“Great Find and Great Value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

My husband I were on a two week tour from Cairns to Sydney and spent our last two nights in Australia at the McLaren Hotel in Sydney. I booked our lodgings sort of last minute and I chose the McLaren based on the reviews. It lived up to them and we were not disappointed. The Hotel and guest rooms were very clean, comfortable, quiet, and have nice amenities. The staff was warm and friendly. The value was excellent. A totally charming place to stay - with surprisingly large guest rooms and a very pretty breakfast room. We also enjoyed just walking to the corner to get the bus to go to the harbor and walking three blocks to catch the train for the airport - a bonus convenience.

Stayed here for 3 nights on a business trip. Good location within easy walk of restaurants, pubs and train station. Best feature was it was extremely quiet unlike other hotels closer to the train line. Continental breakfast was adequate and great value. Bed was comfortable. Owen at reception was very helpful even preparing a late supper after my flight was delayed. and I arrived late. Would definitely stay here again.

A quaint little hotel with lots of charm and character. Just a 10 minute walk to North Sydney train station and with free parking. I chose this hotel based on the many positive reviews and was not disappointed :)

Room Tip: We were in room 26 (I think). It had doors that opened to a small veranda area. Good if you smoke. O...

Stayed one night. My only night in Sydney. Very comfortable and relaxing and has a bed and breakfast feel rather than that of a hotel. Rooms are very spacious. The only downside was some of the furnishing a little jaded. But the beds were large and very comfortable. Although we used it only as a meeting point for the others travelled with, there was a lounge room for guests which was comfortable. Sadly I was on an alcohol fast and so the bottle of port for guests was left untouched. The breakfast in the 'conservatory' was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful in recommending places to eat and how to get to places we needed to get to. Would recommend and will go back.

I found the McLaren very comfortable and relaxing for a five night stay. All the staff I met were consistently welcoming and helpful. Owen, who looked after me for the first few nights, was always ready with information about restaurants and ferries, and making sure I had everything I needed. I found the room simple, but also charming and restful, and with a pleasant patio to sit out. I really loved having a window I could actually open (so often not possible in 'modern' hotel rooms). The breakfast room and garden were very pleasant, and it was especially delightful to also have a separate common lounge room if one did become a little tired of the same four walls. Thank you for making me really feel a 'guest' with that 'little extra', more than the usual impersonal feeling of most of the large hotels in which I've previously stayed in Sydney. I will be visiting again in the future.

The McLaren Hotel is in North Sydney, which is a train ride away from the city. This is a good thing, because the area is quiet and relaxed. The king rooms are spacious and we had doors opening on to a small shaded patio area which made a lovely change from the normal high rise hotel chains. Only criticism, the furnishings are a little on the jaded side. After checking in on a Saturday, we walked to the bustling North Sydney markets just around the corner in the Local council grounds, a very pretty landscaped area. A 20 minute walk towards the harbour took us to Lavender Park, an oasis of stunning shady parkland with views across to the city. Well worth the walk.

Room Tip: As ask for a king room with outside area

Stayed with my wife for four nights. We had a standard room near reception which was quite spacious. The hotel is more like a bed and breakfast. There was a big bathroom with a shower that could fit two people. The only downside was a slight musty smell but soon disappeared after having the window open for a while. There was a lounge room for guests which was good and also there was a bottle of port and glasses for guests. The breakfast was excellent and only cost $7.00. The staff were friendly and there was free parking under the building. Would recommend.
