My wife and I had the pleasure of spending 10 days at Twelve Degrees North. My friend had stayed there in the spring (See review by DawnB501) and raved about the place. My wife and I were originally going to go to Jamaica but changed our trip based on Dawn's feedback. We figured if it was half as good as Dawn said, that we would be in for a treat. It was as good as Dawn described and oh, did we get a treat!
The place is simply beautiful, it is landscaped immaculately. There are flowering shrubs, flowering trees, perennials, annuals, walking paths, benches where one can look in all directions and see splendor. The rooms are spacious, relaxing, enjoyable to be in, and peaceful. You can hear the ocean from your room and look out and see boats anchored in the bay. The pool was clean and had the perfect water temperature. There is a long pier with benches and places to sit along the way. We snorkeled off of it, watched sunsets, and read books and relaxed on it. Then there are the hammocks! We spent hours relaxing in the hammocks, reading, napping, talking and unwinding!
The people are exceptionally friendly and competent. The owner (Joe) meets you the first night with his delicious rum punch. He is friendly and super knowledgeable and equally helpful. Joe helped us with money exchange, where to go shopping, who to call for tours, taxis, and where to eat. All of his advice was spot on, and more importantly, made for an exceptionally fun vacation and one that allowed us to really experience Grenada and its people and sites. In addition to Joe, all of the staff at Twelve Degrees North were wonderful. The groundskeepers knew all the plants, with one person having been there for upwards of 20 years. He had planted many of the shrubs and trees himself! Our room keeper and cook (Donna) really cared for and about us. She took interest in our trip and worked to meet our needs. She cooked delicious foods, kept our place immaculately clean, and gave us privacy when we needed it. She too provided a lot of advice on places to see, shop and swim.
The food on the Island is very tasty, nice flavors and new fruits we never had before. We ate at many restaurants with the "Beach House" being our ultimate favorite. If you get to Grenvile you have to eat at a small place called "Good Food" that was also great. The Beach House is high end and pricey (although worth every penny as it is both romantic and delicious) and the "Good Food" place is fine native fare for almost nothing! I also recommend simply telling your room staff to cook their favorite dishes, you wont be sad you did so.
The Grenadian people were very friendly and super helpful and kind. I never worried about my safety, never experienced any problems, and every time we took a wrong turn, or missed a turn, wherever we stopped we always received friendly helpful advice. I really cant say enough about the friendly people.
The island itself is beautiful and diverse. It is worth going on different tours to see the rum distilleries, the different towns and cities and experience the diversity of the different regions on the island. Just ask Joe and he will help you plan your trip once you are there. We snorkeled with Aquanauts and highly recommend them. They do scuba diving too. If and when we go back they will surely get our business.
One of the last tings I will say is that the other guests at Twelve Degrees North also made our trip a true pleasure. It is funny where one finds new friends, yet we found one in a room two doors down. We have been emailing ever since returning home.
Our trip was one of those amazing once in a lifetime great experiences. The travel was easy. The accommodations delightful. The food was delicious. The island scenic, friendly, and interesting. The people were grand!
