“Maldives once again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

Travelled in May 2013. It was our 15th visit to the Maldives, and this was by far the best island we have even been to and this has raised the bar so high we are unlikely to find its equal. Have never been to a 5* island, previously in the Maldives just 3 & 4*. I won't repeat what everyone is saying but totally agree with all reviews on food, ambience, house reef and fantastic staff. It was our silver wedding anniversary and we were treated to breakfast in our room with sparkling wine and cake. Staff - all fantastic, can't remember all the names but Shiru who looked after us at breakfast getting me gluten free bread, Nitin who entertained us in the Lighthouse bar before dinner, Azeez and his colleagues who looked after us having our meals in the Lighthouse, Azzam our room boy and the two lovely ladies (can't remember their names) serving the drinks in the Lighthouse. Management obviously have their finger on the pulse and everything runs very efficiently – they actually encourage criticism. Personally anyone who can criticise Baros should just stay at home. We cannot help think though, from a business point of view, if they reduced the prices in the bars they would have more customers. We had 5 days of rain but that didn't spoil our trip. Highly recommended.

Rarely in life do you find perfection, Baros resort has achieved absolute Perfection.

I usually write fairly short reviews, this will not be one of them. If you read this I apoligize in advance for my lengthy descriptions but feel that if you are ever looking for the perfect resort in the Maldives, Carribean, French Polynesia, etc. you really need to consider Baros.

Arrival: Coming from the USA - it was a rather long trip. Arrived around noon with no baggage. Not a problem. Smiling faces picked us up at the airport, wisked us off to Baros and were greeted with champagne by our host Aminath Ashra (What a sweetheart! Hope I got the spelling of your name correct!)). She informed us that she would follow up on the baggage and in the meantime we could go get sunscreen, clothes, etc at the gift shop and she would send whatever toiletries we needed to our room. We were taken to our room (we had chosen a pool villa).

The Room: Perfect in every way. Air conditioning was awesome. Bathroom with indoor/outdoor showers, large tub, etc beautiful. Ceiling fans above the king size bed and outdoor patio were great. Lighting and size of the room terrific. Linens were unbelievable. King size bed was the best I have ever slept on in a hotel anywhere in the world. We paid a lot for our tempur pedic at home and this was actually better! The pool was awesome! We were glad we had it due to the heat. Nothing better than going in for a dip at 7:00AM before breakfast or at 10PM after drinks outside up in the Lighthouse. If you get hot - I do - I would suggest getting the pool whether out in the over water or villas. All the restaurants are outside so you can get warm.

Everything was thought of in the rooms... expresso machine, late night snacks on the bed left after turn down, great mini bar, large screen LCD television concealed in front of the bed, Bose sound system, an IPOD was provided with a wide assortment of music, the list goes on and on. We sent out laundry day one and it was back in hours (no charge because of the lost luggage), the room was made up during our breakfast every morning and when at dinner every evening, We ordered room service a few times and once again, they hit the mark every time! Our walk to the beach was 50 feet and two lounge chairs with our villa number engraved on each chair greeted us. Thes chairs were comfortable but the bean bags placed on the loungers by the pool were over the top. The concept was genious! The furniture was all extremely high end, no expense spared. The room exceeded our expectations!

The Staff: Unbelievable! I had read the smiles were faked on another review, totally untrue. From the guys at breakfast cutting the fruit to our specifications or making us eggs or waffles the attitudes were over the top friendly! Nittin in the Lighthouse lounge...I do not know what to say here...service like yours was so good, so over the top, so perfect that I am at a loss for words. Thank you my friend. The concern by the entire staff over the loss of our luggage was unbelievable. They moved Heaven and Earth and got it to us in one day. Shuhan, no idea how you are doing it, but you have the BEST STAFF we have ever come across at any resort or hotel on the planet! Hats off to you!

The Dive Shop: Once again, perfect! Regis, Kiko, the entire staff, thank you so much for so many great dives. Banana reef, Manta Ray Reef, Alibaba reef, all beautiful and so different. I saw Sharks, Manta Rays, Turtles, moray eels by the dozens, octopus, the list goes on and on. One day I was the only diver with Regis and had a staff of three to help us on the boat. I feel guilty, they do all the work! The house reef is awsome and just steps from the villa. You can read any of the other reviews about the house reef and get an idea of how beautiful this reef is!

The Spa: perfect in every way. Do not miss it! The treatment rooms are stunning! The massages perfect. This should get best island spa on the planet in Conde Nast!

