“Hard to find, even harder to forget!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2008

We stayed here for two nights last week and loved it! The room was beautiful and gave us an amazing view of the lake, which looks like a mirror, each night and morning.

The dinner downstairs was excellent except for the peat smoke rolling into the dining area, but all in all a great meal. The breakfast was also excellent.

Clare is a great hostess and the morning/afternoon hostess, Shoban (sp) gave us a great time-saving tip about the Shannon River ferry...THANKS LOADS!!!

In stark contrast to most bed and breakfasts in Ireland, the Carrig Country House was stilted, stiff and downright unfriendly. For example, the proprietors left us hanging for dinner on our arrival. Specifically, we spoke to them continually on our date of arrival, a Saturday, in an effort to obtain directions and once in Killorglin, locate the inn. When we finally arrived at 6:30 p.m., we asked about dinner and were told that they were fully booked for dinner with customers not staying at the inn. We were then forced to turn around and drive back to town, and attempt to find a restaurant that would take us at the last minute on a Saturday night -- no small doing. Most annoyingly, in none of our telephone conversations that Saturday did they mention that we should stop for dinner before coming to their inn, given that they were fully booked. In addition, the proprietors made our family feel "unwelcome" in many small ways, despite that our children are incredibly well behaved and caused no inconvenience to them or other guests.

My husband and I stayed one night in a lake view room (#15) that was spacious, well-decorated, and extremely comfortable. There was a settee in front of a large picture window that looked out over the lake and surrounding mountains. The bed was large - but it was made of two twins put together to create the king - which was comfortable but not ideal and somewhat disappointing. The hardwood floors, tub, and shower in the bathroom with Gilcrest and Sloam toiletries, was also very nice. The common areas were also very well appointed and comfortable. The manager was extremely friendly and helpful. We had a lovely, cooked to order breakfast in the dining room, but sadly cannot comment on dinner. We were sadened to hear upon our arrival that the restaurant was closed (Tue) given the previous long bank weekend; we would have appreciated knowing this prior to arriving, as the hotel is some distance from Kilorgen. Fortunately, our planned dinner by the lake was saved due to our discovery of Ard na Sidhe, about 2km from Carrig House. We had a delicious and relaxing meal in their dining room, which also overlooks the lake.

  • Liked — The location and gardens
  • Disliked — Lack of restaurant service the night we stayed

This was the most relaxing few days we have had for a long time, the staff and the owners were the most attentive i have ever met. The food was brilliant , dinner and breakfast was superb. They even got a packed lunch for me when i was fishing on the lake, which is about 15 meters from hotel. Overall our experience of Carrig House was GREAT!! We will be back again....

My husband and I love this place!!! The hotel is very charming with lots of fireplaces, antiques, and books and photos. It is right along the lake, with lots of little footpaths you can take. We went through, what we call our tunnel of love. It's a beautiful walkway they made through the brush. One side leads to a small open garden, the other down to a small boat launch and pier.

The staff were also really wonderful. The owner, Frank was very friendly and hospitable. Whatever we needed, he would provide. He even served breakfast and cleared the tables. I felt like he really cared and that we were guests in his home, not just paying customers.

The food there is also fantastic!!! They had a promotion where one dinner was included with two nights stay. The fish was cooked perfectly! Crispy skin, moist and juicy! The only thing was since the meal was included, we noticed most of the other guests did NOT leave a tip!!! We thought that was pretty inconsiderate as the service was really great!

We definitely want to go back and wish we had been able to spend our whole trip there!!!

  • Liked — Room, view, service, food
  • Disliked — There was no wi-fi. But they let us use their computer for free.

Three years in a row we stayed at this property and each time it got better. The Views, the room, the food, the owners so welcoming. From pre-dinner drinks sitting in front of open fires waiting to choose what to have for dinner, to returning to your room at the end of the day - it was heaven on earth.

My boyfriend and I are just back from a romantic weekend at the Carrig Country House.

It is a beautiful lakeside hotel with a marvellous garden full of different threes and flowers that were in blossom that time. As soon as we got there, Frank and Mary welcomed us with a nice tea served outside while we were enjoying the landscape and the sun. We stayed in a Lake view room, quite big with nice furniture and an amazing view, off course!

We were looking forward the dining and the restaurant did not disappoint us! Fresh and tasteful food, no words to describe the fantastic chocolate mousse! Good wine list, for honest and affordable
price. Pleasant piano music. The service superb! I would recommend this place to anybody wants to visit Killarney and explore either the
Ring of Kerry or Dingle peninsula, but is also looking for a charming
setting where you can indulge yourself.
