“Good holiday but over priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

First tip is dont try and take alcohol in to the Maldives it WILL be confiscated at the airport. The next thing is the heat and humidity hit you in the face when you get off the plane, travel in something lightweight as you normally have about an hours wait before boarding speed boats or sea planes.
We started our holiday in beach bungalow 406, great location, really roomy, lots of storage space, modern air conditioning. large telly. We were upgraded half way through our holiday to a water bungalow (703), very nice but not as much storage space and the bathroom was in a poor state of repair apart from the jacuzzi bath which was brand new, which made the rest of the bathroom look even worse!!! Definately not worth an extra £1000 for 2 weeks.
Take up the laundry service offer as trying to wash and dry clothes is nearly impossible because of the humidity. Your dirty clothes are taken in the morning and brought back at tea time washed and pressed , great.
The all inclusive is very restricted, all drinks from the beach bar are extra, the drinks in the mini bar in the room are extra and very expensive. The beer is ok, the spirits are local brands and the cocktails are really naff. Watch out for midnight as you have to pay for ALL drinks after then.
The food is excellent and most of it is cooked or prepared before your eyes, if you stay for 2 weeks you will not get bored as the choice is varied and they have different themed nights.
The staff are great. very friendly and helpful.
As you are captive on the island the excursions, diving, boat hire and themed parties were all very expensive, the Spa was quite reasonable if you asked for deals and a discount.
Take your own snorkelling gear as this is $6 a day to hire and you will snorkel everyday as the sea life is brilliant.
Good holiday, worth a visit but better value can be had else where with the same wow factor namely Mexico. We marked this 13/20

Room Tip: The beach bungalows are the best value for money and have the best location. The only critisism is t...

We were originally allocated to Room 219, which we were really happy with until we turned up. They had placed a sand pump pipe right outside with loads of unsightly sand bags. We requested another room and were moved to room 503 which is a Family Beach Bungalow, this was really nice, except the evening entertainment was really near and kept us awake until midnight.

The island itself is beautiful, staff are great and food is excellent. Our initial 3 days were great but then the invasion started...

As a few other reviewers have mentioned a lot of Chinese tourists come here as well as Europeans. I don't have any problems with other nationalities, but they're sense of what's acceptable is just very different to Europeans. They were on the whole very loud, shouting up and down the beach to each other, repeatedly spitting on the beach and we even had one guy behind us cutting his toe nails! This was particularly hard to swallow as this was the only thing stopping the beach from being like paradise.

I hear that the Maldives is very popular with the Chinese, so i don't think this is isolated to just Chaaya, but it did impact our holiday.

The staff are great and the food was of a good standard, lots of choice and variation.

The snorkelling was fantastic, the best place i found was in the small harbour and just outside the seawall. I saw so many different types of fish including grouper, reef sharks, stingrays and a turtle. Definitely take your own mask and i would highly recommend taking reef shoes to protect against some of the very sharp coral.

We also went on an evening fishing trip which was a lot of fun and well worth it. Me and my partner both caught Barracudas, which we had for dinner the next night.

I would hesitate in recommending this island if you're looking to go to the Maldives and suggest you look for an island that doesn't cater so much towards Chinese tourists, as i said this was the only negative point, but still quite a large one for us.

We knew we had made the right choice of resort as soon as we arrived on the island, paradise found. Fast check in at reception with an introduction to the services and facilities available at the resort from Zita the truly excellent First Choice Holiday Adviser. The ground floor superior room we had booked exceeded our expectations, quiet with fantastic views from the beach just a few meters away. The bathroom / shower / wet room was huge, very comfortable large bed and plenty of hanging storage space, the air con was really good as well. .
Restaurants and bars were all excellent, first class service, excellent choice and variety of menus all freshly cooked that was never repeated during our two week stay. Special mention
and thanks to our waiter Zarir, Salad Chef Joseph and Tandoori Chef Banj who made the most amazing meals and nanns right in front of us, not forgetting Chefs Mamic and Didar on the hot plate cooking fresh fish and just about anything else you wanted.
Make sure you go to the Welcome Meeting presented by Zita, very informative, lots of useful info and no selling of trips and excursions, pay attention to the advice on sun block, you will need at least factor thirty, even if you are topping up an existing tan, you burn very quickly even if it is cloudy or overcast. Make sure you bring enough sun block with you as it is very expensive in the island shop ( $45.00 a bottle )
Chaaya Island is a real chill out zone, plenty to do if you want to or just relax and take it all in. Spent hours watching the surfers on Pasta Point, good waves nearly all day every day. Take you own snorkeling gear with you to save the cost of hiring every day, snorkeling around the island is just amazing so many fish to see in the clear water, must have spent four hours a day in the water and swam a good few miles as well. .
Met some great people while we were on the island, Sue & Steve from Leeds. Clare & Dan, Cathy & Mathew not forgetting Jess and Jason from Wales who were the islands top pro snorkel guides when Jason was not the personal trainer in the Gym.
Only slight disappointment was that you can not do any fishing anywhere from the island, in the harbor, from the pier or sea walls (local laws / rules) I did go on one of the evening fishing trips though and managed to catch a 12lbs Jack Fish which went down very well in the restaurant.
Certainly enjoyed our stay and can not wait to make a return visit just as soon as we can.