The Food: Breakfast each morning at the Lime was awesome! The staff cuts fruit and make waffles, fried eggs, pancakes, etc. all to your liking. We drank a couple glasses of complementary champagne every morning. Lunch at the Lime or Cayenne were perfect. The Asian food was always tops! We had dinner at the Lighthouse twice, the a la carte meals were out of this world and the degustation menu was over the top. If you can, do the dinner on the sand bank. This was indeed our best meal at Baros. You are taken out to a spit of sand 15 minutes out off the island and are left out there to enjoy the sunset with a bottle of champagne and a lobster dinner cooked to order with tiki torches and a personal chef and waiter! The weather was perfect, the food was excellent and the four hours out there a memory for the rest of our lives. I had read the weather could be bad in June/July/August, it was perfect every day but one!

The Lighthouse Bar: One of my favorite Bars on the planet! Watching the sharks and rays swim by (in the fading sunset) while laying on a cushion (the size of a queen bed) overlooking the water two stories up and being served perfect drinks by Nittin is to die for. Seriously. He brings by Canapes, snacks, drinks, etc without rest and always makes sure you are comfortable, your drink has ice and you are satisfied in every way possible. The jazz band is to be heard as well. Thanks Nittin for a memorable experience!

The gym: we tried to make use of this but were way too lazy! It has great equipment, towels, cold water bottles, ear buds, televisions on the cardio equipment, etc. etc. Our limited workouts were great!

Leaving: The staff all lined up on the dock and waved goodbye until we could no longer see them...it was indeed like leaving Paradise.

So in short make sure to dive or snorkel, do the sand bank dinner, have a few dinners at the lighthouse (make reservations, it fills up), have drinks at the lighthouse every night, go to the spa at least once, don't spend too much time at the gym, get a pool, enjoy the beach, and overall enjoy the great staff, they are truly the best! Above all, if you are seeking perfection...you will find it here.

The location of Baros is what makes this a '5 star' - it is simply stunning. The best thing by far is the house reef, which is huge and minutes away from any villa. We saw reef sharks, turtles, rays and so much more. This really made the whole stay here worthwhile.

I have tried to do a balanced review below, but please bear in mind that this is in the context of a magical honeymoon. I absolutely unreservedly recommend Baros despite our few qualms.

We were collected from the airport by the Baros boat, but did have to wait 15 minutes for them to arrive- this seems a common theme from reading other reviews. We were met on arrival by the front office manager Shijah who was very accommodating, and allocated a villa representative who handled checkin and bookings. We were impressed and grateful that they took us to our room despite our early arrival.

We stayed in a water villa and absolutely loved the privacy and the feeling that you were alone in the ocean. The bath, toilet and shower all look out to the ocean and it is a very special feeling. If you can afford it, I would definitely recommend it. The rooms are well decorated and spacious, with nice little touches such as the provision of yoga mats, slippers and robes.

We had pre-requested villa 310 based on previous reviews and were pleased we did-it is very private with great views. The manager did warn us that there would be work happening on villas near us but that we wouldn't be disturbed. Unfortunately after a couple of days a large digger appeared near our villa, and despite being assured it would be removed when we complained, it reappeared almost everyday which was a shame. To their credit the next day we called we received a complimentary lunch, but we gave up calling after that.

We went half board and were glad we did as the food prices, like the drinks prices, were extortionate. You probably end up paying the same but it was better to swallow the lump sum up-front rather than spoiling the holiday worrying about prices. I do buy the argument that some goods cost a lot to import, but when fresh local tuna costs around $45 you do raise your eyebrows. The bars were always quiet and restaurants dead at lunch because people simply can't afford 3 meals a day plus drinks. I suspect if they halved the drinks prices the bars would get busier and they would sell at least double the amount. As an example, a large bottle of water costs $9, the same as a fruit juice which will also mainly be locally sourced. Everything has 8% government tax and 10% service charge, even things like massages which are surely a service in themselves. We noticed most guests brought the free water bottles from their rooms to dinner to help reduce the costs!

Half board gets you breakfast and dinner in the Lime restaurant each day or 45% off the others. We ate in the Cayenne and Lighthouse once and both were far better. The Lime is a bit of a 'jack of all trades', offering a huge selection but we kept trying new dishes mainly because we didn't have anything that great. The food on the whole was good though, but poor value at half the price. We stayed during their quiet season and the majority of guests were Korean. We did find it slightly off putting that they spent most of their meals taking photographs and would advise management to ban cameras in the restaurants for the benefit of other guests. Most guests attended restaurants in vests, shorts and flip flops which we just felt prevented meals feeling like a special event. Especially in the Lighthouse there should really be a proper dress code.

