despite there being empty tables and not that many people there we were told that 4 extra dinner orders would "put too much pressure on the kitchen" - hardly what one would expect in the middle of a recession?
Creevy Pier itself is lovely - pity there is only one place to eat.
Things went from bad to worse then when on returning to Ballyshannon we had what was perhaps the worst meal of our lives in a place called Maggies!!! Suffice to say I still feel nauseous at the thought of it.
Breakfast in the hotel was the usual fare served efficiently and pleasantly - I would recommend Dorrians but Ballyshannon is not somewhere I would rush back to!
