Description: Samphire Bistro is dedicated to drawing out the best food that the Yorkshire Dales and Vale of York have to offer and serving it up as a unique, memorable dining experience.Located on the vibrant North Street of the historic Cathedral City of Ripon, the Samphire atmosphere evolves throughout the day from a relaxed and social setting into a more lively and adventurous evening menu and ambiance. Our Head chef is also the owner with extensive experience and a passion for creating good food. The restaurant is open daily for dinner, with an Early Bird offer Tuesday to Saturday.Because we believe in wining and dining, occasionally we have live music in the evenings compatible with the dining experience. To ensure our music caters to everyone’s individual taste we keep things neutral with a combination of classic eclectic sounds combined with modern favourites that everyone knows and loves.

“Good Food Good Night Out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

Went on a Friday night whist staying near Ripon. We were met by the owner and seated at the small bar area whilst waiting for our table. The owner engaged us in conversation even though the restaurant was very busy. Discussed the menu and wine list and gave advice on choice. We both enjoyed our starters of soup and whitebait. Our mains courses of chicken with chorizo, duck with braised red cabbage were beautifully cooked and presented. The meal was very tasty and the whole experience good.

“Superb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013 via mobile

The Samphire Bistro in Ripon is a hidden gem. It is a small and well furnished bistro just a few seconds walk from the market square.

I had enquired in advance about GF options and was delighted when Rob replied to say they would be able to cater for this diet.

Upon our arrival we were greeted with a warm and friendly attitude and Rob explained the menu and offers they had, I.e early bird.

The menu would cater for all tastes. Food was fresh and delicious and also good value for money.

They even prepared a special bannoffee pie GF for me which was delicious.

We cannot wait to come back in the future.

If you live in Ripon or surrounding area, this bistro is most definitely worth a visit. But do book in advance as it is small and cosy.

Well done Rob and team for a wonderful meal.

“A curate's egg, good in parts.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013 via mobile

Visiting this little bistro on the recommendation of business colleagues, hopes were high. The menu read well, despite the skool boy spelling errors and the very pretentious 'soup of the moment' but sadly hopes were dashed in part when the food arrived. I ordered the swordfish; it was perfectly cooked but the accompanying veg were simply awful... all dente I like, raw I don't! My guest settled on the steak; what can go wrong with a steak supper? Seasoning, or rather the lack thereof and soggy chips, that's what.
The service was clumsy but attentive; attention to small details like serviettes and condiments on the table did not help matters. But, and it is a big but, these problems will not mean that I won't be back to give them another chance, because I will. The reason being that the chef and owner agreed that they hadn't done as well as they can and he insisted that no money should change hands. I would have been happy to pay something but they would have none of it. And this is why I give them an overall marking of 'very good'.
Taking it on the chin in business is rare and is even rarer in the restaurant trade, so hat's off to them for their honesty and integrity. Taking your eye off the ball is human, admitting it is the mark of an adult. I will be back and I sincerely hope they get it right next time.

“A Real Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013 via mobile

I've never given 5 stars before but this gem of a bistro deserves them. We went on Friday night and had a superb meal. Our host was very attentive and eager to please, accommodating minor requests for changes etc. We tried a range of dishes and all were well presented and cooked. I had a steak which was exceptionally tender but still full of flavour. My crab starter was equally good. The portions are good without being excessive and there is a nice balance of experimental cooking with good quality fresh simple ingedients. The wine list is relatively small but a reasonable range. We were impressed when we asked for a cheeseboard which wasn't on the menu but was done with grace and with a good range of cheeses. Prices are good value for money and the staff were charming. We were surprised given the high standards we experienced that the place was not full but think that is more likely be a reflection on the newness of the restaurant and local palettes rather than the Samphire. Our only minor grumble was that the table was a little small for 4 but the owner said they are working on a solution. The place has only been open a few months and really deserves to take off. Absolutely a "must try "bistro.
