We have just returned from a weekend to Dingle. It was a 3 hour car drive, for my wife and two children age 3 and 7. I had rang the Hotel to let them know that we would be late arriving, about 10pm. When we arrived at the Smerwick, the desk area was scruffy with papers thrown on the floor and binders etc. on the ground. We got our key for our room and eventually found it through unlit hallways (lights not working). When we opened the door of our room there was a small hallway the light did not work so we stumbled to find a light that worked. ( a further two lights did not work) We looked around the room the carpet was stained, there was also loose dirt on the floor. The decor was cheap and tatty and the condition grotty but what hit us most was the cold, there was no heat on and the beds needed airing but we had no option but to put our children into these beds. We eventually got the heat working ( by manually turning on the valve) but it took ages to heat the room.
The "Full Irish " breakfast next day was cold, this served in a tasteless "barn "of a room.
The evening meal again was served in this room. (It was part of the weekend package)There are about 40 tables only 4 were in use including our own. The atmosphere was similar to attending a funeral in an almost empty Church.
The food was basically awful. The "King Prawns" were the defrosted rubber type and were deepfried and smelt of oil .The plaice was lumps of watery white paste. t
My wife at one point looked at me and said that she wanted to scream or cry. We had been looking forward to this trip for some time and simply we could not have picked a more wretched "Hotel."
The Bar was empty all the time we were there, and the toilets off the foyer were dirty and smelly.
There was nothing else to do but to go to bed early. That night the heat was turned off and the next morning there was no hot water in the tatty bathroom.
The staff were ok but not trained and the Hotel looked as if there was no one in charge and that no one cared.
Our stay at the Smerwick was truly depressing and words can hardly describe how bad it was.
Dingle is a wonderful place and the weather that weekend was
great and the children enjoyed all the attractions. So all was not lost ,so please DO go to Dingle but sleep in a tent your car or in a ditch but do NOT stay at the Smerwick Harbour Hotel
