“A Cold night out, a warm reception in !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

I took my other half to the Old Deanery for a birthday treat, we were offered the Evensong deal - 2 three course evening meals, with coffee and a drink after dinner. Bed and breakfast for 2 and the best room available at booking which was room 2 - 4 poster bed and comfy sofa, lovely en-suite bathroom with victorian style bath with shower over. Complementary bath robes.
The evening meals were fantastic, I had warm salad of black pudding and chorizo, steak cooked perfectly and the cheesboard, chose 3 or 6 cheeses with crackers, apple and celery. Other half had mulled beetroot soup !! Sirloin and mango caramel fool...... There was evensong that night at the Cathedral (just across the road) but we didn't venture from the hotel. We even caught up on the iplayer with the free WiFi. A late (Full) English breakfast and promises of a return.

Room Tip: Go midweek for the evensong offer and get the best room you can, room 2 has a 4 poster and it overlo...

We had our Civil Partnership here in November 2013 and it was better than we had ever dreamed possible.

We chose the venue as it has a civil ceremony licence and we wanted a small boutique hotel where we could have exclusive use of the venue. Another must was a venue that served quality food, and we were not disappointed. Bearing in mind mid November is not exactly peak wedding season, the owner Linda was very reasonable regarding pricing. We also got our room free on the night of the ceremony. Some other venues were charging ridiculous prices for 'exclusivity' and some kept the public bar open despite paying for exclusive use?

You will struggle to find exhaustive wedding menus and brochures on the internet containing all the Old Deanery's options, as they tailor make the day to fit your needs. We had our ceremony in the room over looking the cathedral, which was later transformed into restaurant where we had our wedding breakfast. We then retired to the bar where the log fire and candles made for a perfect setting.

We wanted to give our guests a choice of food; and we were able to offer a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 desserts, to be selected a couple of weeks before the day of course. As well as the meal we had homemade canapes that we chose, as well as homemade breads and homemade petit fours. The head chef Lee was fantastic in both delivering the food on the day and also in the planning. He was happy to have e-mail conversations about ours ideas, adding a touch of his creative flair to the dishes. We also spent the night at the hotel a couple of months before our ceremony in order to try out the dishes. Lee sat down with us for an hour discussing dishes and suggestions, then we sampled some of our chosen dishes for our evening meal and were able to sample the wines available for our menu. On the day, we had a Ploughman's type buffet in the evening. The homemade scotch eggs were amazing! He also made some really interesting vegetarian and gluten free options.

On the day itself Emma ensured everything ran smoothly and was attentive and sincere. I say that because after a long summer of weddings, it would have been easy to be treated like 'just another wedding' but this was far from the case, and nothing was too much trouble. There was also a slight mix up with our chosen wines the day before, but Emma made sure this was quickly resolved.

I have to say all the staff were brilliant, especially Brett, the duty manager, who didn't grumble at us stopping up until the wee small hours drinking and singing Bohemian Rhapsody into our improvised microphones (...and the day had started off so sophisticated!!).

I have to mention this venue is perfect for a string quartet. We hired the Melton Mowbray String Quartet, on recommendation by Linda, to perform before and after our ceremony. They were amazing.

We can't recommend this hotel enough. The only problem with the day was ... we can't do it all over again!

Room Tip: All rooms are individually decorated and quirky.

You two had to put up with a less than smooth handover of your plans when I had to take a step back for a while but the team came through for you. I only wish we had you on tape though! We all hope you are enjoying life and hope very much to see you again. Best wishes and thanks for your appreciation. It means a lot

Visited on Christmas Eve with friends & was everything that was expected! Pâté starter, steak main & cheese board desert & couldn't find fault with a thing!

Pâté served to a lovely standard, only a small basic side salad but very adequate & a generally overall nice dish.

Sirloin steak served to a 5* standard, cooked to exact 'medium' standard as ordered, served with all the usual trimmings plus Stilton cheese - a lovely extra that was not expected & made the dish a little more than just 'standard'!

Cheese board to die for! Served with far more quality locally sourced cheese than elsewhere, really put the meaning into the term "cheese board"!

Very good service, 6 of us in total & no complaints all round, all courses & wines served quickly but nothing rushed or missed. High quality dining but delivered for a very reasonable price. Exactly as an establishment like this should be!

Everybody loves Christmas Eve in our team and it was such a lovely atmosphere. This year for the very first time we are open throughout Christmas and hope that will be equally atmospheric with excellent food. So very glad we helped your Xmas get off to a really good start.

We spend a great deal of time in hotels, both in the UK and abroad, some of which are high profile international names, and in general they are all the same. How refreshing then to find this diamond: a small hotel in a superb location with a warm welcome from genuinely friendly staff. The food was excellent, the room full of character and beautifully appointed. This historic building retains its quirks and is full of character. Full marks and we will be back as soon as possible.

Great authentic hotel with fantastic friendly staff who make you feel very welcome. The room we stayed in was great and the food was delicious. I ordered the full Yorkshire breakfast and could not manage to eat it as there was too much. The booze was also great and i got wrecked at the wedding party. I would not hesitate in highly recommending this place.....

A warm welcome was had on our arrival , however we were allocated a room not to the spec we re-quested. After a chat with the manager an offer was made to try and located another hotel to our liking.Due to fatigue we decided to stay put. Our room was warm clean an cosy with a good view of the cathedral. The evening meal was well presented and tasty , with a complementary glass of champagne in lieu of our earlier dissapointment. The breakfast was cereal etc to which you helped yourselves and the cooked full english was prepared and delivered to the table. It hit the spot.
All in all the old deanery is a good place to stay with ample car parking and grounds to stroll .around

Room Tip: Further to discussions with the manager a new system has been put in place to ensure customer satisf...

We were upset to get this wrong but so glad that you were moved to stay and make the best of us. The rooms are now allocated with all kinds of remarks and DO NOT MOVE being the order of the day so as not to have such disappointments again. You were more than fair in your review thank you.

We came to The old Deanery for New Years Eve again. Just a fantastic evening all round.
From the warm welcome to our eventual departure, the staff were friendly and attentive throughout.
The food was exquisite and we enjoyed every mouthful.
We will be back again.

There are a few occasions in the year where I work and enjoy my hotel restaurant at the same time..New year is one of them and I thoroughly enjoyed this year - maybe because dancing was back on the agenda, the company was excellent and certainly the food and wine helped!!