The Lighthouse Lounge is excellent and the cocktail prices are actually probably fair (around $14) given you get some lovely canopes too. I recommend the Lighthouse Dhun that comes with cherrywood smoke and Nitin is a wonderful waiter. We also had a stunning meal at the Lighthouse, watching sharks swim below as we ate food fit for any michelin starred kitchen. The lobster bisque is cooked in front of you and really delicious, and I would definitely recommend the tuna rossini. Our waiter was Ali and he was exceptional and added that extra touch of class to the evening.

The spa was great and we had a couple of nice massages. We really did love the service of everyone we came across at Baros. It was the best we've had at any hotel, and we have stayed at many of the world's best hotels. Everyone was incredibly friendly and professional and the staff did all that they could to keep people happy. We found Nitin in the Lighthouse bar, Ali in the lighthouse restaurant and Faththey and Eyshadh at Lime really stood out and deserve a special mention. The cleaning staff were also brilliant. Every time we went to breakfast we came back to find a clean room, and likewise at dinner for the turn down. At the end of the stay the villa attendant gave us a leaving gift-a lovely touch.

Overall, this place is not faultless but we did have a lovely stay. It's worth coming for the house reef alone, and when you spend most of your days snorkelling or sunbathing then you can happily tolerate the little niggles. I can't imagine you will find a better hotel in the Maldives but be careful if you haven't got deep pockets!

Room Tip: Get a water villa. 310 is the best combination of private but with sunset views. 320 to 330 are on t...

It was a unique and unforgettable experience of 4 days in Baros Maldives Resort, full of a peaceful energy, wonderful people and superb service, attention and immaculate facilities. We were welcomed by a Maldivian lady; our host Ashra and later greeted by the Hotel Manager. No words can describe the perfect atmosphere we enjoy, pristine beaches and perfect weather. All restaurants were extremely well taken care of, with superb and delicious menus, foods and drinks. In summary; a true heaven. I fully recommend this hotel to all of you who are looking for a peaceful, enjoyable and world class retreat

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

My wife and I have just returned last week from our 8th (!!!) stay at Baros in the last 3 years (we usually stay for 3 weeks!). Hence, we can claim to know this island well. In the past we've also been to Kaninfinolhu, Royal Isalnd, Taj Exotica and Reethi Rah but since our first trip to Baros, we can't bring ourselves to go elsewhere.

We have travelled extensively around the world (including Euope, the Caribbean, the Far East, India, Zanziabar, Maritius, Dubai) and without doubt, we consider the Maldives to have the most beautiful beaches and amazing sealife. You truly get that Robinson Crusoe, No shoes, No news atmosphere which is great for relaxation.

Baros remains our number 1 destination within the Maldives and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to couples of all ages who are looking for relaxation, a romantic setting and peace and quiet.

For that very reason, I would not advise families or groups looking for a lively or loud resort to go there. Children would enjoy a larger island with more daytime activities, a kids club etc. The peaceful, romantic vibe of the island would appeal to anyone on their honeymoon, an anniverary or simply some time together as a couple on an idyllic island.

For those who have never been to the Maldives, each resort island has only one hotel based on it. This means you are never bothered by people on the beach trying to sell you souvenirs and you can enjoy your privacy. There are no motorised water sports around Baros so the beaches are quiet and you are safe to snorkell in the open sea.

Despite being only 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport, you do not hear any aircraft as it is not on the flight paths for domestic or international planes. It is unusual even to hear a sea plane.

There are many reasons why we love Baros so much:-

The STAFF

from the Resort manager, Shuhan, to all of his management team and also the reception, waiters, cleaners etc everyone seems to enjoy working there and go out of their way to cater to all your requests and needs. The management staff are very visible and make a point of asking you how your meal was/ how your stay is/ is there anything else you would like etc. They greet you at the jetty when you arrive and wave you off as you leave - just as a good host would when having guests in their own home.

If you are unwell reception will organise a nurse to advise you in the first instance, if you have dietary restrictons the chefs adjust the menus to meet your needs, if you prefer your drinks to be prepeared in a certain way the bar staff will ensure they are prepared to your liking every time you order.

You can even ask for items not on the menus and (allowing for ingredient availability - they are in the middle of the Indian Ocean after all) they will prepare meals just for you. I don't eat beef but wanted a hamburger so they prepared one for me with chicken one day, lamb another day and Gabrielle, the Executive Chef, even offered to prepare a venison burger for me on another day.