Room Tip: Ground Floor Superior room in the 300s ticks all the boxes. ,

On the other hand, we were sorry if you got a little upset that you were not able to fish anywhere because we are protecting our house reef.

This was our first visit to The Maldives, so we don't have other resorts to compare, but Dhonveli Island certainly ticked all the boxes for all the family!
We had two overwater suites, I think 104 and 103, which we felt were the best located suites, as they afford a fantastic view across the lagoon and out to sea. We could easily swim from the suites, except at low tide, when it was a little too shallow. We saw rays and reef sharks and too many other fish to mention swimming under the suites and boardwalk.
The restaurants all serve really good food and have different themes each night, along with some standards, so the family never got bored of eating in the same restaurant each night. Of particular mention was the pasta bar and also Labeeb our waiter was really friendly! Service throughout the resort was really good.
We went on a snorkelling trip to a nearby reef, which was great, but just as good was snorkelling around the edge of the harbour. The colours of the coral and fish was amazing!
We'd highly recommend this island to anyone.

Our flight was alright as flights go, although had not reserved our medical seats. When we arrived at airport it was hot and hectic (alterations/overhaul to everywhere in one go). Had to wait half an hour or more for our transfer by speed boat which was quite an experience as it was a bit choppy. When we arrived in the island had to wait 10 - 15 minutes for everyone to check in (although we did get a cold drink and flannel). We stayed in a beach bungalow (403) which was positioned a short way from reception, bar and our allocated restaurant. Room was spacious and airy as long as air con was on, but all the furniture was dark which made the room dark as there was nota central light only wall lights, outside bath was always full of leaves (but then there was a tree over it. Food at all meals was plentiful and edible,we celebrated our 24th anniversary while we were there and they put flowers on our bed, decorated our table and baked a cake (more than what we would have had at home). We want to the welcome meeting and met Zeta (the first choice rep) and it was explained that only certain drinks were all inclusive and that whatever you had wether chargeable or not had to be signed for as well as things bought from the shop, tailor or any excursions, and that you could settle your bill daily or weekly (as long as by last day), as long as you kept an eye on what you were signing for you knew what you would have to pay. Weather was hot whilst we were there but towards the end of our second week it started to cool down and there was a thunderstorm and it rained on three separate occasions. There was also a pore cut but it only lasted about two minutes, although there was a longer power cut when some work was being done (about one hour).

Everyone was friendly and polite (although a few people did not say hello). Zeta was extremely helpful and booked our medical seats on our return flight.

The beach bungalow we were in needed a bit of TLC as did the bar and restaurant although I think they were updating the bungalows slowly as some were white and others were dark wood, also they started to paint the bar area, and asked to come into our room the day before we left to start painting (didn't let them in)"

We only had to take ten steps to the beach from our bungalow and our loungers were saved for us everyday by the Landon beach duty (he was promoted to lifeguard whilst we were there as he had to save so many Chinese people). There were quite a few Chinese people on the island., but they were friendly enough. The holiday all in all was relaxing and we had a lovely time.. My husband really enjoyed snorkelling, he saw a stingray on more than one occasion.

Room Tip: Beach bungalows are fair better situated for the beach

Overall a very nice stay in the Maldives for the first time. Stayed in a Water Suite. V nice accommodation and nice exclusive access to the quieter restaurant. V friendly staff who were always able to accomadate requests such as paragliding and private dolphin safari. It was a shame that during our stay the watersports license was lapse. Would recommend.

Recently returned from 2 weeks in the Maldives staying at Chaaya Island. First time to the Maldives and "wow" it was fantastic. The sea was so beautiful, so clear and so many shades of blue. A holiday to relax and unwind after a crazy busy year. Located 30 mins by smooth speedboat from Male airport and you're deposited in this tropical paradise, where the staff can't do enough for you, the resort is lovely and the sunsets, stunning. If you like diving or just snorkelling off the beach then come here, as there is so much to see. We had a superior room for 9 days, which was very clean, well appointed and had a lovely sea view from our balcony. Then upgraded to one of the water suites, which was sooo fab and very romantic. The all inclusive worked well and there was a good choice of tasty, well cooked and prepared food, no matter your nationality. The surfers bar was great for watching the sunsets in a very chilled atmosphere. All in all a great trip and we'd go back to the Maldives, no problem! No real issues but, one of the other nationality groups was a bit noisy and some of their habits rather alien to us in the West but, I guess we're all different and that's what makes travelling to other parts of the world, interesting!
