“Pleasant Break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

As a couple we stayed for 3 nights on a New Year Special Offer. We had a premium room (Four Poster Bed, River Views, although at extra cost) and were totally satisfied with it. The staff were courteous, efficient and helpful although one young member of the Bar Staff did not know what a 'Whisky Mac' was. But she does now!! New Years Eve was marketed as 'Black Tie' event and thus our perception was that it was going to be something special. On that basis we were disapointed as the night was split between two venues (The Restaurant and the Bar) and there was no distinction in the Bar between those guests that had paid a not inconsiderable amount of money for their 'New Years Eve Gala Night' Tickets and those who hadn't. The result was that canapes were offered to everybody in the bar whether they were on the 'Gala Night' or not!! Hotel Guests that had not paid for the New Years Eve dinner were also able to enjoy the benefit of the disco in the bar throughout the night which overall gave us the feeling that we had not received good value for our money. There was not even any party poppers, crackers or hats to wear to feel in the party mood. Apart from the NWE party not meeting our expectations the stay was very pleasant. Dinners were good but not excellent (limited menu choice),breakfast was buffet style and again limited in choice and again good but not excellent. As part of our package we were entitled to a 'Jazz Brunch' on New Years' Day in the Riverside Restaurant. Once again our perception of what to expect was blighted by reality. We were expecting a jazz trio or quartet maybe, playing music to accompany our dining experiance, but alas no such entertainment. When we enquired at the reception about the 'Jazz Brunch' even the receptionist didnt know what was meant by the terminology. Would we stay here again - yes we would, would we reccomend it to friends - yes we would, would we stay over New Year again - no we wouldn't, unless the arrangements were different and more exclusive.

Room Tip: Ask for the old part of the Hotel with rooms with a River View.

Stayed for 2 night New Year package, our room was in the annexe very recently renovated and very nice everything new and tastefully decorated. A little disappointed with New Year's eve party night, no party poppers or balloons, it could have been just an ordinary night. Other than that, meals adequate but breakfast on New Year's day was disappointing, cold food and had to ask for everything includes basics like jam, sauces etc. Bread was not fresh either. Staff were pleasant enough but not very efficient, even the bill on checkout was incorrect (in their favour!)

Room Tip: Ask for the annexe

We have just come back from a 2 night stay at this gorgeous little hotel. 1st impression, lovely spot! Our room was 506, it had just been newly decorated and was lovely - no view mind you. We ate here on our first night, the food was great and so was the price! the mill is in a glass house in the restaurant - beautiful. Breakfast was nice too, its a buffet - theres plenty on offer. one thing to note, we were told breakfast finished at 10 - not every day it doesnt!! its 9:30 on some days. when we tuned up at 10 looking very disappointed the manger (i think) arranged for us to have cereals, tea and juice in the bar. i think that was a fair compromise. ok, the staff are all quite young and i doubt after a career in hospitality, but what the heck! sudbury is a great base for visits to Aldeburgh, bury st edmonds, newmarket etc...My advice would be to ignore the terrible reviews, if people are expecting 5* service then they ought to stay in a 5* hotel! at these great rates...you get what you'd expect, a clean, well presented (you can see that they are in the middle of a very nice referb) the odd glitch, staff are helpful but aren't falling over their feet to help - in fact for what we paid, i was most impressed! We had a very cheery trip! I would definitely recommend this place!!

We stayed for two nights in December on an Internet deal. The setting is quite idyllic and our room overlooked the river.

The room itself was clean but little better than a room in a travel lodge. When I booked the room I specifically asked for one where we could stay with a dog. On arrival we were kept waiting for some time while the receptionist debated with herself whether we could stay in the room we had booked.

We decided to eat in the bar on the first evening. The order was mixed up and the complaint dealt with in a disgruntled manner. The soup was luke-warm and the bread served with it was damp from defrosting. The club sandwich was better . We decided not to even try the more expensive restaurant on the second evening.

I had expected better and was disappointed.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor but the stairscases are long and look to be steep

Stayed here for my fiance's birthday. The reception and bar area are lovely. They had the fire on which made it feel really festive. The water wheel is lovely and to get to our room we went through a corridor that was over the river, which was beautiful. The room was nice and clean and the staff were friendly. The breakfast was delicious. We really enjoyed our stay. There were a few little faults in that the towel rail wasn't fitted properly and kept falling off when you put towels on it. There were some hairs in the bath. Other than that it was really ace and I'd recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the area as it is in such a beatiful setting.

We took a short break through a very reasonable internet deal that included free afternoon tea. This was taken in the bar area, adjacent to a working waterwheel that was encased behind a large glass window. Unfortunately the young bar staff didn't seem to know about the deal and our order was only processed after a long wait. When it did arrive it was lovely, though there was one draughty area that we moved away from to ensure a comfortable area to take tea.
Our bedroom had recently been refurbished and was warm, well appointed and comfortable.
The restaurant provided good meals though the dining room manager on duty on Tuesday morning wasn't as attentive as the other staff and hadn't noticed that certain breakfast buffet trays and the supply of warm plates had run out. He didn't apologise for any wait as he was too busily engaged in conversation with a workman engaged on the refurbishment to notice, though, in fairness, his young assistant did convey apologies for our wait.
All other staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel occupies a very picturesque aspect adjacent to the water meadows.
This was the first time that we had stayed in Sudbury and it is a charming small town with a wealth of attractive architecture. We recommend a visit to the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough in the town that houses a large collection of his paintings.
