“A Definite Must See!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2014

Wonderful museum. Spent time walking around the abbey and then visited the museum. The guides make it an interesting and eye opening visit. Well done exhibits and while we were there they were adding more. Definitely a place to visit and learn about one Ireland's hero's. Really enjoyed the stories where he championed the importance of the women's role in the struggles..

“A brilliant little museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2014

We would heartily recommend a visit to the Michael Davitt Museum - it was one of the highlights of our holiday on the west coast. The Davitt story is very interesting and there are a number of well preserved documents and artefacts. But what made the visit so memorable was the welcome and friendliness of Joe and his colleague. Offering us tea or coffee straight away, they must have given us at least an hour of their time, with a wide ranging discussion and lots of extra information. Thank you very much.

“Rainy day in Mayo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2014

Just spent a wonderful relaxing weekend in Westport and due to the poor weather we decided to explore the history of the area, we could not have chanced upon a better exhibition than the Michael Davitt museum in Straide. Very friendly and informative guides, good video presentation which gives a wonderful insight into the life and times of Davitt and his family. It made those long ago history lessons come to life. Definately one to put on your must see list, and it is ideally located near Foxford which is also well worth a visit for the story of the mill and also the Admiral Brown exhibition located at the mill, while most of us have heard of Michael Davitt and the Land League, Admiral Brown was credited with forming the Argentinean Navy and is revered in South America but relatively unkown in Ireland, what a pity. Plenty of history in a very small area, I think even though we were there as a couple it would apeal to older children and teen also

“NUI Galway alumni event”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2014

Spent this morning on a guided tour of the museum and nearby abbey. It was a wonderful experience. Got a great insight into the man and his many roles in addition to the Land League. Women in particular should applaud his role in the promotion of equality and public roles for women. He was enlightened for his time on a range of social issues. The guides are superb with encyclopaedic knowledge of the man, the history of the time and his influence on world wide events. There are outstanding stone carvings in the Abbey. Well worth a detour. Combined with the nearby Foxford woollen mills you could have a great day in Mayo.
