4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

We stayed for the weekend and were most impressed with the staff in the hotel.Great views from our comforable and modern room.
Food and wine were of a high standard and priced at a reasonable level.Would go back without hestitation.

Room Tip: Book Superior room with a view.

The Mill Hotel proved a great choice for our 2 night mini-break in Sudbury. A picturesque base from which to explore Suffolk towns and villages with Long Melford and Lavenham very close by and Southwold and Aldeburgh making a good day out from Sudbury, itself a nice town to explore which is the honme of Thomas Gainsborough's house and museum.a short walk from the Mill Hotel.
Hotel staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly. Breakfasts were ok but he evening dinner was excellent. Room was clean, spacious and warm. The working mill wheel is one of a few historic features in this Doomsday Book mentioned location but there was nothing dated about, the facilities in the hotel which were were modern fresh and very pleasant..
All in all an excellent choice of hotel and a great place to take a break.
We would definitely return to The Mill if /when staying in Sudbury again.

Room Tip: If you can secure a room facing the pond - do it for a little extra enjoyment

We stayed on a two night New Year package. Our superior room was good and had a wondeful view of the mill pond. The food and wine were excellent and the staff helpful and friendly. My only minor complaint was that whilst the New Year Day Jazz Brunch consisted of an extended menu of both breakfast and lunch foods that was all there was, there was no music and little atmosphere so I do not know why it was called a Jazz Brunch . However, overall we had a wonderful time and look forward to returning to this hotel to see more of the area at a different time of year.

Room Tip: The superior rooms at the fron of the main building have wonderful views

Great hotel with brilliant rooms. Very clean and ultra comfortable. Good selection of food and drink available in the restaurant and lovely views over river and countryside. One to def visit again when next in the area.

We only live about 30 minutes from this hotel but I had often seen this building on my way to client meetings and by chance a client from Northampton was coming to see me in Essex so we agreed to meet up at The Mill. He and his wife had stayed there before on a Groupon deal, excellent price for dinner bed-and-breakfast, but as there was not a deal on at the moment he telephoned and spoke with Lorraine, on the front desk and she was happy to agree a similar deal for both of us.

All of the food that we had was excellent, politely and efficiently served in the evening and although the breakfast was self-service we ordered poached eggs and an omelette which promptly turned up within a few minutes.

All of the staff are extremely pleasant and helpful to the extent that when we arrived my clients had been there for a couple of hours and were waiting for us in the bar for an early evening drink. We asked if we could leave our hanging clothes and bags at the reception, which they readily took from us, but then as we were walking away politely asked if we would like them to take them to our room which they did.

We had a minor problem with the heating in our bedroom and bathroom and although the rooms were still very warm they quickly provided warm air heaters for us. We like to sleep relatively high up and so when passing reception, on our way to the restaurant, asked if they could put a couple more pillows in our room which, when we went to bed, where there.

The owners are going through the process of redecorating and although we requested one of the newly decorated rooms this was unfortunately not available because they were decorating the walkways to the rooms. That said we were offered two of the very large rooms overlooking the River and therefore once again the service provided was excellent.

Well done Lorraine you have an excellent team working with you and I hope we have the opportunity to see you again soon.

my wife and myself recently - mid January- spent two nights at this very pleasently situated hotel in rural Suffolk.
We had booked through Groupon on one of their special deals at a tad under £150 for both of us and included breakfast and dinner on one night. We decided to upgrade to a room with a river view (very nice watching the ducks from our bedroom) and this upgrade came with a bottle of wine.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The receptionist's local knowledge was very good and was able to point us in the right direction for things to go see and do.
The room was perfect. Spacious with a king size bed, TV etc
The food in the bar and restuarant was good. The menu was not overly complicated but was much more than just pub grub. Well presented and well cooked too.
The Hotel is undergoing some improvements at present - duly informed before we confirmed our stay- but this didnt interfer with our stay except that the drilling and banging started promptly at 8am so no laying in.
In the centre of the bar/resturant is the origonal waterwheel. It seems a shame that the wheel is not better lit. At night all you can see is reflected light from the glass surrounding it. Its a shame too that there are no placs or information showing what was where etc when this was a working mill. Or maybe some drawings of how the wheel made this mill work, what the mill stream and pond were for. Although there is a very good explanation of facts about the mill on the website and in the rooms, i cant help feeling that more could be made of the history of the mill
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would consider staying there again

Room Tip: go for the upgrade if you can afford it

The room was basic (even the "superior" one we paid for) but had recently been redecorated so was fine, overall the hotel is also fine, food good, staff friendly but there were lots of little "problems" which taken alone would not bother you but when there are lots it kind of spoils your stay.

For example, the dark passage way to the room with blown light bulbs (including the key one over two steps), the door at the end of the bedroom passage that had a broken closer so bangs each time it shuts, the toilet which takes ages to fill and will not flush properly, the toast machine at breakfast (with notices on saying do not adjust) which only partly cooks the toast (so one pass leaves bread white and soggy, two passes burn it), you order scones with pickle and no pickle arrives, you can only have filter coffee as the coffee machine is broken, muddy car park with only half the lights working (and by the way used as an ambulance park) I could go on.

My advice to the management - you are doing a good job with the refit of the rooms but take a good look at the details and the little things if you want happy customers.