Wine and champagne is incredibly expensive across the Maldives due to it having to be imported and Government taxation but Baros does have more affordable wine options and will even save an unfinished bottle for you from your room or any bar or restaurant and send it to wherever you choose whenever you want (eg back to your roome or any bar or any restauarant)

Staff know you by name (even from your first visit) and take the trouble to remember your food and drink preferences.

We appreciate that it may seem that we would receive "special treatment", being such frequent visitors, but staff were just as attentive to us on our first stay, which is why we returned.

The main thing is that the staff are HAPPY in their work and that shows in the fact that several staff have been working for the resort for over 10 years.

This may be because Baros is one of a few hotels run by a Maldivian family - rather than a large multi-national chain of hotels so everything about it is geared towards personal attention and treating you very much as a valued and welcome guest rather than just another anonymous customer.

REEF

If like us, you do not want to have to take a boat to a reef for a pre-planned snorkelling trip, then a house reef teaming with wildlife is essential.

You would be very hard pushed to find a more pristine, beautiful house reef than at Baros. Even an inexperienced snorkeller can swim hardly any distance from their sun lounger and be amongst sharks, rays, turtles, a moray eel and a multitude of brightly coloured tropical fish.

There is no need to be alarmed by the thought of swimming with the sharks as many are very small reef sharks and the larger ones seem so used to snorkellers that they just swim past you, keeping their distance.

If you are nervous, simply ask a member of the dive team to accompany you on a snorkel safari. They are very approachable (unlike at some other centres where they are only interested in people booking diving trips) and patient with novice snorkellers.

Baros cares for the environment and appreciates the reef is one of the big draws for returning guests so they have invested in having an excellent marine biologist, Verena, to oversee the management of the marine environment. She gives excellent talks for guests about the geology and marine life in the Maldives and guests can take part in her ongoing program of growing coral in some of the sheltered, shallow areas around the water villa jetties and near the Light house restaurant.

We used to only go to resorts with a pool but although Baros doesn't have a pool (yet) this should not put you off. The sea is warm all year round and usually very tranquil near the beach with plenty of shallow areas for those not confident about swimming in deeper water or in the open ocean.

The walls between the reef and the beach prevent larger waves from reaching the water nearer the beach so swimming is safe. It's like being in a huge azure coloured swimming pool anyway, wth the adviantage of no chlorine.

ROOMS

There is no such thing as a "basic" room in Baros. All rooms are villas with either a beach front or over water position and reserved sunloungers.

The outdoor bathrooms are spacious and showering in the open air under palm trees is an amazing experience. For those that are not so keen on the thought of an outdoor shower, there is also a separate shower in the covered part of the bathroom.

I don't think you would be disappointed whichever room type you had.

They have also thought of EVERYTHING in the room - 3 pin power sockets for UK plugs, hairdyer, rain ponchos, flip flops, slippers, robes, yoga mats, life jackets (for snorkelling), coffee machine, free bottled water, fruit basket filled daily, umbrellas, in villa champagne for returning guests

RESTAURANTS

Staying for 3 weeks, you'd think we might get bored with the food. However, as the chefs at all the restaurants produced either menu dishes adjusted to our preferences or, with advanced warning, items not on the menu, we were never bored.

Limes menu produces an excellent buffet breakfast under the supervision of Appu (been at Baros 25 years) and Hassan Diddi (been at Baros 30 years). Help yourself to a high quality Prosecco and make sure you try the waffles whicha re excellent.

Half board guests can also eat there for dinner and it has a varied menu from across the world.

Cayenne Grill produces excellent grilled meat, fish and chicken dishes and has a complimentary salad bar with a huge choice of salads, sashimi, soup, anti-pasti, breads

The Lighthouse restaurant has a 360 degree deck over the Indian Ocean and a fine dining atnosphere. It is hard to believe they can produce such a wide variety of haute cuisine items on the menu when everything has to be imported.

If you can, try to time your trip during the full moon - sitting on the deck enjoying fine wines and world class food, with the ocean lit up by moonlight is simply unforgettable.

BARS

The Lighthouse bar above the restaurant again has 360 degree views and the feel of being on the deck of a yacht. The cocktails are amazing and Nitin, the waiter is attentive.

Free canapes are provided after 5pm - perfect with a couple of sundowners. On Fridays they have a live jazz band making the atmosphere even more mellow.

Ask the bar staff, Lakshman and Arevna, to adjust the cocktails to your taste or ask for one not on the menu and they'll prepare it for you.

The sails bar is set in a garden of palm trees with powder soft sand beneath your feet. It is more casual than the Lighthouse and has live music on Tuesdays with a Maldivian bamd called De-Tuned. We don't normally go for hotel based live music but this band paly everything from Adele to Tub-Thumping to U2 to Bon Marley to Rock 'n Roll - and they do it well.

