“Expensive but excellent place to stay in Lanzarote”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2011

In the middle of vineyards in the lava with a Volcano in the backyard - great location for those who seek the calm and authentic of Lanzarote.

The bungalow (that was very spacy for a family of four) as well as the pool area imitate the Manrique style. Looks great.

Since the finca is located in the centre of the island, all sites of the island can be reached by car within short time.

The price for a week is high compared to other house rentals in the Canarian islands, but you get what you paid for.

This place is so good I don't know where to begin! We stayed there for 2 weeks, and were very sad when our time was up.
Location: The property is in the middle of a volcanic vineyard, far away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger towns and very close to everything: 10 minutes from the airport, 5 minutes from grocery stores and some eateries, and right in the middle of the island so we could visit the whole island without ever having to drive for more than 30-40 minutes. It was exactly what we were looking for: a quiet, beautiful place to really relax and enjoy time together.
Apartment: The four apartments are set around the fabulous pool, and each has its own private terrace. Our terrace was L shaped and quite big, the kids had a ball playing out there, and we dined and grilled there most of the time. It is surrounded by a cacti and succulent garden. The apartment was spacious and clean, with very nice features, like an indoor garden in the bathroom, volcanic stone bare walls, large windows and a skylight. The closets in the bedrooms were spacious, and the bedrooms themselves were perfect in size and very nicely decorated. When I travel I'm always a bit scared of bad mattresses and the one in out master bedroom is one of the best I've ever slept on. The shower was big and water was hot and plenty. The bathroom itself was bigger than my first apartment. Towels were supplied in abundance and we never felt a shortage of them. We also had soft and cozy bath robes. The kitchen had nearly everything we needed to cook at home, which we did often. Spices and tools, mixer, toaster, kettle, microwave, coffee press, etc.
The available DVD library was a bit smaller than we had expected but we managed to watch 4 or 5 films that we hadn't watched before and the kids got their share of mind numbing children's videos, too, which was most welcome when we wanted to have 10 minutes of respite to read our twitter feeds by the poolside thanks to the free high-speed wi-fi. The yoga house was lovely and there was exercise equipment, but ehm... it was a holiday, no need to torture yourself, is there?
The pool was lovely and kept clean for the most part. of course Lanzarote is windy so it is no easy task. The poolside is great to sunbathe, read or snooze.
Extras: We arrived late in the evening and Tarnya— who is by the way a lovely host, had prepared their Canarian platter for us, which we devoured, and the wine was just amazing. The first bottle is complimentary but it's so good you'll be asking for more, and they have a very nice selection. We also had a lovely brekkie on our first morning, with seriously fabulous pastries and other nice things, but the pastries took the cake.
The guide to the island that Richard and Tarnya provide is a real gem, and also the practicalities of the accommodation are very well explained, like how to deal with the rubbish and things like that. The finca and its owners are very environmentally conscious, and it is a wonderful aspect of the island in general, wind-powered electricity, desalinized sea water, recycling facilities. I read some reviews saying the apartments are poorly lit. Well, yes, most of the lightbulbs are energy saving. I thought it was a plus.
If I have to think of negative aspects of Finca Malvasia, the only thing that comes to mind is the fridge: it was a tad too noisy. Perfection would be if the pool was heated, because on overcast days you can only swim if you're icelandic, but of course, heating the pool would be silly because it gets quite chilly at night and there would go the heating. In any case, we just got back and are already day dreaming of going back.

Room Tip: La Geria was our apartment and it had the best terrace.

What a place! The accommodation was ideal, the weather was fantastic, the pool was cold - but most welcome; the Canarian platter was excellent; the breakfasts were wonderful, the Tagine was very tastey, the location was peaceful and relaxing.

Richard and Tarnya were excellent hosts, Jo was an extremely helpful housekeeper. Joss was a great - even if he does support Barcelona!! Even the dogs were good company round the pool area.

My wife and I and two young boys stayed at Finca Malvasia in March 2011, and had an absolutely fantastic holiday. We have been to Lanzarote a number of times before and love the islands contrast of pure blue sea and beaches, towering volcanoes, and great art and sculpture (away from the mass tourist areas), but had not found a hip place to stay. Now we have discovered Finca Malvasia. It is a group of 4 apartments which surround a beautiful pool, with 5 volcanoes surrounding the property and virtually no other properties in sight. The spacious apartments feel very ‘James Bond’ like (I was half expecting a shark to be swimming in the pool). I think the picture of the pool with the apartments in the background on the main page of the website looks amazing, and I was wondering if it would really look that good in real life – well in a nutshell it does – it is an extremely beautiful spot!
The hosts Rich & Tarnya (plus Joss 6), who live in a separate Finca next door, are a very cool couple who make your stay feel like you are staying as friends at their house. They had some great recommendations for restaurants that you simply would not find on the tourist trail, although the best meal we had all week was Rich & T’s own tangine which they do once a week and which was absolutely delicious.
We will definitely be back soon…..

