This is a long overdue review.
Milestone House is a comfortable, modern property, and as others have said, Michael's breakfasts are delicious. But what makes Milestone House special is Barbara and Michael's hospitality. As a solo traveler, the warmth of the hosts and of my fellow guests was always particularly welcome. This was the friendliest, most Irish place I stayed during three weeks in Ireland. Some examples:
They began with a detailed orientation to Dingle town and the peninsula over tea, complete with Michael's hand-drawn map. I had brought Rick Steves's detailed guide to the Dingle ring and thought myself well prepared. But Barbara pointed out some lesser known, truly special stops along the way, including a rustic tearoom where I spent a memorable hour sipping tea, admiring an extraordinary view of gardens sloping down to the coast, and chatting with two Brits in motorcycle leathers.
My first evening in Dingle, after I bumped into Barbara and Michael at An Droichead Beag (a fabulous pub for traditional music in Dingle), they invited me to Dick Mack's pub for a pint, reasoning that I might hesitate to go there alone. They patiently answered my questions about local politics - such as the replacement of English road signs with Irish ones.
One morning, I arrived home from a stop at the laundry to find an impromptu bodhran recital taking place in the living room (you might call it bodhran karaoke - two bodhran players accompanying a recorded flute). The International Bodhran Festival was taking place that weekend, and one of the guests was on his way there. He and a friend were performing for Barbara before their departure.
Barbara, noting my interest in Irish music, loaned me a broad selection of Celtic CDs to play during my drive around the Ring. The music added to the almost mystical beauty of the coastline.
They were happy to arrange dinner reservations for guests, and in some cases even provided transportation to and from town. They also helped three of us to arrange tickets for a traditional music concert at the Anglican church in town (very worthwhile if you're there while one is going on, by the way).
As some have noted, it's a short distance outside of town. But after reading the comments about noise at some downtown B&Bs (and especially since I was in Dingle over a bank holiday weekend), I considered the location a plus. It's walkable if necessary, and in any case, since Barbara shared the location of a good, free car park, making the short drive to town was never a problem.
Thank you, Barbara and Michael! Some day I'll be back.