Guests even get up on to the beach and dance along later in the evening as the atmosphere is so good.

Veejay (been at Baros 15 years) ensures you are always well taken care of at the Sails bar.

Bit of a long review I know, but we have so many good things to say!

In summary:-

Nowhere in the Maldives is cheap (due to the unique problems they face in providing food, drink etc in the middle of the ocean) but Baros is not the most expensive of the Luxury resorts - it is better than your average 5 star property so the prices will reflect that.

As a couple, if you want to experience the Maldives in style, then JUST BOOK IT.

If you can afford to go in the drier months then do so to guarantee good weather (i.e Feb or Jan, March). We have still had very good weather (3 weeks of almost uninterrupted sun) in March and April.

Don't worry about booking their "entry level" room - it is still a villa with a beach front location. Very spacious decorated in a contemporary Island Chic style

Congratulations to Shuhan and his team for making every one of our stays at Baros perfect and we look forward to returning to our little piece of paradise soon.

Upon flying into the Maldives as the plane was descending you begin to see the incredible beauty of islands which was below us. The Euphoria and High had finally arrived after a build up of 4 months in waiting.
Upon arriving we were whisked away like Royalty by Baros Staff on one of their launches. After about 20 minutes or so of taking in Male and surrounding Islands there in front of us appeared Baros..
After such anticipation myself and my wife were transfixed with the beauty that was ahead of us.
After docking we were greeted by Shuan the Resort Manager and his staff.
As soon as we stepped onto the Pier the experience began to be personalized. It felt like you were being welcomed to your own private island. The beauty and tranquility of Baros was all ours for the 8 nights we were staying there. This was the feeling created by the staff.
We were in a Deluxe Beach Villa and were upgraded to a Baros Beach Villa. A stunning room with great comfort, faciities and accessories to go with.
You open you back door and within 10 metres lies the serene waters of the Indian Ocean which contribute to making Baros the special place it is. You have your own beach chairs and umbrella within two metres from the shoreline.
Before reading my review, you would have read so many more awesome reviews about the food, restaurants and overall hospitality which are extremely accurate of what awaits you by going to this island which is Heaven. There is no way you will or can be disappointed with the Food & Beverage. So i will not go into this area further. If you are or you do have issues in this area... then god help you.
What makes Baros even more special than any where i have been to around the globe is the attention to detail in all areas along with making everyday of your stay an absolute pleasure. The facilities, activities and tours they offer are outstanding.
If you want to go that little bit further and create a surreal atmosphere and occassion for yourself and your spouse/partner they can even do this to an amazing a degree.
Picture being on a Maldivian Cultural Boat or on a little patch of sand in the middle of the Indian Ocean having dinner whilst taking in the breathtaking views and sunset, along with being provided service which is generally reserved for Kings and Queens. This what Baros does and can do for any of their guests. This is one of many little things Baros offers which makes Baros so special.
For the 8 days we were there we forgot what the real world was. We were in the world of Baros and one we did not want to leave.... how could you possibly want to leave this Island Heaven.
Baros is second to none in providing you the ultimate relaxing holiday and forgetting your day to day activities back home.
This was truely an amazing experience that Baros provided us and it all comes down to Shuan and his staff. How they go out of their way or assist you or attend to a request or greet you or interact with you would leave a lot of top class destinations in the world left behind. They create a dream that you do not want to come out off. Sadly you do...
i would like to give a special thank you to Nitin in the Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar. This individual provided service second to none and his style, charisma and personality made each night at this bar memorable. A really nice guy.
Oh.. by the way the Lighthouse Bar if you cut it out and put in other Areas or Harbours around the world the waiting list to get in would be months. That's how good it is......
After all this wonderful experience it was time to leave... Our moods became sombre and as we were on our way back to the airport by launch. I looked back and said " Baros now that i have found you i will never forget you. I will be back to continue my journey with you."
Ladies and Gentleman there are no words that can do justice for Baros in what it is and what it provides and offers. You have to experience it first hand to understand the effect it has on you.
You will not want to leave.. that i promise you.
Thank you Baros for giving me an experience that i will treasure forever. The beauty is now i have found you... i will not let you go..

It is a too good hotel to share opinions with anyone other than friend. We are here for the fourth time and are sure to come again. This hotel is rather expensive. But only here on the Maldives you can find la haute cousine. The general attitude is perfect. One example. During our two nights stay here this year we received three messages from general manager written by hand. I understand what that means.