Finca Malvasia is the best place to stay on the island if you wanna have a quiet time and enjoy the real Lanzarote. Tarnya and Richard have created a beautiful place to stay.
I have been there 3 times and enjoyed ervery minute of it!
The new walk they have organized trough the vineyards (that starts at the Finca) with a guide is spectactulair en shows you the best part of the island: la Geria!
I'll be back!

We stayed over the Easter week while Richard and Tarnya were away but Jo their housekeeper was on site and was extremely charming, helpful and flexible (particularly regarding our late checkout).
The apartments were spacious and well designed with nice touches - fresh flowers, bathrobes, CD/DVD collection etc which were all much appreciated.
The pool and BBQ area were lovely.
Although the finca feels remote - in the middle of vineyards it is not too far to numerous restaurants (plenty of good advice from the welcome guide)

The downsides were
1. The pool although beautiful was freezing and after the first day I couldn't get the kids into it. I appreciate that this probably reflected the patchy weather but people do come to Lanzarote for winter sun when the temperatures are not so high and even covering the pool at night may have kept some heat in.
2. The apartments are self catering but the cooking facilities and equipment are limited. 2 electric rings - which will not allow 2 medium sized pans on at the same time and a microwave. Many fairly basic items were missing - wooden spoons, chopping board, garlic crusher etc etc. The BBQ works well but again using this is weather dependent - we ended up running backwards and forwards in the wind and rain checking if the food was cooked.
3. The fitness room consists of a slightly wobbly crosstrainer and some weights. The return of a treadmill would be a welcome addition.
4. With 4 people per apartment the showers need to be very quick or spaced out as the hot water runs out after 2 - but does heat up again reasonably quickly if you are not in a rush. Again I suspect if the weather had been warmer coolish showers would not have been a problem.

Overall we enjoyed ourselves and the finca has a lot charm I think if the weather had been better the niggly issues above would appear less of a problem and we would have probably given it a higher score . ( I do appreciate Richard and Tarnya have no control over the weather!)

NB The central location means it is a great base for cycling all over Lanzarote

Thank you for your review of Finca Malvasia and the positive feedback you kindly gave. We are pleased to hear that overall you enjoyed your stay and were well looked after throughout.
Thanks also for the kind words about the size of the apartments, the detailed touches, location and the overall charm of the Finca.

We understand that the weather was very mixed during the Easter week and this was a great shame as clearly this impacted on the overall experience and subsequently impacted on the rating of Finca Malvasia.

We value guest feedback, and we care very much about our customer experience. We genuinely want all our guests to have a very enjoyable stay.

We have responded to the review purely to clarify a few of the points made with regards to the ammenities and the facilities provided at Finca Malvasia for the benefit of all guests.

1. The pool.

We were concerned about the pool comments and on our return we met with the pool engineer. Unfortunately, it appears that the timer on the fuse box which switches the solar heating on in the morning and off again at night had broken. This meant that the Solar heating had not been activating as it should. Therefore, the combination of a short spell of very mixed weather and no solar heating meant the pool heat dropped significantly. Both us and our guests used the pool regularly a week or so prior and although a solar heated pool is never going to be especially warm in winter/spring, they are swimmable. This has now been fixed and with the improvements in weather, this should rectify itself quite quickly. As we are located in the national park of La Geria, solar is our only and our preferred option for pool heating in a rural location. As we we head into the summer months the pool is typically around the low to mid 20's but is of course still weather dependent.

We are very sorry that this problem arose during your stay and for this we do sincerely apologise. Unfortunately, it wasn't an immediately obvious problem as the pump was still switching on as normal but the routing to the actual solar matting was not.

2. Kitchens and Cooking Facilities.

We clearly state on our website what is available in the kitchens and in the apartments (unfortunately we can't add the link in this review) . This can be viewed on our website. We supply a 'Double electric hob, microwave with grill, fridge, kettle & toaster'.

