We decided to stay in Ripon as it would be an ideal point to break our journey south from Scotland. When we looked on Google we found the Deanery. It looked ideal & they offered a special deal for dinner + B&B for two for one night.
We were warmly welcomed & looked after by Linda Whitehouse. Our waiter was excellent. Our room looked over the garden & was perfectly arranged with a very comfortable bed & en suite. The food was excellent. I had Shetland mussels followed by local Nidderdale beef (Linda buys it directly from the local butcher). My wife had delicious scallops and duck. The drinks we not expensive. In the morning we we treated to a superb English breakfast including sausages made by a local barrister!
It is better than it's description on it's web site! It was a wonderful old building quietly situated right in the heart of this ancient small city, next to the cathedral. In the morning over breakfast we could hear the peel of bells ringing out on Sunday morning. England at it's best! The original architecture dates from before 1800 and decorated with furniture in a contemporary style; strangely it did fit with the old building.
