“Amazing house, amazing story”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

We stayed in the castle for a lovely weekend and I was told by the taxi driveer, i fyou do one thing, make sure you do the guided tour of the house.

The house was built by the present owners father, Marshall Doran, who it seems was quite the eccentric. Much love and care was put into the house and it shows. You'll hear tales of wheeling and dealing, his days in the merchant navy, shipwrecks, monkeys and drunken stone masons. Much of it I'm sure is true! The Marshall Doran collection is the highlight of the tour. Deep in the basement is the largest private collection of fossils and armour in Ireland. We got a short version of the tour for half price, but it took over an hour, so who knows what else is on the full tour.

“Great way to spend a couple of hours”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

Belleek Castle itself is a quirky mix of kitsch and a must see if you are in the area. Four of us chose to take the tour to see the whole of the castle. The museum in the basement had a fantastic collection of fossils, medieval weaponry and a wonderful recreation of Grainne Ni Mhaoil's bedroom. Our guide Merriam was knowledgeable, courteous and very enthusiastic. At 10 euro per head, it is a cheap way to pass a few hours and learn a little about how Belleek was rescued from the indignity of having its roof removed.

I would love to have a major party here!!

“Swords and shields”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

Visited the underground museum after having dinner at Belleek with some colleagues.

Very interesting place, Marshall Doran must have spent years gathering up his collection from all corners of the globe. From ammonite fossils and prehistoric shark teeth, to the last wolf shot in Connacht and Grace O'Malley's boudoir, pride of place must however go to the armory section. Young squires (and squiresses) in particular will enjoy having a go at trying to hold (never mind swing) a broadsword, and there are suits of armor, shields and spears aplenty.

Well worth a visit if you're in the area, our hostess was also most engaging and helpful.

“Fantastic History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

Walk into this castle and you feel like your going back years in time. Great collection of fossils the like off you don't see every day. Very informative guide. Mariam really took her time and answered all out questions. Our tour took 1 hr 30 mins which was geat value for 10 euro's each.
The castle is a bit difficult to find, so leave plenty of time.