The weather is predominantly good in Lanzarote but being in the middle of the Atlantic and still in the northern hemisphere it can be variable as with everywhere. We are always sorry when the weather doesn't live up to expectations as we genuinely wish for every guest to be able to enjoy the island and the Finca at their best. Many guests enjoy the use of the large 'Manrique style' BBQ), as well as the mobile Webber Kettle BBQ's. Guests are welcome to roll these onto their terrace, for use under the pergola, an ideal alternative for days when the weather is mixed.

On the other kitchen points we have since run an inventory to double-check that all items are there. There are chopping boards in the apartments, oiled wooden chopping boards either in the cupboards or on the work surface of each apartment. There are no wooden spoons or garlic crushers however, we do supply modern black plastic cooking set which limits damage to the non-stick frying pans. The cupboards are equipped with stainless steel pots, pans, frying pans, terracota serving dishes, knife set, cutlery, white crockery and ample glassware of various sizes and styles. We also ensure that guests are in the main supplied with olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, and any other useful condiments that remain and can be re-used.

However, Jo our housekeeper was here living on-site, liasing with guests on a daily basis and across breakfast deliveries, while we were away. Jo is here to assist guests with any needs or requests that they may have - within reason of course! Kitchen utensils are no problem and we would have been very happy to oblige.

3. The 'mini gym'

We refer to our 'mini gym' as it contains a cross-trainer, dumb-bells ranging from 2 to 21kg's, an abdominal Weider crunch trainer, Gold Gym rolling Ab trainer, Lonsdale boxer skipping rope, Yoga mats, a boxing punch bag and a Sony sound system with iPod Doc. We chose the cross trainer for Cardio excercise and this model as it is light and needs to be easily moved by us and our guests who want space to do group yoga sessions or treatments. It can be a little wobbly if it is positioned across two boards of the hard wood flooring but this is remedied by simple moving it around a little. We have currently chosen not to replace the treadmill after the last one was broken and a child borrowed the "Safety key" which was potentially dangerous. The last one was hardly ever used, but we will continue to listen to guest requirements and have made a note. We have also since found that many guests prefer to go running in the surrounding countryside and use the room for more relaxing pursuits like Yoga, Meditation and Massage / Beauty treatments.

4. Hot Water - Showers

Lanzarote has no mains Gas on the island including the resorts. The Island manages its hot water using either electric immersion heaters or solar power. Currently, each apartment at Finca Malvasia has 75 litres of hot water in their own electric immersion tank when full and fully heated. This is enough to fill a large bath when cold water is added and these are the biggest domestic heaters available on the island. This should be ample for showering. With 4 people in an apartment there may be a need to wait a short time for a new batch of water to reheat but this only takes a short period to happen.

To conclude, we have only responded to the points made to provide more detail and clarity for those reading this review on Trip Advisor.

Thank your for taking the time to review, we truly value your custom and your feedback and thank you for visiting Finca Malvasia.

With our best intentions, Richard & Tarnya, Owners of Finca Malvasia.

My boyfriend and I wanted a short haul week away in the subshine to recover from the miserable, long London winter and stumbled upon finca malvasia on the guardian website. It looked good online abd got a good write up BUT - lanzarote?!! Always been lanzagrotty in my book. We took a risk and my god were we pleasantly surprised on all counts. Firstly, lanzarote is a very rural and beautiful island - there are some excellent volcanic landscapes to take in but it's not all 'black sand'. There are plenty of lush landscapes, green farm lands, WHITE sandy beaches and endless vinyards! Gorgeous. Finca malvasia is situated in a stunning vinyard and the apartments are very 'boutiqe' in design with plenty of space and very good value for money. The excellent bar b q area mean we cooked our own meals some evenings to save some cash. The pool area is glorious. Lovely size and surrounding by well kept cacti gardens. Warm enough for dips to cool off from 27 degree days in march! Tarnya and richard were exceptional hosts who went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed and were always on call to offer advise on local restuarants (of which there is an abundance!) and we couldn't have had a more relaxing week. There's lots to see and do on the island too if you get restless by the pool/on the beach... They're all
listed in tarnyas excellent welcome guide so you can't fail to find something fun to do. Please visit if you want some chill out time in the sun in a very cool/'boutique' style surroundings. Only 3.5 hr flight and 10 mins drive from airport makes this such a winner for a quick getaway. Can't recommend finca highly enough. You won't see a high rise building or a chav in sight!
