“Good in parts”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

We ate here last week. We read the menu at the gate and decided that it loked good. Inside it was a diffferent menu but we still liked what was described so we stayed.

The starter(devilled kidneys) was tasty and the main course (parmesan gnocchi) was well flavoured but did seem a little over priced. The desserts looked stunning (textures of rhubarb and a coffee parfait) full marks for presentation however some of the elements were however a little lacking in flavour.

The main waiter and chef were both helpful.

“A tale of two halves”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013 via mobile

Called in at lunchtime and enjoyed a very walm welcome and light lunch in front of a roaring fire.
Returned for an evening meal having read the menu at the front of the hotel. Stood in reception and passed by a young waiter 3 times without any acknowledgement. Decided to take our coats off and sat in front of fire as at lunchrime. Menu brought by another waiter and totally differant to the one displayed outside. Certainly not as good but decided to have duck breast (not available) - ok will try the mackeral (also not available). Gave up at this point and left. Shame because we were looking forward to eating in the resteraunt after such a lovely lunch.

“More a pub than restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Somewhat chaotic from arrival. Lounge area was busy, a group arrived just ahead of us and we were ignored for sometime. There wasn't room for us to sit to await the other couple we were to dine with so we went through to the dining area. The lounge seats are all low, so probably a good move. Staff seemed disorganised and no one offered to take coats. We were left quite sometime before we we asked for a drinks order. The dining room is actually two connecting rooms of lovely proportions - art work a bit modern for me - has bare wood floors . The chairs have high backs but seats a bit squiggly making the table seem a bit high.
Food was adequate but can't rave about it. Crispy poached egg with the ham hock terrine was good. Belly pork well cooked but a bit bland in presentation.
Staff were mainly young and not very professional.
In fat the whole dining area could lack character and atmosphere ... Only made good by having excellent company as we did.
