My teenage daughter and I spent 2 nights at Ard na Sidhe in June. It was a wonderful experience.
We used the Ard na Sidhe as our base for 2 days of driving around the Ring of Kerry.
The Ard na Sidhe is a hybrid lodging; part country house and part boutique inn. You get the sense of history and the feeling of staying in an aristocratic residence but with all of the modern amenities and luxuries. The details - fabrics and furnishings - and materials are all really beautiful. The place is immaculate and the gardens and setting are stunning (and very photogenic).
We loved exploring the grounds with narrow, winding stone paths and an enclosed garden with moss covered walls.
Here are the details of our stay:
HOW WE GOT THERE
We flew to Kerry and rented a car. It took us about 30 minutes to make the drive (first time on left side of road). We relied on the directions of the rental car agency and Google maps. If you can get to Caragh Lake, there are well-posted signs for the hotel. The approaching road is narrow and has thick foliage.
We booked a room in the main house with partial views of the lake (one step down from the highest room rate). We were in room number 1.
The room had dark polished hardwood floors and a Persian rug. The curtains (lined and interlined) were made with the William Morris "Compton" print pattern and walls were covered in a William Morris "Thistle" print. I was thrilled with both!
The queen bed was a 4 poster. The mattress, linens, and pillows were all supremely comfortable. We slept really well in this room not only because it was absolutely quiet but also because the heavy curtains kept out all the light.
The room had dual aspect windows. Our bedroom window looked out over the front drive, trees, and a bit of the lake. The bathroom window looked directly at the lake.
The blue and white ceramic tiled floor is heated! There is a free standing tub but even better is the light green subway tiled rainfall shower. Between the great water pressure and the lovely view from the window...it was heaven. The Ard na Sidhe should get a best bathroom award!
Dinner is not served on Monday night so we missed eating an evening meal (we were directed to the Carrig Country House). However, breakfast is included in the room rate. It is served in a lovely - and rather fancy - breakfast room. There is a full menu of hot selections. We enjoyed the yogurt with muesli and bread assortment.
Email correspondence prior to arrival was a bit spotty. However, upon entering the front door, we were greeted with great friendliness. Everyone who works at this hotel made us feel welcome.
Coffee/tea making pot in room. Iron. Safe. Hairdryer. Free wifi. Fresh flowers. Turn down service with chocolate.
One word: immaculate. Everything in this hotel is spotless.
This hotel is beautifully restored with attention to details. The peaceful grounds and surrounding landscape are striking. You may not get the personal connection (or well worn furnishings) that you would staying at some of the country houses like Ballyvolane, Bantry House, and others listed in Hidden Ireland or Irelands Blue Book, but you will get a freshly decorated and aesthetically pleasing room with top notch amenities.
